강증산의 신종교적 영성과 도덕적 비젼 (The new meanings of Kang Jeongsan's religious spirituality and moral vision)

초록

본 고는 강증산의 종교사상을 그의 신종교적 영성과 도덕적 비젼이라는 주제로 다루고 있다. 증산의 사상은 오늘날 한국의 신종교 교단의 중요한 축을 차지하는 것으로 그 발생배경에서는 이미 한국의 근대사회로부터 출발한 것이었다. 전통사회가 지닌 사회적 폐단과 모순을 직시하고 새로운 사회의 이념을 종교적 시각에서부터 규정한 증산의 사상은 오늘날 한국종교의 특징과 함께 인류의 보편적 가치관 확립에 기여하고자 한다. 아울러 전통에 대한 부정이 아닌, 바람직한 전통을 비판적으로 계승하고 나아가 인류평화와 도덕적 사회구현을 의도하고 있다.
본문에서 증산의 사상은 먼저 선천이라고 하는 인류의 이전 역사를 도덕적 타락으로 인한 진멸지경으로 바라보고, 이를 근본적으로 혁신하기 위한 방안으로 해원상생의 원리를 제시한다. 그의 천지공사는 이러한 해원상생의 이념을 실현하기 위해 행한 구천상제의 역사이었다. 증산이 강조한 후천의 도덕적 비젼은 그가 중시한 신도(神道)의 권위와 이를 수용하는 인간의 마음 간에 이루어지는 하나의 실천적 가르침이라고 할 수 있다. ‘인존(人尊)’의 이념은 이러한 신도가 체화(體化)된 인간의 모습을 이상적으로 말하는 것이다. 인존의 가치를 지닌 인간은 도덕적 완성을 위해 노력해야만 하는데, 그 궁극적인 경지에는 거짓됨이 없는 인간의 청정한 마음의 본질을 회복하는 것이 목적이 되고 있다. 오늘날의 신종교 종단은 이를 실천하고 구현하고자 노력하고 있다.

영어초록

The major purpose of this paper is to elucidate Kang Jeongsan's religious thought in terms of what he called "new religious spirituality and moral vision." Today his thought is considered a reflection of the indigenous religious movements in modern Korea since one of his main aims was to carry out a series of changes ―political, economic, social, and/or religious― in tandem with the large Korean nationalist movement which was also to modernize the decrepit and decadent state and society by removing all these evils that the old traditional Korea faced at the time.,
To remedy the ills of the traditional Korea, Kang Jeongsan proposed to establish the new mode of religious spirituality and moral vision for the forthcoming new world, into which he intended to introduce the universal value system for all men and women. However, this does not mean to refute or discredit the traditional value system whatsoever. Rather he intended to perpetuate some of the traditional values with constructive criticisms and analyses to buttress the new ones, thus realizing world peace for the benefits of all mankind.
In the body of this paper I elucidated Kang Jeongsan's "Prior World" (Seoncheon) in which people suffered a series of problems such as spiritual decay and moral degradation. According to Kang, the solution for these human problems lies in what he called "resolution of grievance for the beneficience of all life (Haewon sangsaeng)" Kang explained his task to resolve all the human problems in terms of " Reordering of the Universe" (Cheonji-Gongsa). But it is only possible for "the Lord of the Ninth Heaven," (Guchoen-sangje), or Kang, to implement or carry out this task for "the Later World" (Hoocheon), or the forthcoming new world. It is also necessary to enlist the aid of what he called "the Tao of the Divine" (Shindo) to teach men and women to embody the ideal of "Human the Majesty" (Injon), or their human dignity. By so doing he believed that people can restore and perfect the essential parts of their religious spirituality and moral values.
The ultimate purpose of Kang Jeongsan was to realize the above ideal through his new religious organization today for the benefits of all men and women throughout the world.
