<星山別曲> 연구의 동향과 쟁점 (The Tendencies and issues in Seongsanbyeolgok research)

초록

이 글은 <성산별곡> 연구사를 상세히 정리하여 그간 논의의 내력을 밝힌 것이다. <성산별곡> 연구사에 관한 기존의 언급이 없지는 않으나 대개 소략하게 기술되어 있다는 한계를 가지고 있다. 아울러 <성산별곡>을 둘러싼 논쟁이 가장 활발하였던 1960～80년대로부터 대략 50～70여 년이 지난 지금 선행 연구의 가치를 다시금 살피고 후속 논의의 방향성을 재고해 보는 것 또한 연구사적 의의가 있을 것이다.
이에 본고에서는 국문학 연구사 초기의 논의부터 <성산별곡> 연구가 가장 활발히 이루어졌던 시기의 연구를 중점적으로 고찰하였다. 연구사 초기에 <성산별곡>은 정철의 다른 가사 작품에 비해 비교적 주목받지 못했다. 이러한 초기 연구의 흐름은 『송강별집추록유사』, 『문청공유사』, 『서하당유고』 등 정철과 그의 문학 활동에 직접 관계된 자료들이 발굴되면서 한 차례 변화를 맞이하게 된다. 위 자료들을 바탕으로 <성산별곡>의 창작 시기와 찬미 대상에 관한 다양한 의견들이 제출되었다. 이때까지 <성산별곡>의 작자는 의심의 여지 없이 송강으로 인정되었으나, 이후 제기된 石川 林億齡 창작설이 학계에 적잖은 반향을 일으키며, 연구의 초점은 작자 문제로 옮아갔다. 대부분의 연구는 석천 창작설에 반박하며 정철의 작품이라는 종래의 의견에 더욱 힘을 싣는 방향으로 나아갔다. 이후 반론 및 재반론이 오고 가며 <성산별곡>의 작가, 창작 시기, 찬미 대상 등과 관련한 연구가 활발히 이루어졌다. 후속 연구들은 이러한 연구 경향이 작품 내적 해석을 간과하고 있다고 비판하며, 작품의 구조와 미적 특질에 착안하였다. 해당 연구들은 <성산별곡> 주변의 여러 작품과의 영향 관계를 파악하여 <성산별곡>의 문학사적 위치를 해명한 것, 문답체, 대화체 구조에 착안하여 <성산별곡>만의 특징을 제시한 것, 또 한편으로는 누정, 원림 문화의 영역에서 <성산별곡>의 미적 특질을 밝힌 것 등으로 나누어 볼 수 있다.
이상의 연구사 검토를 통해 <성산별곡>을 둘러싼 여러 쟁점이 여전히 논의의 여지가 있는 상태이며, 다양한 해석적 가능성은 분명 열려있음을 확인할 수 있었다.

영어초록

This article organizes the research history of Seongsanbyeolgok in detail and reveals the history of discussions so far. Although there are existing references to the research history of Seongsanbyeolgok, it has the limitation that it is mostly described briefly. In addition, approximately 50 to 70 years have passed since the 1960s and 1980s when the controversy surrounding Seongsanbyeolgok was most active, and it would be historically significant to look again at the value of previous research and reconsider the direction of subsequent discussions.
Accordingly, in this paper, we focused on the research from the early stages of the history of Korean literature research to the period when research on Seongsanbyeolgok was most actively conducted. In the early stages of research history, Seongsanbyeolgok received relatively little attention compared to Jeong Cheol’s other lyric works. This early stream of research took a turn as materials directly related to Jeong Cheol and his literary activities were discovered. Based on the above data, various opinions were presented regarding the creation period of Seongsanbyeolgok and the object of praise. Until now, the author of Seongsanbyeolgok has been recognized without a doubt as Song Kang. Afterwards, the theory that Seokcheon (石川) was created by Im Eok-ryeong (林億齡) created quite a stir in academia, and the focus of research shifted to the issue of authorship. Most studies have refuted the theory of Seokcheon's creation and have moved in the direction of giving more weight to the existing opinion that it was Jeong Cheol's work. Since then, as counterarguments and rebuttals have come and gone, research has been actively conducted on the author, creation period, and object of praise for Seongsanbyeolgok. Subsequent studies criticized this research trend for overlooking the internal interpretation of the work, and focused on the structure and aesthetic characteristics of the work. The studies elucidated the position of Seongsanbyeolgok in literary history by understanding the relationship of influence with various works surrounding Seongsanbyeolgok, presented the unique characteristics of Seongsanbyeolgok by focusing on the conversational structures, On the other hand, it can be divided into those that reveal the aesthetic qualities of Seongsanbyeolgok in the area of ​​pavilion and garden culture.
Through the above review of research history, it was confirmed that many issues surrounding Seongsanbyeolgok are still open for discussion and that various interpretive possibilities are clearly open.
