교육과 삶의 시적 차원: ‘존재’와 ‘사고’와 ‘거주’ (The Poetic Dimension of Education and Living: Being, Thinking, and Dwelling)

“학문은 사고하지 않는다”는 후기 하이데거의 유명한 명제는 학문적 지식을 주된 교육내용으로 삼아온 인류의 오랜 교육전통의 가치를 근본적으로 의심하는 위험한 주장으로 간주되기 쉽다. 그러나 하이데거 존재론의 전체적인 틀 속에서 이해될 때 그 명제는 지적 활동으로서의 학문의 가치를 맹목적으로 폄하하는 것이 아니라 그것의 근원적 원천으로서의 ‘무' 또는 ‘존재 자체'를 강조하여 드러내는 것으로 이해될 수 있다. 자신의 근원적 성립기반으로서의 ‘무'를 망각할 때, 학문 활동은 더 이상 존재자의 ‘있음'에 경이를 느끼지 못한 채 단지 지식의 단편들을 모으고 분류하는 활동으로 전락하게 된다. 결국, 하이데거의 그 명제는 진정한 ‘사고'가 어떤 것인가를 말해주고 있으며, ‘사고'를 하며 세계를 살아가는 인간의 참된 ‘거주'의 방식을 그려내고 있다. ‘사고'는 우리에게 다가오면서 동시에 물러가는, 결코 멈추지 않는 존재의 자발적인 운동에 대한 인간의 수용적 응답이며, ‘거주'는 이 수용적 응답을 자신의 존재적 숙명으로 받아들이는 인간이 세계에 대하여 나타내는 삶의 태도를 가리킨다. 사고와 거주가 ‘시적’인 것은 그것이 존재의 현시를 돕는 것이기 때문이며, 또 한편 그럼으로써 완전히 현시될 수 없는 존재의 의미를 우리의 삶 속에서 선명하게 부각시키기 때문이다. 시적 거주자는 존재를 자신의 삶의 실천 속에서 확립해나가는 사람을 가리키며, 하이데거 존재론이 그려내는 교육받은 사람의 모습은 여기서 확인될 수 있다.

영어초록

“Science does not think.” is a notorious claim of the later Heidegger, which is often taken to undermine or depreciate the great tradition of education concerned with theoretical knowledge. The business of this paper is to offer one possible interpretation of this claim by way of situating it within a wide range of Heidegger's ontological writings.
Heidegger's deconstructive reading of the entire tradition of Western metaphysics leads him to the view that all the great systems of metaphysics in many historical epochs share the same structure, which can be dubbed ‘onto-theo-logy’ as the conflation of ontology with theology. Against the alleged claim that metaphysics as onto-theo-logy is concerned exclusively with ‘being’, Heidegger argues that what it has entertained as ‘being’ is in fact beings or entities, not being as such. According to Heidegger, what has been forgotten in the tradition of Western metaphysics and also of sciences is the Nothing or ‘being as such’ that functions as the primordial ontological source from which all the ‘why’ questions of metaphysicians and theorists arise. It is of course fully acknowledged that the claim “Science does not think.” should be read against the background of the Heidegger's somewhat dismal ontological diagnosis of the modern age. Efforts, however, are also made not to have the early Heidegger's constructive insight on the primordial ontological source of sciences overshadowed by the later Heidegger's narrative of the history of being.
With the highly provocative claim “Science does not think.”, it is then argued, Heidegger hints at the possibility of authentic ‘thinking’. Thinking in the genuine sense is a human being's receptive response to the self-revealing and self-withdrawing movement of being as such. Likewise, ‘dwelling’ refers to an appreciative and reverent attitude of a human being towards the world. For a poetic dweller, the world is the place in which the mystery of being, not his manipulating will, holds sway. A poetic dweller is the man who lets what is not yet present arrive into presencing and thereby embraces his ontological duty as a poetic responder. The person who thinks and dwells in this way is an educated man in the Heideggerian sense. One of the most valuable lessons we learn from Heidegger's ontology is that thinking and dwelling in this sense should be the true concerns of education.
