태허 홍선의 현실 인식과 불입종 창종 (Taeheo Hongseon's Perception of Reality & Religious Foundation of Bulip Order(佛入宗))

초록

이 논문은 대한시대의 대일항쟁기와 대한민국기의 대표적인 실천가였던 태허 홍선(太虛泓宣, 1904 ~1979)의 현실 인식과 불입종 창종의 의미를 살펴본 글이다. 태허는 승속이 혼연일체가 되는 독자적인 종단을 개창한 ‘선구적 종교인’이었다. 동시에 법화사상과 법화삼매를 아우르는 ‘나모 삳달마 푼다리카 수드라’ 즉 대비주(大悲呪)로서 법화수행의 체계를 세운 ‘독자적 수행자’였다.
태허가 이러한 평가를 받는 이유는 그가 당시의 불교개혁론자들과 달리 그의 시대정신과 현실 인식은 머리와 가슴을 넘어 온몸으로 퍼져나가는 실천성을 지니고 있기 때문이다. 해방 이후 대한불교는 식민지불교의 오명을 벗고 민족종교로 탈바꿈하기 위한 기회가 있었다. 하지만 일제 치하의 기존 종단과 연루된 간부들과 새롭게 출범한 종단의 간부들 사이의 좌우익의 갈등으로 인해 종단은 하나의 방향으로 나아갈 수 없었다. 결국 불교계는 일제의 잔재를 청산하지도 못한 채 좌우의 이념논쟁에 붙들리어 대립하였고 과도한 친일청산에 붙들리어 갈등하면서 대사회적 존재감이 약화되고 말았다.
태허는 일본 유학을 통하여 한국불교의 전통강원에서는 중시하지 않았던 『법화경』을 새롭게 주목하였다. 그가 일본에서 탐독한 『법화경』을 자신의 소의경전이자 불입종의 소의경전으로 삼았던 것도 이 경전이 지닌 수행법과 방편문에 대한 확신에 의해서였다. 태허는 『법화경』의 진실에 입각한 다양한 방편사상을 현실에 적용하기 위해 노력하였고 그것은 『법화경』을 소의경전으로 한 불입종의 탄생으로 이어졌다. 태허는 ‘부처의 지견을 계발하고’, ‘실천 수행함으로써’, ‘자아완성을 추구하자는데 더 큰 서원을 세우고 있는 것’이라고 하였다. 그리고 그것은 ‘복될 일을 하려는 자세’와 ‘유기적인 새 생활운동을 전개함’으로써 스스로 오도하고, 스스로 각성하며, 스스로 증득하는 방향으로 나아가는 것이라 파악하였다.
태허는 종래의 승려 중심 종단에서 벗어나 승속이 일체가 되는 종도 대중의 종단인 불입종을 창종하였다. 그러면서도 출가자와 재가자의 역할과 책무를 분명히 함으로써 상호 존중의 종단으로 나아가려 하였다. 이러한 현실 인식은 ‘불자로서의 역할과 책무’를 통해 상호 존중의 풍토를 구현해 가는 현재의 대만불교의 모습과도 맞닿아 있다. 왜냐하면 현실에 뿌리를 두지 않고는 불교 개혁의 줄기와 가지를 뻗어갈 수 없기 때문이다. 따라서 ‘승속 일체의 대중 종단’의 창종과 ‘불자로서의 상호 역할과 상호 책무’라는 현실 인식은 한국불교가 나아가야 할 방향이라는 점에서 태허의 선구자적 안목을 보여준 것이라고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

This study looked the perception of Taeheo Hongseon(1904~1979), the most prominent activist in the transitional period between anti-Japanese struggle period in Daehan Era and period of Korea Republic, towards reality and examined the meaning inherent in the foundation of Bulip Order(佛入宗). Taeheo was a pioneering religionist who founded the independent religious denomination(group) where both clergy and laity became one. At the same time, Taeheo was an independent disciplinant who established the system of Lotus training as ‘Namo Saddharma Puņḍarīka Sūtra’(나모 삳달마 푼다리카 수드라) encompassing Lotus ideology, and Samādhi of Lotus, i.e., the Great Dharani(大悲呪).
Taeheo is given such accreditation because he showed zeitgeist(spirit of the times) and perception of reality with practicality spreading beyond his intelligence and passion and reverberate throughout his body to an extent that he is recognized as a reformer distinguished form Buddhism reformers during that period. After the nation’s liberation from Japanese colonial rule, Korean Buddhism had an opportunity to clear itself of the stigma of colony Buddhism and transform itself into national religion. However, the Buddhist religious body could not move forward in unity, torn by leftwing and rightwing conflict between the officials of existing religious body formed under Japanese colonial rule and officials of new religious body. Consequently, Buddhist community was engulfed in leftwing and rightwing ideological dispute without clearing away the remnants of Japanese colonialism, and lost the appeal in society while being stuck in conflict arising from excessive clearing the pro-Japanese groups.
Taeheo renewed his focus on Lotus Sūtra which had not been given importance in traditional monastic school of Korean Buddhism during his study in Japan. He had Lotus Sūtra which he read in Japan as his own main text of Buddhist School(所依經典) and main text providing basis for Buddhist School(所依經典) of Bulip Order(佛入宗) based on his confidence in the training techniques and how-questions contained in this scripture. Taeheo strived to apply various methodological ideology rooted in the truth of Lotus Sūtra to reality, and such endeavor led to the establishment of Bulip Order(佛入宗) adopting Lotus Sūtra as main text of Buddhist School(所依經典). Taeheo stated that even larger lecture hall(auditorium) could be established to pursue self-perfection through enlightenment and practical application of Buddha’s profound knowledge and insight. Taeheo indicated that such process was directed towards adopting the attitude willing to do things bringing good luck, misleading oneself through launch of systematic new everyday life movement, attaining self-realization, and reaching enlightenment independently.
Regarding the Bulip Order(佛入宗) which was founded newly, Taehe advocated public religious body built on religious principle that both clergy and laity became one, not religious body led by Buddhist monks. Meanwhile, he clarified the roles of clergy and laity in order to ensure that religious body is founded on mutual respect. Such perception of reality is consistent with current aspects of current Taiwanese Buddhism seeking to create a culture of mutual respect based on roles of Buddhists. That is because reform of Buddhism cannot be sustained or come to fruition without having its roots in reality. Thus, Taeheo can be said to have shown pioneering far-sightedness for the future course of Korean Buddhism, considering his perception of reality related to respect for mutual role and foundation of religion, a public religious body where both clergy and laity become one.
