북한산의 역사 유적과 발굴 현황 -북한산성과 탕춘대성을 중심으로- (Historical Relics and Excavations of Bukhansan Mountain)

초록

북한산은 남산, 한강과 함께 서울을 상징하는 대표적인 상징이기도 하며 세계인과 한국사람이 가장 많이 찾는 명산이자, ‘한양의 수도성곽’으로서 세계문화유산 등재를 추진하고 있는 북한산성과 탕춘대성이 위치하고 있는 곳이기도 하다.
북한산성과 탕춘대성은 문화재청으로부터 ‘수도성곽과 방어산성’이라는 ‘도성방어 시스템의 완성’을 탁월한 보편적 가치로 권고 받은 이후 한양도성-탕춘대성-북한산성을 연계하여 세계문화유산으로 등재하기 위해 고양시(경기도, 경기문화재단)와 서울시는 긴밀하게 협조하고 있으며, 2022년 12월에는 한양도성-탕춘대성-북한산성이 ‘우선등재목록’으로, 2023년 4월에는 등재후보로 선정되기도 하였다.
세계문화유산으로 등재를 추진하고 있는 북한산성과 한양도성은 그동안 진행되어온 고고학적 조사와 학술조사 등을 통해 탁월한 보편적 가치를 증명하기 위한 과정을 거쳐 왔으나, 탕춘대성은 그러한 준비가 상대적으로 부족한 것은 사실이다.
북한산성에 대한 연구는 문헌, 고고학적 조사, 민속학, 불교문화재 등 다양한 분야에서 진행되어 그 결과물로 북한산성 사료총서가 발간되었고, 북한산성과 행궁지에 대한 종합정비계획이 별도로 수립되어 장기적인 시각에서 복원과 정비가 이루어지고 있다.
북한산성은 2011년의 행궁지에 대한 시굴조사를 시작으로 지금까지 모두 19차례의 고고학적 조사를 통해 『북한지』등에서 기록으로 전해지던 성랑지를 비롯하여 북한산성과 관련된 내부 시설 등에 대한 조사가 실시되었다. 이러한 조사를 통해 북한산성의 축조기법과 축조시기를 확인할 수 있었으며, 북한산성 행궁지의 면모를 확인할 수 있었다.
북한산성 성벽 및 부속시설에 대한 연차발굴을 통해 성곽시설물로는 성랑지와 수구, 치성, 돈대 등을 확인하였고, 성벽 외부에서는 고려시대에 축조된 중흥산성의 기저부와 보축 성벽, 계단식 석축 등을 확인하였다.
탕춘대성 성곽에 대한 실제적인 조사는 2022년과 2023년 두 차례의 시‧발굴조사에 불과한 실정이다.
두 차례의 조사를 통해 석성구간의 조성방법과 토성구간으로 알려진 곳에서는 인위적인 축석의 양상을 확인할 수 있었다. 다만 토성구간의 경우 확인된 석렬의 상부로 삭평이 심한 상태이기도 하며, 극히 일부분에 대한 조사를 통해 얻어진 결과로 전체적인 탕춘대성의 양상을 설명하기에는 어려움이 있다.
모두가 주지하다시피 탕춘대성은 북한산성과 한양도성을 이어 견고한 방어체제를 구축하고자 하는 목적으로 만들어졌다. 앞으로 토성구간에 대한 확인과 체성부와 관련된 시설물의 조사 등 학술연구와 발굴조사를 통한 자료의 축적으로 탕춘대성의 양상을 파악할 수 있는 연구성과가 확인되길 기대한다.

영어초록

Bukhansan Mountain, along with Namsan Mountain and Hangang River, is also a representative landmark of Seoul, and is the most visited mountain by Koreans and people from all around the world. In addition, it is the place where Bukhansanseong Fortress and Tangchundaesung Fortress, which are in the process of being listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site as the ‘capital fortress of Hangyang’, are located.
After Bukhansanseong Fortress and Tangchundaeseong Fortress were recommended by the Cultural Heritage Administration for the ‘completion of the capital defense system’ called ‘capital fortress and defense fortress’ as an outstanding universal value, Goyang City (Gyeonggi-do Province, Gyeonggi Cultural Foundation) and Seoul Metropolitan City are closely cooperating to link Seoul City Wall (Hanyangdoseon) - Tangchundaeseong Fortress - Bukhansanseong Fortress and register it as a World Cultural Heritage. In December 2022, Seoul City Wall- Tangchundaeseong Fortress - Bukhansanseong Fortress were selected as "priority registration lists" and selected as registration candidates in April 2023.
Bukhansanseong Fortress and Seoul City Wall, which are in the process to be listed as World Heritage Sites, have gone through the process of proving their outstanding universal value through archaeological and academic research, but it is true that such preparations for Tangchundaesung Fortress are relatively lacking.
Research on Bukhansanseong Fortress was conducted in various fields including literature studies, archaeological investigation, folklore, and Buddhist cultural properties, and as a result, a series of historical records for Bukhansanseon Fortress has been published. A comprehensive maintenance plan for Bukhansanseong Fortress and Haenggungji (temporary palace site) has been separately established to ensure restoration and maintenance from a long-term perspective.
Starting with a trial digging of the Haenggungji in 2011, a total of 19 archaeological investigations have been conducted on Bukhansanseong Fortress, including the Seongnangji recorded in books such as Bukhanji, as well as internal facilities related to Bukhansanseong Fortress. Through these investigations, it was possible to confirm that the construction technique and construction period of Bukhansanseong Fortress, and the aspects of Haenggungji was also founded.
Through the annual excavations of the walls and auxiliary facilities of Bukhansanseong, Seongnangji(城廊址), Soogoo(水口), Chiseong(雉城), and Dondae(墩臺) were identified as fortress facilities. Furthermore, outside the wall, the base, walls and stepped stonework of Jungheungsanseong Fortress, built during the Goryeo Dynasty, were identified.
The actual investigation of the Tangchundaeseong Fortress was conducted only twice: trial digging and excavation in 2022 and 2023.
Through two excavations, it was possible to find the construction method of the stone section and the pattern of artificial construction in earthen sections. However, in the case of the earthen section, the upper part of stone section, is in a state of severe flattening, and it is difficult to explain the overall aspect of aspect of Tangchundaeseong Fortress with the limited results.
As everyone knows, Tangchundaesung Fortress was built for the purpose of enhancing a solid defense system connecting Bukhansanseong Fortress and Seoul City Wall. In the future, it is hoped that the research results that will allow us to understand the overall aspects of Tangchungdaeseong Fortress will be found through the accumulation of data through academic research and excavation on the earthen section and other related facilities.
