서계(西溪)의 『중용』 분장절(分章節)체계에 관한 연구 (A Study on Seogye(西溪)'s Division System of the Chapters and Sections(分章節) of 『Zhongyong』)

초록

본 연구는 서계의 『중용』 20장 분장(分章)체계를 바탕으로 『중용』 대지(大旨)의 분절(分節)에 대하여 알아보고, 그의 『중용』 분장절체계의 특징과 의의를 살펴보는 연구이다. 주요텍스트는 『사변록 중용(思辨錄 中庸)』과 『중용장구』이다. 서계는 『중용』을 중용의 도를 설명하고 그것을 실현하는 방법과 실현했을 때의 공효를 설명한 책으로 이해하고 20장으로 분장하였다. 본 연구는 서계가 『중용』을 5대절로 분절한 것으로 보고 있는데 이것은 『사변록 중용(思辨錄 中庸)』의 장하주를 근거로 한 것이다. 1대절은 1장(『장구』 1장)으로 『중용』 총론이며, 2대절은 2〜4장(『장구』 2〜11장)으로 중용의 뜻을 설명하였다. 3대절은 5〜9장(『장구』 12〜16장)으로 신독을 강조하여 실천의 중요성을 말하였고, 4대절은 10〜12장(『장구』 17〜20장)으로 여러 성인이 중용을 실천하여 중용의 덕이 지극함을 말하였다. 5대절은 13〜19장(『장구』 21〜32장)으로 중화위육의 공효를 설명한 부분이다.
서계의 『중용』 분장절체계에는 다음과 같은 특징이 있다. 먼저 『중용』의 편차를 수정하는 과정에서 주자학과의 차별화가 분명하게 드러나는 독창적인 체계이다. 또한 『중용』을 형이상학적 성리설로 해석하지 않고, 형이하학적 중용 실천론으로 해석하여 분장절체계에 이러한 특징을 반영하고 있다. 마지막으로 맥락간의 의미의 연결을 중시하여 분장(分章)하고 장과 장 사이의 맥락을 중시하여 『중용』을 전면적으로 재구성하였다.
서계는 『중용』의 분장과 분대절에 심혈을 기울였는데, 그의 분장절체계에 다음과 같은 의미를 부여할 수 있다. 첫째, 『중용』 전체를 해체하여 일관된 논리로 재정리하고 문맥이 연결되는 일관성 있는 분장과 분절체계를 보여줌으로써, 『중용』을 공부하는 학자들에게 구체적인 『중용』학습법의 예시를 제공하였다. 둘째, 실천에 중점을 두는 주석으로 장을 구성하고 대절을 구분함으로써 『중용』을 형이상학적인 이론서가 아니라, 중용지도를 일상에서 실천할 수 있는 실천서로 인식하게 하였다. 셋째, 주자학이 고무되어 있던 당시의 분위기에서 장을 새롭게 구성하고, 그에 맞는 주석을 가함으로써 한국 유학 사상사에 새로운 학문의 발전 가능성을 열어 주었다.

영어초록

This research aims at examining how Seogye divided(分節) the main ideas(大旨) of『Zhongyong』based on Seogye's 20-chapter 『Zhongyong』division(分章) system, and investigating the characteristics and meanings of Seogye's system to divide the chapters and sections of 『Zhongyong』. The main texts are 『Sabyeonrok Zhongyong(思辨錄 中庸)』and 『Zhongyong Zhangju』. Seogye understood『Zhongyong』 as a book explaining the ways of moderation, how to realize it, and the benefits of practicing it. In this research, based on the chapter footnotes of『Sabyeonrok Zhongyong(思辨錄 中庸)』, Seogye's 『Sabyeonrok Zhongyong』was divided into five sections. The first section is Chapter 1(Chapter 1 of『Zhangju』) and the introduction of『Zhongyong』, and the second section is from Chapter 2 to Chapter 4(Chapter 2 to Chapter 11 of『Zhangju』) explaining the meaning of moderation. The third section is from Chapter 5 to Chapter 9(Chapter 12 to Chapter 16 of 『Zhangju』) emphasizing self-regulation and the importance of practice, and the fourth section is from Chapter 10 to Chapter 12(Chapter 17 to Chapter 20 of『Zhangju』) talking about that many saints had practiced moderation so the virtue of moderation became extreme. The fifth section is from Chapter 13 to Chapter 19(Chapter 21 to Chapter 32 of『Zhangju)』) explaining the benefits of ‘Junghwawiyuk(everything in harmony)’. Seogye's 『Zhongyong』chapter division system has some characteristics that are not found in other scholars. First, in the process of correcting the deviations of『Zhongyong』, its differentiation from neo-Confucianism was clear so it can be said to have an original system. In addition, it interpreted 『Zhongyong』not as metaphysical neo-Confucianism but as a physical moderation practice theory, and reflected this feature in the chapter and section division system. Lastly, the connection between the meanings of different contexts was regarded as important, and『Zhongyong』 was restructured completely by dividing and connecting chapters. Seogye devoted himself to dividing the chapters and sections of『Zhongyong』, and the following meanings can be attached to his chapter division system. First, by dismantling the whole『Zhongyong』and then reorganizing it with coherent logic and showing a consistent chapter and section division system with connection to the contexts, he offered the scholars studying 『Zhongyong』 specific methods to study『Zhongyong』. Second, by organizing footnotes focusing on practice and dividing sections, he helped recognize 『Zhongyong』as a practical book to put the virtue of moderation into action in daily life rather than as a metaphysical and theoretical book. Third, he structured the chapters in a new way in the atmosphere of those times being inspired by neo-Confucianism, added proper footnotes, and therefore opened new potential of academic development in the history of Korean Confucian thoughts.
