한국불교사 기술의 방법과 문법 (Historical View and its Subject in Describing the History of Korean Buddhism)

초록

인도에서 발생한 불교는 중국을 거쳐 한국에 전래(372)되었다. 고구려(372)와 백제(384)와 가야(452)의 왕실은 적극적으로 불교를 받아들였고 신라(527)는 전통신앙과 한바탕 결전을 치룬 뒤에 불교를 수용하였다. 결국 한국불교는 한국인들의 요청에 의해 수용되었고 한국인들의 능동적이고 주체적인 노력과 역할에 의해 한국사회에 깊이 뿌리를 내렸다. 그리하여 불교의 연기적 세계관은 우리들의 삶의 도리이자 질서이고 문화였으며 우리는 어떻게 살아야 하고 어떻게 발전해야 하며 어떻게 관계맺어야 하는지에 대해 가르쳐 주었다. 동시에 우리에게 철학하는 법과 사유하는 법을 제시해 주었다. 그런데 종래의 한국불교사 통사류는 사가들의 시대구분 방법과 역사서술 문법, 사관과 주체, 주제와 쟁점, 사건과 제도, 학통과 인물 등에 관한 깊은 인식 아래 기술되지 못하였다. 그 결과 한국불교사의 중층적이고 입체적인 시각들을 도외시한 채 학통(종파)과 인물(고승) 등의 생애와 사상 일변도로 기술해 왔다. 하지만 앞으로 이러한 몇몇 관점을 수용하여 한국불교사를 파악하게 된다면 한국불교사를 보다 입체적으로 기술할 수 있게 될 것이다. 이들 몇몇 관점 속에는 역사적 현실과 철학적 사태에 대한 사가들의 또렷한 시각이 내재되어 있기 때문이다.
그동안 한국불교사 기술에 대한 종합적 이해와 요청이 없다보니 사가들 역시 한국불교사 기술의 방법과 문제에 대해 깊이 고뇌하지 못했다. 때문에 한국불교사가 대중화되지 못했고 한국사에서 주류사학으로 자리매김 되지도 못했다. 그 결과 한국불교사 연구자의 숫자가 확보되지 못했고, 아직까지 온전한 한국불교사 통사류를 간행하지 못하고 있다. 이렇게 된 까닭은 아마도 불교사 연구 역사가 짧아 이러한 문제의식을 확보할 수 있는 계기를 마련하지 못했기 때문일 것이다. 우리는 문화의 세기인 21세기의 국제화 세계화시대에 살고 있다. 동서가 소통되고 남북이 융합하는 이 시대에는 무엇보다도 지식의 집적체로서 통사(通史)가 요청된다. 전문성과 대중성을 겸비한 한국불교 통사를 간행하기 위해서 한국불교사 기술의 방법과 문법에 대한 깊은 인식 아래 업설(業說) 또는 연기설(緣起說) 혹은 중도(中道) 사관의 확고한 정립과 사부대중의 주체 확립, 그리고 인간 이해와 세계 인식에 대한 본질적인 주제와 쟁점의 확보 등의 몇몇 문제들을 의식하면서 집필해 간다면 보다 입체적인 한국불교통사 기술도 먼 미래의 일은 아닐 것이다.
그리하여 한국불교사 기술에서 요청되는 방법과 문법들이 보다 깊이 환기되고 사관과 주체, 주제와 쟁점, 사건과 제도, 학통(종파)과 인물(고승) 등이 주요한 문제의식이 될 수 있다면 우리는 전문성과 대중성을 겸비한 한국불교사를 조만간 간행할 수 있을 것이다. 그러기 위해서는 고승의 행적과 사상에 대한 연구로 일관해 온 기존의 연구를 확장시켜 그들의 행적과 사상이 당시 사회 속에서 어떠한 역할을 담당해 왔는지에 대해서까지 다루어야 할 것이다. 또 새로운 한국불교사 기술에서 주의해야할 대목 역시 한국불교사의 주체를 출가자 중심이 아니라 사부대중 중심으로 확대해야 하며 그들이 활동했던 한국사회라는 공간까지 아우르며 기술해야 할 것이다. 한국불교사의 주체를 사부대중 중심으로 확대하기 위해서는 비구 이외에 비구니와 거사와 부인들을 발굴하고 그들의 존재감을 사료를 통해 복원하여 사부대중을 균형있게 기술하려는 노력을 기울여야만 할 것이다.
따라서 앞으로 간행해야할 한국불교사는 불교사 내부의 사관과 주체, 주제와 쟁점, 사건과 제도, 학통과 인물뿐만 아니라 한국사의 전 영역으로까지 확장하고 분석 검토하여 기술해야만 할 것이다. 그렇게 될 때 한국불교사가 한국사 전 지평으로 확산되고 한국사상사 전역으로 퍼져나가 한국불교사를 대중화시킬 수 있게 될 것이다. 그러기 위해서는 연구자들 사이의 보다 유기적인 협동체제가 요청되며 그러한 체제에 의해 대중성과 전문성을 겸비한 한국불교사의 간행 시일도 앞당길 수 있을 것이다. 종래의 한국불교사 통사류에 대한 검토와 분석 작업 역시 새로운 한국불교통사의 간행을 위해 전제되어야 할 주요한 업무의 하나라고 할 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

