초록

The goal of this paper is to introduce the life and academic works of Robert E. Buswell, Jr., who is currently a professor at the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures and the director of Center for Buddhist Studies in University of California at Los Angeles. Robert E. Buswell, Jr. is being introduced because he has been an eminent Buddhist scholar, having laid the groundwork for the study of Korean Buddhism in North America. He is widely regarded as the founder of the study of Korean Buddhism in North America because he has made significant contributions to the globalization of Korean Buddhism.
In this paper, three approaches are used to evaluate Buswell’s activities and academic achievements in relation to Korean Buddhism over the last 38 years. First, his life stories are recounted to show how he came across Korean Buddhism and became a Seon/Zen practitioner in Korea up to how he became a Buddhist scholar in the U.S. Second, the past and present of the study of Korean Buddhism in North America are illuminated, and from this approach, his roles in and contributions to the Korean Buddhist studies are eventually revealed. Third, among his academic works, the most significant works relating to Korean Buddhism are introduced to divide the three steps into periods. The first is the research on the eminent monks of Korean Buddhism, Jinul and Wonhyo, before the 1990s; the second is the research on the Buddhist practice tradition in Korea after the 1990s; and the third is the research on his fundamental viewpoint of the study of Korean Buddhism, which takes a look at the Korean Buddhist thoughts in the East Asian context. In particular, Buswell’s viewpoint of taking a look at the Korean Buddhist thoughts in the East Asian context provided a fresh standpoint to the Korean Buddhist scholars who take a look at the Korean Buddhist thoughts only in the Korean context. His perspective of viewing East Asian Buddhism as the dynamic bilateral relationship called “current and countcurrent” appropriately exposed the characteristics of mutual culturalism in Buddhism. As for the case of the identity of Korean Buddhism that he mentions in “imaging Korean Buddhism,” however, if he insists that the current-countcurrent is only for cultural universality and is not based on cultural particularity, it will highlight the contradiction that the countcurrent serves only the current and not itself.
