This study was carried out to assess whether the casts of the earthworm fed on the mixture of sewage sludge and oyster shell powder (hereafter, MSOP) can be used as soil improvement materials. We measured the concentrations and chemical forms of heavy metals, the cation exchange capacity (CEC) and the degree of mobility. The concentrations of heavy metals in the casts decreased when the mixture ratio increased. Also, the cation exchange capacity (CEC) of the casts significantly increased, suggesting that the casts can be used as soil improvement materials. Most heavy metals extracted by the SM&T method from the casts were existed as an oxidizable form, which occupied a high portion, but Pb and Fe were existed as a residual form. But the component ratios of the chemical forms in the sewage sludge were similar to those in the casts. The BAP proportions of the heavy metals in the casts were less than 30%, and the proportions decreased when the mixture ratio increased. Specially, the BAP proportions of Cr, Fe and Pb were very low (<&nbsp;2%), suggesting that bioavailability of these metals might be very low. Based on the mobility factors (Mf) of heavy metals, the degree of mobility (Md) of the heavy metals was calculated. The Md (avg. 8.7) in the sewage sludge was not very different from that (avg. 7.6) in the cast of the earthworm fed on the sludge only. But in the casts of the earthworm fed on the MSOP, the Mds were low with a mean of 3.3. This study suggests that the casts of the earthworm fed on the MSOP be used as soil improvement materials.
