초록

사회과학에서 구조와 행위자 관계 문제는 가장 중요하고도 난해한 쟁점이다. 일반적으로 현재 구조결정론이나 행위환원론의 양 극단은 비판받고 있다. 그럼에도 복잡한 사회현상을 설명하는 사회과학 이론들은 구조와 행위자 가운데 어느 하나를 우위에 두는 것이 효과적이다. 이론적 반인간주의나 방법론적 개체주의는 이 문제의 해결을 시도하지만, 여전히 편향성을 극복하지 못했다.
구조와 행위자 관계 문제는 사회과학 이론들을 넘어 인문과학 일반, 특히 철학적 세계관 및 인식론에 관계되는 문제이다. 즉, 세계관의 차이를 반영하는 문제라는 것이다. 뒤르켕과 스펜스의 사회실재론과 사회명목론 논쟁 이후 많은 사회과학자들이 이 문제의 해결을 위해 노력했으나, 여전히 완벽한 해결에 이르지는 못한 것으로 평가된다.
본고에서는 정치경제학의 신제도주의 이론들을 매개로 구조와 행위자 관계의 해결을 시도했다. 구조는 실체가 아닌 사회의 속성으로 행위자를 제약한다. 반면 행위자는 구조의 제약 속에서도 적절한 제도의 창출을 통해 구조의 유지와 발전을 가능하게 한다. 그러나 기존의 구조-제도-행위자의 삼분법은 구조의 유지와 발전을 설명할 수는 있지만, 행위자의 구조 변화 능력의 설명에는 한계가 있었다. 이에 본고에서는 제도주의에서 제도의 일부로 간주하는 사상을 구조의 변화 문제 해결을 위해 도입하였다. 특히 사상을 구조의 존폐와 관련되는 세계관적 사상과 구조의 유지와 발전에 관계하는 기능적 사상으로 구분하였다. 후자가 제도의 일부로서 사상이라면, 전자는 구조의 변화를 야기할 수 있는 행위자의 구조에 대한 가치평가를 포함한다. 본고에서는 구조를 실체가 아닌 속성으로 간주하고, 구조의 속성은 행위자들의 사상과 행동 속에서 드러나는 것으로 양자를 통일시키고, 기존 이론들이 봉착했던 악무한의 순환논리에서 벗어나기 위해 구조와 행위자의 매개체로 제도와 사상을 도입하는 구조-제도·사상-행위자의 삼분법을 제안한다.

영어초록

The relation between structure and agent is one of the most important and moot points in social science. In general, structure-determinism and agent-reductionism which are driven to extremes are criticized at present. However, giving to priority to structure or agent is effective in social science in order to explain complicated social situations. While theoretical anti-humanism and methodological individualism have been devised to solve this moot point, those can not overcome each inclination. Consequently, the issue on the relation between structure and agent is not elucidated.
The issue on the relation between structure and agent is related to not only social science but also the humanities, especially the philosophical view of the world and epistemology. In other words, it is reflected in the difference of view of the world. Since the debate on Durkheim’s Social Substantialism and Spencer’s Social Nominalism, many social scientists have tried to elucidate this point, but it is estimated that this point can not come to a satisfactory settlement.
This paper tries to settle the issue on the relation between structure and agent by the medium of new institutional theories of politcal economics. Structure is not a substance but a social property, and restrains agents. On the other hand, agent can preverse and develop structure by the way of creating suitable institutions under the restrictions of structure. Even though the previous ‘structure-institution-agent’ trilateral theory can explain the maintenance and development of structure, it has a limitation that is not able to elucidate the agent’s capacity to transform established structures. Hence, in order to explicat structural changes, the paper induces the category of idea which is regarded as an element of institution in institutionalism. Especially this paper divides idea into a world-view idea which is related to the maintence or abolition of structure and a functional idea that is connected with the preservation of structure. The latter is a idea as a constituent element of institution, the former contains agents’ value estimations about a structure that can bring about a structural change.
This paper regards a structure as not a sunstance but a social property, and unifes it with agents whose idea and behavior can exhibit a structural property. Also this paper proposes the ‘structural-institution·idea-agent’ trilateral theory that introduces institution and idea as the medium connected structure with agent, in order to be able to escaped from the vicious circulation that the existing theories to attempt unifing structure with agent has been encountered with. To elaborate this trilateral theory, it must be required not only more detail examinations on the conceptual definition about structure, institution, idea, agent but also more plentiful case studies. However this paper’s goal is limited to propose the possibility of materialization of the trilateral theory through the tentative theoretical composition.
