이동동사 관용표현의 동기화 양상 (Motivation of Motion Verb Idiomatic Expressions)

초록

이 연구의 목표는 인지언어학적 관점에서 이동동사 관용표현의 동기화 과정과 그 의미 특성을 분석하는 데 있다. 이동동사는 동사의 의미론적 분류로서 이동체가 출발 장소로부터 이동 경로를 따라 목표 장소로 이동하는 사건을 나타내는 동사 부류를 말한다. 이동동사 관용표현은 다른 관용표현들에 비해 상대적으로 의미의 투명도가 높은 편이며, 그 의미 구성 과정은 개념적 은유와 환유로 설명가능하다.
개념적 은유는 유사성에 따른 것으로, 이동 사건 도식에서 이동체, 출발 장소, 목표 장소, 이동 경로가 구체적 대상에서 추상적 대상으로 전이되어 관용적 의미가 구성된다. 이동체, 출발 장소, 목표 장소, 이동 경로 중에서 윤곽화되는 대상에 따라 관용표현의 논항 구조가 달라진다. 또한, 개념적 환유는 인접성에 따른 것으로, 여러 개의 하위 사건들 중에서, 이동 사건이 윤곽화되어 전체 사건을 확대 지칭하여 관용적 의미가 구성된다.
이동동사 관용표현은 다음과 같은 의미적 특성을 지닌다. 첫째, 양방향으로의 이동을 나타내는 이동동사 관용표현 쌍이 존재한다. 이들 관용표현 쌍은 형태적으로 이동의 방향이 서로 대칭을 이루면서 의미적으로도 서로 상반된 뜻으로 사용된다. 둘째, 이동의 방향과 관련하여 방향적 은유가 나타난다. 이동동사의 이동 방향에 따라, ‘위, 앞, 오른쪽, 가까움’은 ‘긍정’의 의미를 지향하고, ‘아래, 뒤, 왼쪽, 멂’은 ‘부정’의 의미를 지향한다. 셋째, 기존에 존재하는 이동동사 관용표현을 참고하여 그에 대립되는 의미의 새로운 관용표현이 파생되어 사용되기도 하고, 긍정이나 부정의 의미를 지닌 이동동사 관용표현이 반대의 의미로도 사용됨에 따라 의미적 중화가 일어나기도 한다.

영어초록

The goal of this study is to analyze the motivation process of idiomatic expressions using motion verbs as well as their semantic characteristics from a Cognitive Linguistics perspective. As a semantic category, motion verbs refer to a type of verb that expresses an event wherein an agent moves to a target location along a path from a starting location. Idiomatic expressions using motion verbs have a relatively more transparent meaning than other idiomatic expressions, and the process of forming their meaning can be explained as conceptual metaphor and conceptual metonymy.
Conceptual metaphor is a consequence of similarity, with the agent, starting location, target location, and path, in the diagram of a motion event, transferring from concrete subjects to abstract subjects, creating an idiomatic meaning. Depending on the subject highlighted between agent, starting location, target location, and path, the argument structure of the idiomatic expression changes. In addition, conceptual metonymy is a consequence of contiguity. It highlights the motion event, out of various subevents, expanding it to refer to the overall event thereby creating an idiomatic meaning.
Idiomatic expressions using motion verbs possess the following semantic characteristics. First, there are idiomatic pairs using motion verbs that indicate bilateral motion. These idiomatic pairs are used to refer to a semantically conflicting meaning as the direction of motion morphologically forms symmetry. Second, in relation to the direction of motion, orientational metaphor appears. Depending on the direction of motion of the motion verb, ‘up, front, right, close’ are directed toward a ‘positive’ meaning, while ‘down, behind, left, far’ are directed toward a ‘negative’ meaning. Third, new idiomatic expressions can be derived in reference to existing idiomatic expressions using motion verbs, with a meaning that conflicts to those of existing expressions, and semantic neutralization can occur as idiomatic expressions using motion verbs with a positive or negative meaning are used to refer to their opposite meaning.
