공적분 검정을 통한 해상운송수요의 탄력성 추정 (The Estimation of Elasticity of Maritime Transport Demand Using Co-Integration Test)

초록

해상운송은 국가 간 수출입의 약 95% 이상을 담당하며 세계 물류의 핵심 역할을 수행하고 있다. 세계 해상물동량은 클락손(Clarksons)이 집계를 시작한 1987년 37억 1천만 톤에서 2016년 111억 2천만 톤까지 29년 간 연평균 약 4.0%씩 증가해 왔다. 기존 선행연구들은 이처럼 빠르게 증가한 세계 해상물동량의 원인을 세계 GDP 증가로 간주하고 있다. 물 론 세계 GDP가 해상물동량 증가에 미치는 영향력이 높은 것은 사실이다. 하지만 물동량 증가에 영향을 미치는 다른 중요한 설명변수들이 존재함에도 불구하고, 아직까지 세계 GDP 이외 다른 설명변수들이 세계 해상물동량 증감에 미치 는 영향을 분석한 연구는 거의 없는 상황이다. 따라서 최근의 해상물동량 추이와 기존 선행연구들의 성과를 감안한다 면 새로운 설명변수들을 대상으로 해상운송수요의 탄력성을 추정해 볼 필요가 있다. 본 연구는 이러한 문제의식 하에 세계 해상물동량에 영향을 미치는 주요 설명변수로서 벙커유 가격(bunker price), 클락손 해운종합지수(Clarksons Index), 세계 선복량(total world fleet)을 상정하여 해상운송수요 함수를 추정하고 각 설 명변수들의 영향력을 계측하였다. 벙커유 가격, 클락손 해운종합지수와 같은 운임지수 및 세계 선복량 변동은 해상물동 량의 증감에 있어 간과하기 어려운 중요한 요인이다. 주요 변수가 시계열 자료인 점을 고려하여 정확한 결과를 얻기 위 해 본 연구는 먼저 요한슨 검정(Johansen Test)을 실시하고 공적분 관계가 없다는 귀무가설의 기각 여부를 확인하였다. 즉, 요한슨 검정을 통해 시계열 데이터에 안정적인 장기 균형관계가 존재하는지를 검증하였다. 이후 공적분의 존재를 확인하고, 벡터오차수정모형(Vector Error Correction Model)으로 설명변수들의 계수를 추정하였다. 본 연구는 추정된 해상운송수요 함수 및 설명변수들의 탄력성을 통해 세계 해상물동량 증감에 유의미한 영향을 미치는 변수들을 확인하 고 해당 변수들의 영향력을 계량기법을 통해 분석했다는 데 의의가 있다.

영어초록

Maritime transport plays a key role in world logistics, accounting for more than 95% of international trade. World maritime transport volume has risen by an annual average of 4.0% over 29 years, from 3.71 billion tons in 1987 to 11.1 billion tons in 2017 since Clarksons, the worldʼs leading provider of shipping services, began counting that volume. Most of the previous literatures regard the increase of the world GDP as a main cause of this rapid growth of the world maritime transport volume. Undoubtedly, the world GDP has a greater influence on the growth of the world maritime transport volume, but there are other explanatory variables as important as the world GDP. Moreover, few studies have yet analyzed the impact of theses explanatory variables on the world maritime transport volume. Therefore, considering the recent maritime transport trends and the limitation of the previous literatures, it is necessary to estimate the elasticity of maritime transportation demand with new explanatory variables. To overcome these limitations, this study estimates elasticity of the maritime transport demand assuming the bunker price, Clarksons Index and total world fleet as the main explanatory variables affecting the world maritime transport volume, and measures the influence of each explanatory variables. The fluctuation of bunker price, freight rate and world fleet is important factors that can not be neglected in increase and decrease of the world maritime transport volume. Given that all variables are time series data, this study conducted the unit root test and analyzed the presence of unstable time series to get more accurate results. Based on unstable time series, we conducted the Johansen test to verify the presence of co-integration. After the Johansen test, the long-term maritime transport demand function was estimated with the Vector Error Correction model and the short-term maritime transport demand function was estimated with the error correction model. In short, this study identifies the variables that have a significant effect on the world maritime transport volume through the estimation on elasticity of the variables with the world maritime transport demand function.
