개벽의 소설가, 송기숙의 삶과 ‘문학의 정치’ (The Life of Song Gi-sook, a novelist of the ‘Gaebyeok’, and the ‘politics of literature’)

초록

한국현대사 가운데 정치 부재의 상황에서 사회의 구조적 모순과 인간의 구체적인 삶의 문제를 화두로 한 문학 작품을 올곧고 일관되게 창작해왔던 작가가 바로 송기숙이다. 그는 한국현대사의 역사적･정치적 변곡점에서 가장 민족적이면서 민중적 관점을 견지하는 소설들을 창작하는 데 그치지 않고 불의한 정치권력에 대항하면서 당대의 공동체가 가장 필요로 하는 긴요한 정치적 의제를 선취해냈다.
그럼에도 한국현대문학사에서 송기숙의 소설은 아직 제대로 된 문학사적 평가를 받지 못하고 있다. 그 원인은 그의 정치적 삶이 과도하게 고평가된 반면 그가 이룩한 문학적 성과가 지나치게 저평가되었기 때문이라 할 수 있다. 그의 정치적 투쟁과 삶으로 인해 문학적 성과가 지나치게 가려지는 과잉된 ‘의도의 오류’라는 평가의 맥락에 그의 소설들이 놓여져 있기 때문일 것이다. 치안과 정치를 동일시하고 순수모더니즘의 미적 자율성과 예술적 경험의 자율성을 동일시하면서 동시에 미학을 미학적 자율성과 미학적 타율성 중 어느 하나와만 동일시하는 비평의 관습도 송기숙 문학이 제대로 평가받지 못하는 주요한 원인이라 할 것이다.
이글은 송기숙의 삶과 문학과의 연관성을 전제로 ‘불패자’의 결기의 근원을 모색해보았다. 특히 그는 까뮈와 앙드레 말로의 영향을 받아 시대의 불의에 저항하고 새로운 시대를 열어나가는 행동하는 인물들의 모습을 그의 많은 소설에서 형상화하였다. 또한 그는 교육지표사건과 5･18광주민주화운동을 겪으면서 정치적 주체로서의 민중과 인민의 저항과 투쟁을 통해 도래하는 개벽의 공동체를 소설적으로 형상화하기도 하였다. 동시에 이 글은 송기숙 문학에 남겨진 정치와 미학과의 대립 혹은 이의 변증적 해결의 대안을 모색함으로써 현대소설사 속에서 송기숙 소설이 가진 문학사적 의의와 맥락을 재고해보았다.

영어초록

Song Gi-sook is the writer who has been creating literary works straight and consistently with issues of politics and concrete human life in the midst of the absence of politics in Korean modern history. At the historical and political inflection point of Korean modern history, he did not stop at creating novels that maintained the most national and popular viewpoint, but also preempted the urgent political agenda that the community of the time needed most while resisting unjust political power.
Nevertheless, in the history of modern Korean literature, Song Ki-suk's novels have not yet been properly evaluated in literary history. The cause can be said to be that his political life was excessively overestimated while his literary achievements were overly underestimated. It may be because his novels are placed in the context of the evaluation of excessive ‘error of intention’ in which his literary achievements are overshadowed by his political struggles and life. The custom of criticism that equates public order with politics, aesthetic autonomy of pure modernism and autonomy of artistic experience, and at the same time equating aesthetics with only one of aesthetic autonomy and aesthetic heteronomy is also a major reason why Song Gi-sook's literature is not properly evaluated.
This article searched for the source of the determination of the 'invincible' on the premise of the connection between Song Ki-suk's life and literature. In particular, he was influenced by Camus and Andre Malraux, and was inspired by figures of action who resisted the injustice of the times and opened a new era. It was embodied in many of his novels. In addition, while going through the educational index incident and the 5･18 Gwangju Democratization Movement, he tried to fictionalize the community of Gaebyeok coming through the people as political subjects and their resistance and struggle. At the same time, this article explored the literary significance and context of Song Ki-sook's novels in the history of modern novels by seeking an alternative to the confrontation between politics and aesthetics left in Song Ki-sook's literature or a dialectical solution to them.
