Kim Myoung-sun's life was like an 'island' surrounded by unbearable rumors as a new woman. The reason for her life's being composed of various rumors was derived from the limitations of her birth. She was defined as a social Other from the majority of people and became a scapegoat of the rumors due to her social status by birth as an illegimate daughter of a wealthy man and a concubine, as a study abroad student in Japan, as a writer and a new woman. Mass media and the public paid attention to all of her behaviors and her efforts to be free from the rumors were constantly frustrated by the limitations of her social status. The then social regulations did not allow her way of thinking and people expressed their interest by creating rumors about her who had superior academic background than themselves. The rumors were the centripetal force that restricted her thought and behaviors and her self-awareness was the centrifugal force that she wanted to be from the sphere of rumors. She was a protagonist of the life ‘composed’ by the antagonism of both parties.
Kim Myoung-sun exhibited her unfortunate life derived from the agony of individual life and failure in love by the confessional writing style. She could clearly expose the confrontation of convention and self through the confessional writing style and hoped that she would be free from the rumors at least in the moment when she was writing by tracing the ongoing rumors surrounding her into the characters. However, her self-confessional writing was nothing but re-confirming her existential limitations. She complained of her pain by various sounds made by the public and men in the majority of her works. In her early childhood, she was neglected from her own father and was betrayed by her lover; in the meantime, she had self-awareness as an orphan. She paid attention to an orphan to sublimate her sense of guilt for abandoning her real child; however, it was regarded as a hypocritical behavior in people's rumors. Furthermore, she was a mother as well as a ‘new’ woman, but the society did not allow her to rediscover her maternity. As such, her life filled with various rumors was ‘composed’ while she was entirely alienated from the society. In this regard, she was an unfortunate ‘new woman’ who corresponded to the rumors by means of various cultural activities including literature.
