서울 북악산 도화동 원림유적에 대한 고찰 (A Study of the Garden Remains in Mountain Bukak in Dohwadong, Seoul)

초록

본 연구에서는 서울 북악산에 소재하는 도화동 원림유적을 대상으로 문헌의 발굴·고증과 현장학술조사를 병행하여 도화동 원림유적의 위치와 유래·역사적 변천·원형경관을 고찰하는데 목적을 두고 연구를 진행하였다. 연구 결과, 문헌상에 나타나는 도화동 원림유적의 위치를 확인할 수 있었으며, 관련 문헌사료 고증을 통하여 도화동 원림유적의 역사적 변천과 원형경관·원림유적으로서의 가치를 확인할 수 있었다. 연구 결과, 확인된 도화동 원림유적의 원형과 원림유적으로서 가지는 가치를 정리하면 다음과 같다.
첫째, 도화동 원림유적은 남곤의 집터 또는 대은암과 관련한 유적으로 알려져 왔으나,『총쇄록』의 기록에 나타나는 암각자(巖刻字)와 원림유적 내 암각자가 완벽한 일치를 보임에 따라 1889년 고종의 어명에 의해 조성된 왕실어원인 도화동(桃花洞)임을 확인하였다.
둘째,『한경지략』에 의하면 도화동(桃花洞)이란 지명은 동(洞) 내에 복숭아나무가 많은 데에서 유래하였다고 전하며 『아정유고』,『연암집』등의 기록에서는 도화동에서 문인들이 모여 계회를 벌이고 화류(花柳)를 즐겼다고 전하는 바 도화동은 필운대에 버금가는 화류의 명소였음을 알 수 있었다.
셋째, 도화동 원림유적은 18세기에 들어와서는 명공석현(名公昔賢)을 비롯한 안동 김씨의 계회장소로 이용되어 오다가 1864년 흥선대원군의 집정 후 안동김씨 숙청과정에서 훼철·방치되었으며, 이후 1889년 고종(高宗)의 어명(御命)에 의해 왕실공간으로 변천되었음이 확인되었다.
넷째, 도화동은 자연 지세를 그대로 따르고, 주변의 유려한 경관을 자연스럽게 끌어들였으며, 개개의 경물과 요소에 의미를 부여하여 이상적 경관모델로서 상징적인 도화경(桃花景)을 구현한 전통원림의 원형을 그대로 보여주는 가치 있는 원림유적임을 알 수 있었다.
이렇듯 본 연구는 사료에 기초하여 현장조사와 학술고증을 통하여 도화동 원림유적의 실체와 원림유적으로서의 가치를 파악하는 데에 진전이 있었다. 다만 군사지역에 속해 있어 조사범위의 한계가 있고 현재까지 전면적인 발굴조사를 통한 유구와 원지형에 대한 파악이 시행되어야 할 것이며, 구체적인 원림유적의 범위와 구조를 파악하는 데에 한계가 있었다. 이에 따라 도화동 원림유적의 실체를 밝히고 향후 보존과 활용을 위하여 사적지정과 동시에 추가적인 학술발굴조사가 시행되어야 하며, 유적 내 원지형을 교란하는 시멘트 및 축대의 제거를 포함한 정비보존대책이 실시되어야 할 것이다.

영어초록

In this thesis, the garden remains in Dohwadong which is located in Seoul Buk-ak Mountain was examined, together with reference discovery and historical research, and onsite academic research conducted, for the purpose of studying the location of the garden remains in Dohwadong, its historical transitions and original landscape. As a result of the study, the location of the garden remains in Dohwadong was found; through the research of relevant historical sources, its historical transitions, its original landscape, and the value it has as a garden remains were examined. The following is the summary of the original form of the garden remains in Dohwadong and the value it has as a garden remains derived from this study.
First, the garden remains in Dohwadong had earlier known as a remains related to the housing site of Namgon or Daeunahm. However, it has been verified that is it Dohwadong which is an original word of a royal family formed by King Kojong's order in 1889 since the characters carved on rocks which is recorded in the book of『Chong Sweh Rok』perfectly conform to those within the garden remains in Dohwadong.
Second, it was learned that Dohwadong was the greatest renowned place for entertaining next to Pilundae; according to the book of『Hankyung Jiryak』, the name, Dohwadong, is known to have come from the fact that there are a large number of peach trees in the area; the records of those books,『Ahjungyugoh』,『Yonahmjip』, etc., also state that literary men gathered in Dohwadong and held ceremonies and entertained.
Third, it was learned that the garden remains in Dohwadong had been used as a place for holding ceremonies by the Ahndong Kims including Myonggongsukhyon; after Heungsundaewongun's governance, it was removed and neglected as the Ahndong Kims were purged and changed into a place for the royal family by the command of King Kojong in 1889.
Fourth, Dohwadong followed the geographical features of nature, embraced the elegant surrounding scenery naturally, and gave significance to the sceneries of the season and its element and, in this way, it, as an ideal landscape model, is a valuable garden remains which realized the symbolic Dohwa landscape and presents its original scenery of the traditional garden.
As mentioned above, this study, based on historical sources, has made progress in understanding the truth of the garden remains in Dohwadong and its value as a garden remains through the onsite research and academic historical investigation. However, since it is located within a military region, research was limitedly made. And also the range and structure of the garden remains was difficult to examine. Overall excavation is needed to figure out the remains and original terrain. Accordingly, in order to find out the truth of the garden remains in Dohwadong and for further preservation and application, it needs to be designated as a historical site and additional academic excavation research needs to be conducted; maintenance and preservation policies including removal of the cement and embankment, which disturb the original terrain within the remains, also need to be carried out.
