조선후기 ‘음악사 쓰기’에 대한 제언 (A Study on the ‘Music History Writing’ of the Late Joseon Dynasty)

초록

본 연구는 조선후기 음악사 연구의 현황과 쟁점을 돌아보고, 미래에 발간될 음악사 단행본의 서술에 있어서 생각해보아야 할 문제들을 짚어보기 위해 수행되었다.
먼저 기존 음악사 단행본을 살펴본 결과, 절반 이상의 학자들이 임진왜란을 조선후기의 기점으로 보고 있었고, 장사훈은 『금합자보』, 전인평은 『양금신보』를 조선후기의 기점으로 보고 있었다. 전인평은 조선후기를 ‘인본주의 음악시대’로, 송방송은 조선후기를 ‘근대로 전환기의 민간음악시대’로 규정하였다. 송혜진과 전지영이 집필한 음악사에서는 이전의 음악사에 비해 서민들의 음악 문화에 대한 비중이 크게 늘어나 있음을 알 수 있었다.
개별 음악사 연구의 쟁점은 ‘『속악원보』 편찬 시기와 그 수록 음악에 대한 해석’, ‘계면조 변화에 대한 다양한 해석’, ‘정조의 음악관에 대한 평가’ 항목으로 정리하였다. 음악사 단행본들의 서술 내용 중에는 풍류방 음악문화를 중인음악과 동일시하고 있는 점에 문제가 있었고, 향후 음악사 서술에 있어서 민요 관련 내용이 보충되어야 할 필요성이 있음을 알 수 있었다. 또한, 2000년대 이후 새롭게 논의된 병와 이형상의 악론과 가집에 대한 연구, 거문고와 고금을 대상으로 한 금론 연구 등의 여러 연구 성과들을 살펴보았다.
‘음악사 쓰기’는 사료를 선택하여 서술하는 과정으로, 사료 비판의 과정을 통해 검증된 사료는 ‘해석’의 과정을 거쳐 음악사에 서술되어야 한다. 사료의 ‘해석’을 위해서는 사료 안의 숨은 의미를 파악할 수 있는 ‘통찰력’과 ‘직관력’이 필요하다. 본 연구자는 ‘통찰력’과 ‘직관력’을 기르기 위해서 다양한 학문적 소통과 비판을 경청하는 태도, 타 학문 분야의 연구 성과에 대한 관심, 역사적 사건이 일어난 과거의 관점에서 생각하는 자세 등이 필요하다는 의견을 제시하였다.
이번 연구를 통해 ‘음악사 쓰기’에서 ‘사료의 비판’과 ‘사료의 해석’ 과정의 중요성을 강조한 필자의 자그마한 목소리가 미래의 ‘음악사 쓰기’에 보탬이 되기를 바란다.

영어초록

This study was conducted to look back on the current situation and issues of music history of the late Joseon Dynasty, and to point out the issues that should be considered in the description of music history books published in the future.
First, after looking at the existing music history books, more than half of scholars regarded the Imjin war of 1592 as the starting point of the late Joseon Dynasty, and Jang Sa-hoon considered 『Geumhapjabo』 and Jeon In-pyeong considered 『Yanggeumsinbo』 as the starting point of the late Joseon Dynasty. Jeon In-pyeong defined the late Joseon period as ‘the humanist music period’, and Song Bang-song defined the late Joseon period as ‘the period of folk music in the transition period to modern period’. In the music history books written by Song Hye-jin and Jeon Ji-young, it can be seen that the proportion of common people’s music culture has increased significantly compared to the previous books of music history.
Next, the results discussed in the individual research results are summarized as follows. The issues in the study of music history were organized into the following categories: ‘The period of compilation of 『Sokakwonbo』 and the interpretation of the music contained therein’, ‘various interpretations of gyemyeonjo change’, and ‘evaluation of King Jeongjo’s musical perspective’. Among the narratives of the books of music history, there was a problem in equating Pungryubang(風流房) music culture with the middle class’s music. And it was found that there is a need to supplement the contents related to folk songs in the future description of music history.
In addition, the achievements newly discussed since the 2000s were examined, such as the study of music theory and gajip(歌集, a collection of songs) of Lee Hyung-sang, and the study of related to geomungo, gogeum(古琴) and so on.
‘Music history writing’ is a process of selecting and describing the historical source, the validated source criticized shall be described in the history of music through the process of ‘interpretation’. And ‘insight’ and ‘intuition’ are necessary to grasp the hidden meaning in the historical source. In order to develop such ‘sight’ and ‘intuition’, I think it is necessary to have various academic communication, attitude of listening to criticism, interest in the achievements of other study field, and attitude of thinking from the perspective of the past when historical events occurred.
Through this study, I hope that my small voice, which emphasizes the importance of the ‘source criticism’ and ‘source interpretation’ process in ‘music history writing’, will contribute to future music history writing.
