譚其驤의 <<中國歷史地圖集>> 編纂과 中國現代歷史地理學의 誕生 (The Compilation of The Historical Atlas of China by Tan Qixang and the Birth of Chinese Modern Historical Geography)

초록

이 논문은 『中國歷史地圖集』의 편찬자인 탄치샹(譚其驤, 1911-1992)의 『중국역사지도집』 편찬 과정과 그의 학문적 관점 등에 주목하여 중국현대역사지리학이 탄생하는 것을 살펴보았다. 유구한 전통을 가진 중국의 역사지리학은 근대 학문이 전문화, 분과체제화 하는 와중에 역사학과 지리학의 두 분과로 분화, 계승되었다. 역사학과가 역사지리학으로써 연혁지리를 대체했다고 할 수도 있지만, 역사학과의 역사지리학에는 전통시대 연혁지리학의 학술적 특징이 여전히 강하게 계승되었다. 禹貢學會와 함께 성립한 근대역사지리학에는 沿革地理學의 학술적 전통이 강렬히 계승되었고, 이는 탄치샹의 학술에도 그대로 계승되었다. 중국의 역대연혁지도를 편찬하고자 했던 우공학회의 오랜 숙원 또한 탄치샹을 통해 완성되었다.
양서우징(楊守敬)의 『歷代輿地圖』를 개편하는 것에서 시작되었던 『중국역사지도집』의 편찬은 역사서를 읽는 데 도움이 되게 한다는 ‘讀史地圖’의 전통에서 제작된 것이라 할 수 있다. 탄치샹이 편찬한 이 역사지도집은 새로운 방법론을 도입하여 제작하여 전통적 연혁지리학의 방법 면에서의 한계를 극복함으로써, 현대역사지리학의 탄생을 고하는 것이기도 하다. 그러나 春秋戰國부터 明代까지의 中原王朝만을 다뤘던 『역대여지도』의 내용상의 결함을 보완하여 淸代까지 중국의 역대 강역 전체를 포괄한 역사지도를 제작함으로써 오히려 청대 經世致用的 輿志學의 전통은 더욱 강화되었다. 중화인민공화국 건국 이후, 중국은 대내외적으로 영토와 민족의 통일이란 과제를 수행해야 했기 때문이다. 중화인민공화국은 건국과 더불어 자신의 역사를 새롭게 서술하는 한편, 그 역사가 전개된 공간에 대한 구체적 개념을 만들어야 했고, 『중국역사지도집』은 그 실제적 결과물이다. 따라서 『중국역사지도집』은 현대역사지리학의 성과물인 동시에 중국의 연혁지리학과 청대 경세치용적 여지학의 전통을 계승, 발전시킨 것으로도 보아야 할 것이다.

영어초록

In this paper, it was reviewed the birth of the modern historical geography in China, focusing on the compilation process of The Historical Atlas of China and its main compiler, Tan Qixang’s academic viewpoints.
Traditionally, Chinese historical geography had a long and strong legacy, it was divided into two different academic fields, history and geography along with the wave of specialization and departmentalization of the modern academics.
While it could be said that the Department of History replaced the traditional evolution geology using historical geography, but the academic characteristics from the evolution geology was embedded and inherited in this new and modern historical geography.
The establishment of the modern historical geography was closely related to the Yu Gong Society and the inherent academic heritage of evolution of geography was effected Tan Qixiang‘s scholarship. It was also Tan who attained the long-cherished aspiration of Yu Gong Society that was the completion of the existing evolution of geography The compilation of the Historical Atlas of China was originally prompted by the need to revise The Chronological Maps of Historical Geography by Yang Shoujing and the Atlas was based upon the principle of aiding map for understanding history.
Adopting new methodology, this Tan’s Atlas made it available to overcome the methodical limitations of the traditional evolution geography and became the announcement of the birth of new modern historical geography.
However, unlike to The Chronological Maps of Historical Geography that only covered Central Dynasty from the age of Chinese warring states to Ming dynasty, Tan’s Historical Atlas of China included Qing Dynasty to encompass the whole territory of China and resulted to strengthen the heritage of geography of territory under the influence of Statecraft(經世致用) in Qing Dynasty.
Since the founding of People's Republic of China, its government was continually challenged by the task to unify the territory and nation both internally and externally.
After founding of new nation, People's Republic of China attempted to narrate its history newly, and also to make a tangible concept of the space where the history was taken place. In short ,the Historical Atlas of China was the prominent and substantive outcome of the attempt.
Therefore, it should be noted that The Historical Atlas of China was not only the achievement of modern historical geography but also the successor of evolution of geography and geography of territory from the past.
