프랑크푸르트학파의 비(非)하버마스적 비판이론: 현대사회연구에서 분석적 장점과 연구전략 (Non-Habermasist Critical Theory: Analytical Benefits and Strategy in Social Research)

초록

이 연구는 비판이론을 하버마스의 의사소통행위이론과는 다른 독립적인 이론으로 규정한 바탕 위에서 비판이론의 핵심특성이 현대사회를 분석하는 데 있어 갖는 강점을 탐색하고, 비판이론의 실제 사회연구사례들을 살펴봄으로써 오늘날에도 유의미한 구체적인 연구전략을 도출해보고자 했다. 비판이론은 유럽 시민사회의 자기파괴와 사회주의적 대안의 실패를 경험하면서도 과거와 단절된 새로운 인식을 추구하거나, 과거에 매달려 현실의 변화를 등한시하지 않았다. 대신 인간의 해방이라는 목표를 견지하면서, 현실에 대한 새로운 접근법을 통해 철학과 구체적 사회연구의 결합을 지향했다. 그 결과 비판이론은 주체/대상 변증법 속에서 구체적 시간개념에 의해 제한된 비초월적 진실개념을 갖게 되었으며, 특수 속에 보편이 재인식 가능하게 등장한다는 원칙을 세우게 되었다. 이러한 원칙은 현재의 사회 분석에서 여러 장점이 있다. 첫째, 비판이론은 시대적 전환기에 확립된 것으로서 급격한 변화 속에 놓인 현대사회 연구에서 분석적 장점을 갖는다. 둘째, 이론과 실천의 전통적인 결합방식에 얽매이지 않고 유연한 방식으로 더 나은 사회를 고민할 수 있게 한다. 셋째, 주체-대상에 대한 변증법적 인식은 기존의 서구식 이분법에 대한 훌륭한 대안을 제시해준다. 넷째, 보편이 특수한 대상 속에서 재인식 가능하다는 관점은 다양한 개별 사회연구들이 전체에 대한 인식을 놓치지 않도록 해준다. 독일 하노버에서 최근 행해진 일련의 비판이론적 사회연구는 비판이론이 갖는 이러한 장점들을 잘 보여주는 구체적인 사례로 주목할 만하다. 그곳에 모인 일군의 지식인들은 비판이론의 정체성에 대해 탐구하는 동시에 당대의 구체적인 현실분석을 통해 노동, 반유대주의, 민족주의, 정체성, 반미주의 등 새로운 비판이론의 연구영역을 개척하였다. 비판이론의 주요 가치를 계승하고 문제의식을 공유하면서 비판이론적 사회연구의 외연을 넓히려는 이 ‘핵심의 보존과 영역의 확장’이라는 이중의 연구전략은 우리가 비판이론의 현재적 적용을 고민할 때 진지하게 고려할 가치가 있다.

영어초록

This study aims to find out the strength of Critical Theory’s core features in analyzing modern society and its concrete research strategies that still resonate with us even to this day by examining the actual cases of social studies based on Critical Theory. Although Critical Theory had seen the self-destruction of European bourgeois civil society and the failure of the socialist alternative, it has not pursued a new perception that was severed from the past, nor has it ignored the change of present reality of “bourgeois civil society” lingering in the past. Instead, without compromising the objective of human emancipation, it has sought the combination of philosophy and concrete social research by attempts to develop new approaches towards reality. As a result, Critical Theory has got the concept of non-transcendental truth limited by the concept of concrete time within the subject- object-dialectics and, and has established the principle that the universal can be found in the specific. These characteristics have several advantages in the analysis of our current society. First, since Critical Theory has been established at the turn of an era, it has analytical merits in modern social studies, which is undergoing rapid changes. Second, we can think of a better society in a more flexible way, away from the traditional relation of theory and practice. Third, its dialectical perception of the subject and the object can be a good alternative to the existing dichotomic view of them. Finally, its perception that the universal should be recognized in the specific object makes the social research in various fields, without missing the recognition of the social entity. In this regard, it is necessary to pay attention to a trend of social studies from Critical Theory in Hannover, Germany. A group of scholars there tried to scratch out the misunderstandings of Critical Theory, while continued Specific reality analysis and pioneered new research fields of Critical Theory such as nationalism, labor, identity and anti-Americanism.
Their dual research strategy, so-called, ‘preserving the core and expanding the realm’ as an effort to broaden the scope of concrete research while inheriting the main values of Critical Theory will be helpful to make a current application of Critical Theory possible.
