『금강산』의 역사적 위상에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Historical Status of Geumgangsan)

초록

본 논문은 대전 도솔산 보광사의 주지인 원명스님이 소장하고 있는 『금강산』이라는 새로운 서적을 소개하고 그 역사적 위상을 알아보기 위한 것이다. 『금강산』은 계룡산 동학사에 주석했던 청운거사 이면신이 갑오년(1894) 음력 3월부터 5월에 이르기까지 3개월에 걸쳐 충청도를 출발하여 서울과 근교 지방을 유람한 후 금강산을 거쳐 돌아온 내용을 일기의 형식으로 작성한 기행문이다.
『금강산』은 「봉래일기(蓬萊日記)」와 「서울[京山]에서 시작하여 금강산에 이르는 일기[自京山爲始至金剛日記]」, 「금강산 모든 곳의 판상시를 베껴냄[金剛諸處板上詩謄出]」의 세 부분으로 이루어진 금강산 기행문이다. 작품의 저자인 청운 이면신은 승려로서 계룡산 모처에서 출발하여 돌아오기까지의 여정을 날씨와 이동거리를 포함하여 이동한 사찰과 만났던 사람들, 사찰의 연기설화, 지명과 관련된 설화 등 자신이 보고 들은 내용을 상세하게 기록하고 있다. 특히 사찰의 배치도를 상세하게 그려 넣어 당시의 사찰의 모습을 확인할 수 있는 중요한 사료로서의 가치도 있다.
『금강산』의 역사적 위상을 살펴보면, 문학사적으로는 저자의 한시를 통해 저자는 불교에 심취한 사람이었고 문학적으로 뛰어났음을 알 수 있다. 또한 본문에서는 한글 지명과 음차로 사용되는 지명을 제시하고 있는데, 이는 한글이 어느 정도 정착했음을 보여준다. 불교사적 측면에서는 승려의 이름과 사찰명이 명확하게 기록되어 있다는 점에서 조선후기 불교사의 중요한 자료가 된다. 또한 승려임에도 불구하고 관청, 외국인과의 교류, 외국 병선의 완람, 장기여행을 했다는 점을 통해 당시 승려의 사회적 위상이 조선중기보다 높았다는 것을 알 수 있다.
『금강산』은 처음 발굴된 자료로서 조선후기 승려의 금강산 기행문이라는 점에서 역사・문화적 가치를 지닌 작품이다. 본 논문에서는 본 작품의 역사적 위상을 중심으로 살펴보았지만, 후속 연구를 통하여 사찰 복원 및 국어학, 종교학, 불교학적인 측면에서 다양한 접근이 가능할 것이다.

영어초록

This paper is to introduce a new book called Geumgangsan(金剛山) which is owned by the Ven. Won-myung(圓明), the chief master of the Dosolsan Bokwang Temple(兜率山 普光寺) in Daejeon city, and to grasp its historical status. Geumgangsan is a travel essay written by a Buddhist hermit Chungun(淸雲, 1857～1935), who used to stay at Donghak Temple(東鶴寺) in Mt. Kyeryong. Chungun departed Chungcheong Province for three months from March, 1894 until May, and traveled to Seoul and its suburbs, and returned by way of the Mt. Geumgang. While his traveling he wrote the contents in the form of a diary.
Geumgangsan, the travel essay to Mt. Geumgang, consists of three-part trip, 'A Diary of Bongrae(蓬萊日記)', 'A Diary of from Seoul to Mt. Geumgang(自京山爲始至金剛日記)', and 'Copy of the Poems in a Plank at Mt. Geumgang(金剛諸處板上詩謄出)'. The author of the work, as a monk, Chungun, keeps a detailed record of journey from his departure somewhere in Mt. Gyeryong to his return. Herecorded all the things he saw and heard such as the weather, the moving distance, the name of a temple he visited, the name of a people who he met with, the origination narrative of a temple, and the story related to the places name. In particular, as he added the detailed arrangement plan of the temple it also has a high value as an important historical data that can give us an information about the layout of the temple at that time.
Looking at the historical status of the Geumgangsan, in the aspect of the history of literature, the author's Chinese poetry shows that he was an ardent Buddhist and a man of literary ability. In the aspect of the history of Buddhism, it becomes the important sources of the Buddhist history in the late Joseon Dynasty as he recorded monk's names and temple's names precisely. In addition, through the records that he interacted with government officials, exchanged greetings with foreigners, boarded on a foreign warship, and did long-term travelling despite of the fact that he was a monk, it can be seen that the social status of the monks at that time was higher than that of the mid Joseon Dynasty.
Geumgangsan is the first excavated material with historical and cultural value in a sense that it is a monk's travel essay of Mt. Geumgang in late Joseon Dynasty. The subject of this paper is mainly focussed on the historical status of Geumgangsan. However, through subsequent research, various approaches will be possible in terms of the restoration of Buddhist temples, the study of Korean language, the science of religion, the religious studies, and the Buddhist studies.
