〈유씨삼대록〉의 질책 화행과 일상 대화 교육 (Rebuke Speech in Yussisamdaerok and Its Implication in Speech Education)

초록

가문소설은 유교적 언어문화를 배경으로 한 일상생활 속 대화의 범례를 살피기에 적합한 자료이다. 특히 〈유씨삼대록〉은 조선후기 상층 사족 가문의 이상적인 언어문화를 생생히 구현해 낸 작품으로서 화법 교육적 활용 가치가 높다. 〈유씨삼대록〉에는 온화하면서도 엄정한 질책의 발화행위가 다양하게 제시되어 있는데, 이는 현대인들이 일상 화법에서 자주 직면하면서도 부담스럽게 여겨 회피하곤 하는 질책 대화의 효과적인 전개 방식을 익히게 하는 데 유용하다.
본고에서는 보그랑데의 텍스트 언어학 이론을 활용하여 〈유씨삼대록〉의 질책 화행을 다음 세 가지 관점에서 분석하였다. 보그랑데는 텍스트의 선형성 제약 원리로서 구성 요소의 ‘열거’와 이들 간의 ‘휴지’ 및‘통합’, ‘핵심-주변’ 요소의 분류와 요소들 간의‘무게 조정’, 그리고 앞의 요소에 대한 ‘회고’와 뒤의 요소에 대한 ‘전망’의 원리를 제시한 바 있다. 본고에서는 이상의 원리들을 크게 세 부분으로 나누어 〈유씨삼대록〉의 질책 화행을 고찰하는 데 활용하였다.
첫째, 질책 담화의 내적 구성 요소들과 그것들이 융합되는 방식을 ‘열거’와 ‘통합’의 측면에서 살펴보았다. 그 결과, 유교의 보편적 예법 규범에 입각하여 상대를 질책하는 내용 단위와, 상대와의 특수한 개인적 관계를 근거로 사적인 차원에서 건네는 질책의 내용 단위가 균형 있게 열거되면서 화자와 청자 간의 심리적 거리가 적절히 조절됨을 알 수 있었다. 아울러 두 가지 내용 단위는 과거-현재-미래로 이어지는 시간의 흐름에 따라 자연스럽게 융합되면서 통일성 있는 담화로 조직됨을 발견하였다.
둘째, 질책 화행이 다른 화행과 결합되는 경우 담화의 구심점이 어떻게 설정되는지를 ‘핵심-주변’ 원리와 ‘무게 조정’의 측면에서 살펴보았다. 질책 화행은 특히 위로 화행과 결합되는 경우가 빈번하였는데, 이는 두 화행이 모두 보편적 규범과 화자-청자의 특수한 관계를 아우르며 내용 단위를 마련하는 공통점이 있기 때문임을 알 수 있었다. 아울러 두 화행이 결합할 때에는 담화의 분량과 순서를 조정하여 청자에 대한 화자의 심리적 지지를 강조한다는 점과, 이를 통해 질책보다 위로의 기능이 전면화 되도록 화행의 성격을 조절한다는 점을 발견하였다.
셋째, 질책을 긍정적으로 받아들이고 새로운 화제로 연결 짓는 거시적인 대화 전개의 양상을 ‘회고’와 ‘전망’의 측면에서 살펴보았다. 청자는 자신에게 주어진 질책 담화에 대해, 담화의 구성 요소들을 충실히 회고하며 각 요소에 대해 의견을 제시하거나 자신의 입장을 해명하는 ‘회고’의 방식으로 대화에 진지하게 몰입한다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 또한 질책 담화를 처음 시작하는 화자는 담화 중간에 청자로 하여금 숨은 염려나 불안을 드러내도록 유도하는 말을 배치함으로써 화제가 확대되도록 하고 보다 생산적인 소통의 계기가 마련되도록 노력한다는 점도 알 수 있었다.
현재의 화법 교육에서는 공적인 화법에 비하여 일상적인 대화 화법이 다소 소홀하게 다루어지는 경향이 있는데, 이상 〈유씨삼대록〉 질책 화행에 대한 분석은 일상 대화의 화법 교육 내용을 구체화하는 데 도움이 될 것으로 판단된다. 또한 전통사회의 유교적 화법 문화를 고찰하고, 이를 바탕으로 현재의 실용주의적 화법 문화를 사회·역사적 관점에서 성찰하게 하는 데에도 〈유씨삼대록〉의 질책 화행에 대한 분석 내용은 유용하게 쓰일 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.

영어초록

Family novels from the Joseon dynasty period contain abundant examples of dialogues in everyday life based on Confucian culture. Yussisamdaerok, in particular, is a valuable educational material, as it concretely describes the idealistic language culture of noble families during the late Joseon dynasty period. Yussisamdaerok contains numerous examples of strict and gentle rebuke speech, which is useful for students to learn the appropriate rebuke speech.
In this article, Beaugrande’s text linguistics theory was applied to analyze the examples of rebuke speech in Yussisamdaerok. Beaugrande had presented several principles that constrain the linearity of texts. These include “listing,” “pacing,” “merging,” “core-adjunct,” “loading,” “looking-back,” and “looking-ahead.” These principles were divided into three categories in order to analyze the three aspects of rebuke speech in Yussisamdaerok.
First, the “listing principle” and “merging principle” were utilized to analyze the components of rebuke and the manner in which they are integrated. The results confirmed that the components that concern the universal rules of Confucian manners, and those regarding the special relationship between the speaker and listener, were listed as balanced. A balanced composition of the two groups of components contributed to the adjustment of psychological distance between the speaker and listener. Further, all components were merged in chronological order, yielding natural unity in the text.
Second, the “core-adjunct principle” and “loading principle” were used to analyze how the core and load are adjusted when rebuke speech is integrated with other speech acts. The rebuke speech in Yussisamdaerok was frequently integrated with comfort speech, because both types of speeches have the same components, which cover the universal rules of manners and the special relationship between people. When the two speeches are integrated, the speaker prioritizes the special relationship between the participants of the communication in terms of quantity and sequence of discourse so that the comforting function can be emphasized.
Third, the “looking-back principle” and “looking-ahead principle” were utilized to analyze how the entire dialogue was developed for the listener to favorably receive the rebuke. The listener tried to look back at the rebuke speech in detail, and delicately followed the composition of the given speech in rebutting the opponent or explaining his/her perspective. Faithfully looking back on the previous speech showed that the speaker was immersed in the dialogue with respect toward the opponent. Moreover, the first speaker tended to considerately include some clues for the listener to express hidden anxiety or fear, which resulted in the expansion of the topic and more productive communication.
Compared to official speech such as debating and presentation, the speech of everyday dialogue tends to be neglected in present-day speech education. The analysis of rebuke speech in Yussisamdaerok may supplement everyday dialogue speech. In addition, the analysis of Yussisamdaerok can also be utilized to lead students to contemplate the practical language culture of the present age in relation to the traditional Confucian society presented in the text.
