맹자 부동심(不動心)의 교육학적 연구: 지언과 양호연지기의 상호작용의 관점에서 (A Study on Mencius‘s Unmoved Mind(不動心) from the Perspective of Philosophy of Education)

초록

본 논문은 말, 마음 그리고 기의 상호작용으로 전개되는 부동심(不動心)의 공부방법인 지언(知言)과 양호연지기(養浩然之氣)에 대한 의미를 연구하여 이에 대한 교육적 가치를 탐색하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 맹자는 인간에게 고유하게 인의예지의 도덕적 기초가 갖추어져 있다는 성선의 인성론을 주장하면서 성선이 뻗어나갈 수 있는 가능성을 마음의 확장가능성과 긴밀하게 연결시킨 철학자이다. 맹자는 성선을 실현하는 주체로 마음을 선택하고 마음을 통한 공부에 전념했다. 부동심은 말과 기라는 인간의 현실적 조건을 마음과 함께 논의하고 있다는 점에서 맹자의 마음공부론 중 가장 실천적 역할을 부여받은 개념으로 생각할 수 있다. 맹자에게 지언은 ‘말을 하고 있는 그 마음을 안다’는 뜻으로 말은 마음의 표현으로서 마음의 상태를 알아차리는 중요한 기준이 된다. 지언은 말과 마음의 상호반영성을 강조하고 있다는 점에서 사적 차원에서는 내적 성찰 기능과 외적 변별 기능을 그리고 공적 차원에서는 사회적 표명 기능을 갖고 있다. 양호연지기는 맹자 공부론의 특색이 가장 강하게 드러난 공부방법이다. 맹자에게 양호연지기는 ‘도덕적 행위로 인해 축적되는 도덕적 기상을 기른다’는 뜻으로 자기수양의 도덕적 특성이 된다. 맹자는 당대에 주로 생물적 본능의 관점에서 해석되던 기(氣)를 양호연지기라는 개념을 통하여 도덕적 본성의 관점을 가진 가치론적 논의로 전환했다. 양호연지기는 기와 마음의 상호보완성을 강조하고 있다는 점에서 성선이 드러나는 단서인 사단(四端)을 확충할 수 있는 지속적 실천력의 확보라는 의미를 갖고 있다. 부동심은 지언을 통한 나와 세상이 소통하는 공부와 양호연지기를 통한 몸과 마음이 합일되는 공부를 기반으로 어떤 외재적 어려움과 곤란한 상황에 처할 때마다 자신의 판단에 따라 대처할 수 있는 안정적이면서 역동적인 마음의 경지를 말하는 것으로 이해할 수 있다. 이에 따라 부동심은 교육목적을 내재화한 교육목적-내용-방법의 연속성, 마음 적용의 현실적이고 일상적인 맥락에 있어서 지(志)의 형성과 확립, 지식의 내재화 그리고 도덕적 실천력을 확보하는 심신의 체현화라는 교육적 가치의 방향성과 가능성을 제시하고 있다.

영어초록

The purpose of this paper is to study the meanings of Understanding Words(知言) and Nourishing of Floodlike Vital Energy(養浩然之氣), a method of study of Unmoved mind(不動心) developed through the interaction of words, mind, and vital energy(氣), and to explore educational values of it. Mencius is a philosopher who closely connects the expandability of the mind with the possibility of the goodness of human nature, insisting that the human nature is inherently equipped with the moral foundation, benevolence, appropriateness, courtesy and wisdom(仁義禮智). Mencius chose the mind as the subject of the realization of goodness of human nature and dedicated to studying through the mind. Unmoved mind can be thought of as the concept given the most practical role of Mencius's theory of mind in that it discusses with words and vital energy as human real condition. For Mencius, Understanding Words means to know the mind that is speaking. Words are an expression of the mind and become an important criterion for recognizing the state of the mind. Understanding Words has the meaning of internal reflection and external discrimination on the private level and social expression on the public level in that he emphasizes the mutual reflection of words and minds. Nourishing of Floodlike Vital Energy is the study method where the characteristics of Mencius study were most strongly revealed. For Mencius, Nourishing of Floodlike Vital Energy means ‘to cultivate the moral vigor accumulated by moral behavior'. It is for Mencius a moral characteristic of self-discipline. Mencius converted vital energy, which was interpreted mainly from the point of view of biological instincts, to the valued discussion with a view of moral nature through the notion of Nourishing of Floodlike Vital Energy. In the point of emphasizing the complementarity between vital energy and the mind, it is meant to secure continuous practical ability to expand Four Sprouts(四端), a clue that reveals goodness of human nature. Unmoved mind is a stable and dynamic mind that can cope with one's own judgment whenever faced with any internal and external difficulties. Accordingly, Unmoved mind suggests the direction and possibility of educational value which is the continuity of educational purpose-content-method that internalizes educational purpose, internalization of knowledge, embodiment of mind and body to secure continuous moral practice, formation of Will(志) in practical ordinary context of mind application.
