보완적 전유역량, 꽌시, 공동 제품혁신 : 중국 자동차 산업 내 다국적 공급사 (Complementary appropriative capability, guanxi, and collaborative product innovation: Multinational suppliers’ in the Chinese Automotive Industry)

초록

본 연구는 해외직접투자를 통해 진출한 중국 자동차 산업 내 다국적기업을 대상으로 산업의 환경, 기술보호 역량, 제품혁신 성과를 분석한다. 이들 기업은 중국 완성차 제조사의 공급사로서 현지에서 기술 혁신 활동을 펼치고 있다. 연구모형 관련, 중국 자동차 산업의 구조는 기술의 역동성, 시장의 급변성, 제도의 불안정성으로 파악하였다. 현지에 진출한 해외 다국적기업의 기술보호 역량은 보완적 전유역량으로 개념화 하여 기술보호 역량이 현지의 핵심 고객사와의 공동 제품혁신 성과에 미치는 영향을 조사하였다. 그리고 다국적기업과 중국 정부와의 꽌시가 기업의 전유역량과 제품혁신 성과를 어느 정도 조절하는지 검증하였다. 수집한 자료는 부분최소제곱법 구조방정식으로 분석하였다. 연구결과는 제도의 불안정성과 기술의 복잡성이 현지에 진출한 다국적기업 공급사의 전유역량을 촉진시키고, 보완적 전유역량은 공동 제품혁신 성과에 정의 영향을 끼치는 것으로 나타났다. 다국적기업 공급사의 정부 꽌시는 기업의 전유역량과 현지 파트너와의 공동 제품혁신 성과 간의 관계에 부정적인 조절효과를 나타냈다. 본 연구는 신흥국의 기술·제도적 환경과 기업의 기술보호 행위를 통합하여 분석함으로써 기존 신흥국 제도와 기술혁신 관련 문헌을 확장시키며, 중국 자동차 시장에 진출한 외국인 투자기업에 기술보호와 비공식적 제도와 관련한 관리적 시사점을 제공한다.

영어초록

This study investigates the impacts of industrial environments on appropriative capability and collaborative product innovation performance of multinational enterprises (MNEs) directly invested in the Chinese automotive sector. They are the suppliers of local automotive assemblers and actively perform technological innovation activities in the local market. Conceptually we view technological dynamics, market turbulence, and institutional instability as the key characteristics of the industrial environment. We conceptualize MNEs’ abilities of technology protection in the market as complementary appropriative capability (CAP) that influences collaborative product innovation performance with local customers. Furthermore, the conceptual model includes guanxi to examine to which extent MNEs’ external relationships with the host government moderate the association between CAP and collaborative innovation outcomes. We analyzed data using partial least square structural equation modeling. Findings show that Chinese technological and institutional environments in the automotive sector facilitate MNEs’ CAP, which, in turn, positively affects collaborative production innovation with their key customers. However, MNEs’guanxi with the government negatively moderates the relationship between CAP and collaborative product innovation performance. This study conceptually integrates technological and institutional environments with MNEs’technology protection and innovation behaviors and analyses their relationships in the Chinese automotive context. Thus, the findings offer implications for extant international business strategy and technological innovation research and practical lessons to MNEs operating in emerging economies regarding institution and appropriability.
