초록

함태영은 대한제국의 법관이었던 인물로 기독교에 입교하면서 한국장로교회의 지도자의 한 사람으로 활동하고 있었다. 한국 장로교회의 총회가 구성되고 자리를 잡는 중요한 역할을 했다. 특히 3·1운동 시기에는 한국기독교의 각 교파들과 사회단체였던 YMCA와 연결되어 있을 정도로 한국기독교를 대표할 수 있는 위치에 있었다.
3·1운동은 우드로 윌슨의 민족자결주의에 고무되었던 천도교와 기독교, 불교 지도자들을 비롯한 종교지도자들에 의해서 준비되고 기획되었던 독립운동이었다. 천도교의 경우는 교주인의 손병희의 지도아래 일사분란하게 움직일 수 있었다. 그러나 한국기독교는 크게는 두 개의 교파로 나누어져 있었고, 지역과 신앙유형에 따라 각기 다른 입장을 가지고 있었다. 이 운동과 관련하여 뜻을 하나로 모으는 것이 쉽지 않았던 것이다. 더군다나 당시 한국교회의 주류는 교회가 정치운동에 참여하는 것에 대한 부정적인 인식을 가지고 있었다.
이 운동의 진행과정에서 한국기독교를 대표했던 사람이 이승훈이었다. 그러나 실제적으로는 함태영이 이 운동의 준비와 기획, 그리고 한국기독교의 여러 세력을 하나로 모으는데 결정적인 역할을 담당했다.
한국교회가 3·1운동에 참여하는데는 두 가지의 문제가 해결되어야 했다. 우선은 천도교와 연합 운동이 가능한지에 대한 것이었다. 천도교가 가지고 있었던 동학의 이미지는 폭력적이고 정치적인 것이었다. 그리고 이 운동이 독립선언보다는 독립청원의 성격을 가져야만 합류할 수 있다고 생각했다. 그들에게 만세운동은 철저하게 그들의 신앙 속에서 나오는 신앙의 고백운동이어야했다. 함태영은 이 운동의 비폭력 무저항정신을 끝까지 고수하며 천도교의 입장을 분명하게 확인하는 역할을 했으며 독립선언으로 되어야만 독립청원의 성격을 가진다는 것으로 기독교 지도자들을 설득했다. 기독교계가 이 운동에 참여를 결정한 것은 거사일 일주일여를 남겨놓은 시점이었다.
함태영은 이승훈과 함께 기독교를 대표하는 인사로 사실상 실무를 도맡아처리했으며 천도교의 최린과 함께 실질적으로 이 운동을 진두지휘했다. 그가이 운동에 적극적으로 나섰던 가장 큰 이유는 그가 가지고 있었던 한국 장로교회의 복음주의 신학적 이상 때문이었다. 하나님의 구원이 개인뿐만 아니라 국가차원에서도 이루어져야 한다는 것이었으며 그것이 곧 독립이었다. 독립은정의로운 방법을 통해서 이루어져야 했다. 정의는 자신을 희생함으로 불의한자를 변화시키는 것이었다. 또한 역사의 주관자가 하나님이시라는 신부적 국가관의 이상은 정의를 실천할 명분을 제공해 주었다.

Ham Tae-young was a judge of the Empire of Korea and became christian. He played an important role in forming and positioning in the Korea Presbyterian Church General Assembly.
In particular, during the March 1st movement, he was in a position to represent Korean Christianity, so that it was linked to the Korean Christian denominations and the YMCA, a social organization.
The March 1st movement was an independence movement prepared and planned by religious leaders, including Chondogyo, Christian and Buddhist leaders who were inspired by Woodrow Wilson's national self-determination. In the case of Chondogyo, it was able to move under the guidance of Son Byeong-hee of the leader. However, Korean Christianity was largely divided into two denominations and had different positions according to the region and belief type. It was not easy to gather the meaning in relation to this movement. Furthermore, the mainstream of the Korean church at the time had a negative perception of the church's participation in the political movement.
Lee Seung - hoon was the representative of Korean Christianity during the course of the movement. Actually, however, Ham Tae-young played a crucial role in the preparation and planning of this movement and the gathering of various forces of Korean Christianity.
The Korean church had to solve two problems in participating in the March 1 movement. First of all, it was about whether or not a union movement with Chondogyo was possible. The image of Donghak that the Chondogyo had had was violent and political. And I thought that this movement could join only if it had the character of independent petition rather than the declaration of independence. For them, the Hanseatic movement had to be a profession of faith that came out of their faith thoroughly. Ham Tae-young, who stood till the end of the nonviolent non-resistance spirit of this movement, played a role in clearly confirming the position of Chondogyo and persuaded the Christian leaders to have the character of an independent petition only with the declaration of independence. It was at this point that Christians decided to participate in the movement, leaving only one week to go.
Ham Tae-young, along with Lee Seung-hoon, acted as a representative of Christianity and practically leaded it. The main reason for his active involvement in this movement was the evangelical theological ideals of the Presbyterian Church in Korea. The salvation of God must be done not only at the individual level but also at the national level. Independence had to be done through justice. Justice was to change the unrighteous by sacrificing oneself. The ideals of the divinity's national view that history is God is the cause of justice.