The history of Korean Buddhism is a part of Korean history focusing on Buddhism. Although Buddhism was accepted in Korea very long time ago, there is few historical publication thoroughly describing the 1,700 years of history of Korean Buddhism. I examined some of representative work such as Chosun Buddhism History Abstract by Sangroh Kwon, Chosun Buddhism Thorough History by Neunghwa Lee, History of Korean Buddhism co authored by Jeongsang Woo & Youngtae Kim, and History of Korean Buddhism by Youngtae Kim, etc.
Sangroh Kwon's Chosun Buddhism History Abstract is the first work on the history of Korean Buddhism written in both Korean and Chinese character. However, when describing the three-kingdom period, it was biased to the Shilla-centered perspective, and missed some important historical facts. This work is written in conservative style focused on describing facts while reserves the author's own evaluation.
Chosun Buddhism Thorough History by Neunghwa Lee is a type of Enlightenment history showing vast range of accumulated data via long period of preparation time. First, it expresses the nationalist perspective that was originated in the deep attachment to our culture. Second, it tries to express national autonomy by writing the year of the described country while locating the chinese year at the back. Third, it shows positivist perspective in terms of suggesting evidence and reference that originally documented the historical facts. Fourth, it accepts social Darwinism based on the nationalist perspective. Fifth, the author compiled the vast range of historical documents from the ancient time to the 2 year before the publication of itself, which shows its characteristic as a source book. Sixth, the author expresses his own opinion by adding 'Sanghyeonwal' on the important historical facts, and many of them tries to disseminate the superiority of our national culture in Enlightenment perspective. Seventh, it adopted a scientific description that tries to suggest causal relationship. Neunghwa Lee harmonized the scientific attitude toward history with its mystical components, as if he lets descendants evaluate it in their own way.
History of Korean Buddhism, coauthored by Jeongsam Woo and Youngtae Kim, dramatically escaped from the chronological form to the categorized historical writing. This book was written for the textbook used in University of Korean Buddhist Jogyejong, so the authors claimed and tried this book to be the standard of the history of Korean Buddhism. For this reason, they tried the categorization of periods, and mentioned each period's characteristics in Buddhism. Moreover, it is extended to Buddhist arts and music, described the institutional changes including policies or educational facilities, and also introduced the magazines and journals related to Buddhism.
History of Korean Buddhism written by Youngtae Kim is the result of what he tried for 28 years to develop the book of the same title which he coauthored with his teacher. The main characteristics of this book is that the author did not accept the conventional categorization of periods in historical studies, and tried to modify the names of chapters and sections in accordance with Buddhist understanding of history.
Each of four work I examined turned out to have its own pros and cons. However, the common weakness was that none of them clearly shows the author's understanding of their contemporary reality. I suggest that this represented the limitation from the sad history of our nation at the moment when these historical writings were published.
