桂苑筆耕集 의 문화사적 이해 (Understanding Gyewonpilgyeongjip( 桂苑筆耕集 ) from a Cultural Historical Perspective)

초록

본고는 ‘동아시아의 문인지식인’이라는 관점에서, 崔致遠(857～?)과 그가 남긴 桂苑筆耕集 을 검토하였다.
먼저 제1장에서는 기왕의 연구성과를 간략히 검토하면서, 일국사적 관점이나 ‘육두품지식인론’의문제점을 비판하고 대신 ‘동아시아의 문인지식인’이라는 새로운 관점에서 연구할 것을 제언하였다.
제2장에서는 文章 立身이라는 관점에서, 최치원의 도당 유학과 과거 급제 및 高騈의 幕僚 생활을다각도로 살펴보았다.
제3장에서는 桂苑筆耕集 과 東文選 (1478년)에 수록된 桂苑筆耕集 을 문체를 중심으로 비교 검토함으로써, 桂苑筆耕集 으로 상징되는 당의 문장이 신라 사회로 확산되는 양상을 추적하였다. 또한桂苑筆耕集 의 문장은 이념적으로 유교와 도교적 색채가 강한 데 반하여, 귀국 이후 최치원의 문장에서는 불교적 색채가 두드러졌음을 지적함으로써, 한문 문장의 신라적 수용의 특색을 추출하고자 하였다.
향후 이러한 결과를 중국이나 일본과 비교한다면, 한국 사회가 한문 문장을 수용한 양상과 특징을드러낼 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

Examined in this article, is the life of the renowned historic figure named Choi Chi-won(崔致遠, 857～?). He is defined here as a ‘Literary intellectual of East Asia,’ and his GyewonPilgyeongjip( 桂苑筆耕集 ) is examined here as well.
In Chapter 1, past studies are evaluated with a critical point of view. Previous perspectives which tended to examine his life as a life that was confined to the parameters of a single country, or as a life that was defined by a certain social boundary(and restrictions) which we used to recognize by calling him as an “intellectual trapped in the identity of a ‘Dupum-class 6’ figure,” are critically analyzed here. It is also suggested here that it would be appropriate to approach his life from a perspective that would view his life as a literary intellectual whose life and ideas encompassed the entire East Asia, instead of a single country inside it.
In Chapter 2, his life and oversea studies inside Dang China/唐, his successful passing of the Dang imperial examination, and his career as an adjutant(幕僚) to a Dang local governmental official named Go Byeon/高騈, are all examined. These aspects of his life are very important, as he was a figure whose career ascended because his writings and compositions were considered exceptional by many people.
In Chapter 3, contents of GyewonPilgyeongjip( 桂苑筆耕集 ) and the one that was inserted in Dongmun-seon/東文選 (1478) are examined and compared, in order to determine how the Dang Composition style vividly demonstrated in GyewonPilgyeongjip ( 桂苑筆耕集 ) actually spreaded throughout the Shilla society. It is suggested that the composition styles featured in GyewonPilgyeongjip( 桂苑筆耕集 )displays strong colors of Confucianism and Taoism, while his writings that were written after his return from Dang displayed Buddhist nuances and contents instead. This could indicate the way the Shilla people accepted and embraced Chinese writings and composition styles.
In the future, by engaging in comparative studies using the results from the analysis of this article and also cases from China and Japan, what kind of characteristics were displayed by the Korean people when they were embracing and adopting Chinese writings and composition styles could be determined and defined.
