가야산 지역 신라석탑에 대한 연구 (A study of stone pagodas dating from the Silla Period in the Gayasan Mountain area)

초록

본 논문은 가야산 지역의 신라석탑에 대한 고찰이다.
가야산이 위치한 합천은 삼국시대에 백제와 신라의 각축이 벌어졌던 군사적 요충지였고, 남북국 시대에는 신라의 왕경인 경주에서 전남 지역으로 향하는 육상 교통로의 거점이었다.
그리고 가야산 지역은 중심사찰인 해인사가 창건될 때부터 화엄이라는 불교 사상의 특성을 가졌던 것으로 보인다. 또한 해인사는 신라왕실의 막대한 후원을 받았고 법수사와 원당암 등도 왕실과 긴밀했던 것으로 보여 가야산에 석탑을 위시한 불교미술이 발달하는 밑거름이 되었을 것이다.
8세기 중반부터 건립되기 시작하는 가야산의 전형석탑은 중앙의 기술이 이 지역의 석탑 건립에 직접적인 영향을 주었음을 알려준다. 이후 9세기를 거치는 가야산 지역의 신라석탑은 중앙 양식에서 점차 벗어나 다양하게 확산하는 경향을 보이고 새로운 변용이 나타난다. 삼중기단과 토단, 안상의 장식으로 강조된 석탑의 예는 신라석탑의 양식적 변화가 특히 기단부에서 많이 이루어지고 있는 것을 보여준다. 이렇게 기단부를 강조하거나 높이면서 세장화하는 변화는 신라하대의 지방양식이며 가야산의 석탑들이 타 지역보다 양식적으로 선행하고 있어 다른 지방에 영향을 미쳤음을 알 수 있다. 그리고 9세기 후반기의 가야산에 등장하는 신양식의 석탑을 통해서 이 시기의 석탑이 새로운 계기를 마련함을 확인할 수 있다.
가야산 지역의 석탑은 다른 지방의 석탑에 영향을 미치고 후대 석탑에도 양식적 모티브를 제공하고 있어 뛰어난 불교미술의 역량을 보여준다.

영어초록

This paper is a study of the stone pagodas dating from the Silla Period that are situated in the Gayasan Mountain area.




Hapcheon, the county in which Gayasan Mountain is located, was a place of military strategic importance during the Three Kingdoms Period and hence the site of frequent clashes between Baekje and Silla. During the North–South States Period (698–926 CE), the area was an important hub of land transportation linking Gyeongju, the royal capital of the Silla Dynasty, with Jeonnam Province. It is presumed that the temples on Gayasan Mountain adopted Buddhist belief based on the Avatamsaka Sutra (The Flower Garland Sutra) since at the time of the foundation of Haeinsa Temple, which ultimately became the central temple of the Silla Dynasty. Indeed, Haeinsa Temple received generous financial support from the Silla royal family, with which the nearby Beopsusa Temple and Wondangam Hermitage were also said to be closely associated. Thus, it is thought that such a background served as the basis for the development of Buddhist art, including stone pagodas, in the area around Gayasan Mountain.




The stone pagodas in the Gayasan Mountain area, originally built in the mid-8th century, reveal that the architectural skills used in the royal capital had a direct influence on their construction. However, those built there in the 9th century or thereafter show that artisans gradually broke free of that influence and started creating diverse new styles. Silla-period stone pagodas featuring a three-tiered platform, dirt platform, and decorative carvings show that the stylistic changes were mostly focused on the platform. The emphasis on the enhanced platform and the decorative carvings on it were local features adopted during the late Silla Period. It is clear that stone pagodas in the Gayasan Mountain area, which led their counterparts in other areas in terms of style, exerted an influence on them. It is also evident that the stone pagodas erected on Gayasan Mountain in the late 9th century ushered in a new style.




To summarize, stone pagodas in the Gayasan Mountain area had an influence on their counterparts in other areas, and set an example for subsequent structures in terms of style. Overall, they attest to the outstanding quality of Buddhist art.
