탈-근대적 문학사의 가능성과 제안들-『한국문학사』 논쟁과 그 이후의 문학사 방법 논의를 중심으로- (Possibilities of Non-modern Literary History-Focusing on the Debate about the History of Korean Literature-)

초록

이 글의 목표는 『한국문학사』와 그 논쟁에 나타난 담론의 한계를 살펴보며, 『한국문학사』 주변에 존재했던 다양한 문학사의 방법론들을 함께 살펴보는 것이다. 김현과 김윤식은 『한국문학사』를 통해 서구식 문학과 역사의 기준에서 벗어나 주체적 작품 비평을 통해 작품간의 ‘관계’들로 이루어진 문학사를 쓰고자 했다. 이는 곧 비평가의 주체적 독서 행위로서 작품과 작품, 지식과 지식을 연결짓고자 하는 것이었다. 하지만 한국의 후진성과 ‘근대’라는 역사의 발전이라는 전제에서 벗어나지 못하면서 『한국문학사』는 한국과 서구의 동등성을 신념화하는 것에 그치고 만다.
해석자의 ‘지금여기’에 의해 의미가 구성되는 비평적 작업으로서의 문학사를 제안하는 김주연은 문학의 사회성 역시 작품의 ‘관계’를 통해 드러나는 것이라고 본다. 이때 ‘관계’가 예외적 개인인 작가와 독자의 마주침으로 이해되면서, 역사와 사회는 특정한 자격을 부여받은 자들의 것으로 환원된다. 그가 사숙했던 선진 문화로서의 독일에 내재한 후진국 콤플렉스, 보편을 상징하는 유럽이라는 지역 공간 내에 위치했던 독일의 ‘특수함’과 같은 모순 상황은 역설적으로 이방인 김주연에게 후진-선진, 보편-특수의 위계에 집착하지 않을 수 있었던 계기가 되었다. 그러나 김주연이 도달한 비-보편, 비-선조적 세계 인식은 문학을 포함한 정신적인 것으로서의 문화를 지나치게 숭고한 것으로 상정하게 한다.
한편, 김현은 『한국문학사의 위상』에서 ‘나’의 독서 경험을 기준으로 문학의 범주를 규정하는 과정에서 의미 구현 주체로서의 독자를 발견하게 된다. 독자의 발견은 문학의 의미를 드러내는 과정에서 작가라는 하나의 중심만이 아니라, 수많은 독자를 통해 다양한 중심들을 인정하는 방식이다. 또한 김치수는 사회사나 일반사의 반영으로서의 문학사를 거부하고, 이에 따른 단순한 시대 구분을 넘어서고자 한다. 이와 같은 시도는 문학의 중심을 해체하고 구조로서의 문학사를 서술하고자 하는 움직임으로도 이어진다. 또한 김치수는 문화의 우열을 말하는 것이 그 문화를 소유한 민족, 즉 종족 중심주의적 발상이며, 후진국 문화의 우수성을 말하는 것 또한 종족 중심주의적 발상이라고 지적한다. 문화에 내재한 힘의 질서를 자각하는 김치수는 선-후와 보편-특수와 같은 이분법에 내재한 인식의 틀을 새롭게 함으로써만 서구 중심의 보편성을 넘어 새로운 문학사가 가능할 것이라고 제안한다.

영어초록

This article aims to examine the limits of discourse in the Kim Hyun and Kim Yoon-sik's History of Korean Literature and its debates, and to analyze the various methodologies about the history of literature in 1970's. The main aim of the History of Korean literature was to deviate from Western literary and historical standards and to write a history of literature composed of topics ranging from the relationships between different works through subjective criticism. However, it was only a matter of convincing people of the equality between Korea and the West.
The suggestion of Kim Joo-yeon's literary history, which had not paid attention because of discourse on subjectivity and ethnicity at that time, provided a way to carry out existing literary ideals. Kim Ju-yeon suggests a literary history as a critical work composed of the meaning of the interpreter's "here and now," and he insists that the sociality of literature is also revealed through its relationship of literary history. The relationship of literary history is understood as an encounter between the artist and the reader, who is an exceptional individual, and history and society, which is reduced to those with specific qualifications. Although Germany is located in Europe, but it symbolizes underdeveloped countries and the universes in parallel. Paradoxically it made Kim Joo-yeon to be part of the hierarchy of the advanced. However, the non-universal recognition attained by Kim Joo-yeon assumes that the culture of spirituality is overly sublime.
On the other hand, in the Phase of Korean Literature, Kim Hyun tries to construct a literary history by the process of defining the identity of literature using a text that was individually semantified through personal reading experience. It leads to the awareness that the history of literature answers the question of the function of the here-and-now literature, identifying the reader as the point where the meaning of the text should reach. In addition, Kim Chi-soo refuses to see literary history as a reflection of society or general history and talks of understanding the history of literature as a structure placed within a culture that goes beyond the simple division of time. The argument about the superiority of culture is an ethnocentric idea. The perception of the periphery has allowed us to understand the flow of Korean literature by moving away from the trend of Western literary movement. More precisely, it is not similar to the history of the West and that of South Korea, which makes us reconsider the perception of the advanced and backward, and the center and periphery of literature.
