여성적 숭고의 (불)가능성 ((Im)possibility of the Feminine Sublime)

초록

본 연구는 자크 라캉의 성적 차이(sexual differnce) 논의를 중심으로 ‘여성적 숭고’의 가능성을 탐구한다. 그럼으로써 이 다른 숭고가 페미니즘 미학 내에서 어떤 방식으로 재활성화 될 수 있을지 확인하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이 짧은 연구물로 여성적 숭고에 대한 실정적 논의는 어려울 수 있다. 다만 본 연구는 현재 페미니즘 미학에서 중단된 것으로 보이는 여성적 숭고 개념을 다시 소환해야 할 이유를 제시하고, 라캉의 성 및 성차 개념을 정교화한 저작물들을 검토하여 기존의 여성적 숭고 개념이 사실상 ‘남성적’임을 확인하면서, 또 다른 여성적 숭고의 가능성을 암시하는 것을 주요 내용으로 할 것이다.
전통 철학에서 숭고는 이른바 남성적인 미적 판단으로, 여성적인 미적 판단인 미감에 비해 우월한 감성일 뿐만 아니라, 그 자체 윤리적 함의를 갖는 ‘인간성’의 핵으로 자리매김한 바, 페미니스트들은 이런 숭고 미학 자체의 남성중심성을 비판해왔다. 그러나 다른 한편 6, 70년대 이후 동시대 페미니즘 예술가들은 고전적 미 개념과 불화하는 여성의 몸을 전면에 내세우면서, 몸과 정신의 이분법을 동요시키는 다양한 신체 예술과, 고전 예술에서는 허용되지 않는 저열한 감정들 (혐오, 욕지기 등)을 드러내는 예술들을 설명하기 위해 숭고 개념을 다시 소환했다. 그리고 이를 ‘여성적 숭고’로 명명하며 미학적 전통을 비틀거나 전유해왔다.
이런 여성적 숭고 개념은 정신분석의 팔루스로고스중심적 경향을 비판하면서도 정신분석 개념틀 안팎에서 여성적 신체를 탐구했던 여성 정신분석이론가들과 강하게 공명해왔다. 그러나 이러한 논의 이후 여성적 숭고 개념은 젠더 이론의 부상과 함께 거의 사라지고, 오늘날 성차에 관한 논의는 더 이상 유효하지 않은 것처럼 여겨진다. 그럼에도 불구하고 성차가 다양한 젠더들로 대체될 수 있는지에 대해서는 여전히 많은 의문이 존재한다. 특히 라캉주의 슬로베니아 학파와 동료들은 젠더 이론의 문제점을 지적하고 성차의 문제에 적극적으로 개입하면서 여성적인 것, 여성 주체의 미학적, 윤리적 가능성을 고찰하고 있다. 그 중 조운 콥젝(Joan Copjec)은 「성과 이성의 안락사(Sex and the Euthanasia of Reason)」에서 버틀러의 젠더 이론을 비판하고 라캉의 성구분을 칸트의 이율배반을 경유하여 독특하게 읽어내면서 정신분석적 관점에서의 여성적 윤리 제시하고 있다. 본 연구도 이런 맥락에서 콥젝의 논의를 정신분석의 성(sex)개념과 함께 검토하며 여성적 숭고의 가능성을 타진해본다.

영어초록

In this article, I explore the possibility of the feminine sublime, examining the formulae of sexuation in Lacan’s later work. By this examination, I suggest that this other feminine sublime can be (re)activated in contemporary feminist aesthetics. I present this sublime as negative. That is to say, I will not articulate its positive features. Rather, beginning with showing why we evoke this concept again, I will examine some literature on the sexual difference in Lacanian terms. In doing so, I will argue that the existing feminist exploitation of the sublime has, indeed, been masculine and imply another possibility of the feminine sublime.
In the modern discourse of aesthetics, sublimity is not only linked to the masculine, namely superior to the judgment of beauty as conceived as the feminine, but also is rooted in the kernel of humanity as the ethical. This is why feminist art theorists have criticized the concept of the sublime as male-dominated. Meanwhile, back in 70’s many feminist critics had speculated and appropriated the concept of sublimity, which led to the invention of other possible sublimity that can evoke not the idea of reason but bodily sensations such as disgust or uncanny, being called ‘feminine sublime.’ It is noteworthy that this existing ‘feminine sublime’ has strongly resonated with feminist psychoanalytic discourse as a general backdrop for understanding ‘female subjectivity,’ ‘female sexuality,’ ‘feminine eroticism,’ and so forth. However, since gender studies and social constructivist theories replaced ‘sex’ with ‘gender’, the debate on sexual difference also tends to be replaced with the debate on numerous gender identities and polymorphous perverse sexuality. Nevertheless, some doubt that sexual difference can be easily resolved or disappear. In particular, Lacanian psychoanalytic theorists have been problematizing some assumptions of gender studies and its elimination of sex, intervening in the ongoing discussion of sexual difference, and rethinking female subjectivity and its aesthetic-ethical possibility. Among them, in her “Sex and the Euthanasia of Reason”, Joan Copjec criticizes the gender theory that is elaborated by Judith Butler and reintroduces Lacanian sexual difference into feminist discourse by reading the formulae of sexuation with Kantian Antinomy in Critique of Pure Reason. In the same vein, I look through her argument with the psychoanalytic concept of sex and Kant’s mathematical sublime and consider a new possible sublime that might reside in female subjectivity.
