초록

본 연구의 목적은 자율기술과 자동화가 야기할 ‘기술적 실업’(Technological Unemployment)에 대해 기업의 역할과 책임을 검토하는 것이다. 특히 정부의 ‘기본소득’과 같은 경제적 복지 정책으로는 충족되지 않는 ‘일(work)을 통한 삶의 의미’를 확보하는 데 있어 기업에 그 책임과 존재의 목적이 있고, 이를 위한 방안으로서 ‘확장된 기업경영모델’을 제시해보고자 한다. 그렇다고 하여 본 논의는 경제조직에서의 일의 기회가 삶의 의미와 동치관계임을 전제하지는 않는다. 곧 기업에 고용을 강제하는 것을 옹호하지 않으며, 일이 아닌 봉사, 자선, 여가 등으로 삶의 의미를 찾을 수도 있음을 부인하지는 않는다. 허나 한 개인이 삶의 여러 가지 의미들 중 하나인 경제생활의 영역에서 협력적 생산수단의 일부가 될 기회를 얻는 것은 개인적 선을 넘어 사회적 선에 기여할 수 있는 실질적인 통로이다. 이에 기업은 주요 사회경제적 기관으로서 그 책임과 역할을 수행할 의무가 있고, 이는 의미 있는 삶을 선택할 수 있는 시민의 자연적 권리에 부합함을 강조하고자 한다.
이를 위해 일과 삶의 의미와의 관계 분석이 선행된 뒤, 기술적 실업에 대한 기업의 합당한 대안으로 ‘이해관계자 기업경영모델’ 확대의 필요성을 논한다. 이 모델의 특징은 기술적 실업 상태의 사람들에게 간접적 경영활동의 참여기회를 보장하는 것이다. 이 과정에서 이들은 소비자로서 시장의 수요를 기업에 충족시키고, 기업이라는 공동체 구성원으로서 기업의 경영방향과 의사결정이 사회적 선과의 일치 여부를 검토함을 통하여 성과 효율성도 극대화할 수 있음을 보일 것이다.

영어초록

This study examines the roles and responsibilities of corporations regarding the ‘technological unemployment’ problem that autonomous technology and automation will cause. I argue that a corporation’s responsibility and purpose is to secure the ‘meaning of life through work,’ which cannot be satisfied by economic welfare policies, such as only receiving a ‘basic income.’ As a solution to this problem, I would like to present an ‘extended corporate management theory.’ However, this discussion does not assume that work opportunities in economic organizations are equivalent to the meaning of life. It does not deny that it is possible to force employment at a corporation or to find meaning in life through voluntary service, charity, leisure, etc. rather than work. However, as one of the meanings of life, an individual’s opportunity to become part of the cooperative means of production in the area of economic life is a practical channel through which an individual can contribute to social good. Corporations, as major social institutions, have a responsibility to provide the individual opportunity to do so and to allow for contribution to the social good. I would like to emphasize that the obligation to fulfill one’s role is consistent with citizens’ natural right to choose a meaningful life.
To this end, I first analyze the relationship between work and the meaning of life, and then I propose the need for corporations to expand ‘stakeholder theory’ as an appropriate alternative to technological unemployment. The distinction of this model is that it guarantees opportunities for the technologically displaced to work and participate in indirect management activities. They can contribute as consumers in ways that will help the corporation maximize performance and efficiency by satisfying the market’s demands ; as members of the corporate community, they can review whether the corporation’s management direction and decision-making are consistent with social good.
