운명을 가장한 회복력: 생애사 연구로 재구성된 알코올중독 회복자의 삶 (Resilience in Disguise of Destiny: Life of a Addict Recovered from Alcohol Reconstituted through Life History Study)

초록

본 연구는 15년 이상 회복을 유지하고 있는 한 남성 알코올중독 회복자의 생애사 연구이다. 연구의 목적은 알코올중독 회복자의 생애 이야기 분석을 통해 알코올중독의 원인과 회복과정에서 고유한 삶의 적응과정을 이해하고, 이를 통해 회복자의 삶을 ‘시대’라는 ‘시간성’과 ‘사회구조’라는 ‘장소성’을 포함하는 관점에서 살펴봄에 있다. 알코올중독을 경험하게 된 자아의 실체와 사회구조적 조건의 상호작용을 탐구하고, 중독으로부터의 회복과정을 시간의 흐름에 따라 이해하기 위해 Mandelbaum(1973)의 생애사 연구방법에 따라 ‘삶의 영역’, ‘전환점’, ‘적응’으로 나누어 살펴보았다.
연구결과, 연구참여자의 <삶의 영역>은 “알코올중독 아버지와 우울증 어머니”, “무관심한 가족들”, “중학교 입학 후 첫 음주경험”, “대학 진학 후 시작된 이상한 음주행태”, “군대에서의 의가사제대”, “정신병원 입·퇴원의 반복”, “사회복귀시설로의 마지막 기로”, “공부, 그리고 직업으로서 사회복지사”로 분석되었다. <전환점>은 “사랑받고 인정받고 싶은 시간들”, “부모에 대한 분노와 원망”, “벼랑 끝에 서서 발견한 그림자, 아버지와 어머니”, “끝내 스스로를 지켜낸 자의 의지와 용기”로 드러났다.
<적응>은 “방어기제의 사용”, “‘술’이라는 방어도구”, “허탈함의 발견과 영성의 회복”, “운명을 가장한 회복력”으로 도출되었다. 이러한 연구결과를 바탕으로 하여 회복패러다임에 입각한 사회복지 실천 및 정책 차원의 구체적인 논의를 제시하였다.

영어초록

This study focuses on the life history of a male alcohol addict who has recovered and maintained the recovery state for more than 15 years. The purpose of this study is to understand the causes of alcohol addiction and the adaptation process to one’s inherent life in the course of recovering from alcohol through the analysis of the life story of a person, and to examine the life of the recovered from the perspectives including a ‘time factor’ called ‘era’ and a ‘place factor’ called ‘social structure.’ In order to understand the interaction between the true nature of self and social structural condition and to understand the recovery process, this study adopts the study method of Mandelbaum (1973) on life history and divides the study points into ‘dimension of life,’ ‘turning point’ and ‘adaptation.’ The results of this study are as follows: first, ‘dimension of life’ of the study participant was divided into several sectors for the analysis including ‘the alcoholic father and the depressed mother,’ ‘the indifferent family members,’ ‘first drinking experience after entering the middle school,’ ‘abnormal drinking habit that started in the college life,’ ‘discharge from military service due to illness,’ ‘repeated admissions and discharges from the mental hospitals,’ ‘the turning point at a facility for rehabilitation to the society,’ and ‘study, and social worker as a profession.’ The ‘turning point’ was revealed as ‘the time of craving for love and acknowledgment,’ ‘anger and resentment for parents,’ ‘the shadows found at the edge of the cliff, father and mother,’ and ‘the willpower and courage of a person who protected himself to the end.’ The ‘adaptation’ was derived from the ‘use of defense mechanism,’ ‘a defense tool called alcohol,’ ‘discovery of emptiness and restoration of spirituality,’ and ‘resilience in disguise of destiny.’ Based on these results, this study presents concrete discussions on social welfare practices and policies founded on the recovery paradigm.
