남과 북 서로주체적 통합이 필요하다 (Reasons for Allelosubjective Integration between Two Koreas)

초록

이 글은 남한과 북한이 대등하게 만나는 서로주체적 통합의 필요성을 (1) 서로주체적일 필요성과 (2) 통합을 추구해야 할 필요성의 두 가지로 나누어서 논의한다. 먼저 남과 북이 서로주체적 관계를 수립할 필요가 있다. 홀로주체적 분리나 통합은 많은 문제점들이 있다. 특히 홀로주체적 분리는 심각한 ‘분단고통’을 낳고 있으며 홀로주체적 통합은 더 심각한 ‘통일고통’을 야기할 수 있다. 남과 북 사이에 홀로주체적 관계를 지양하고 서로주체적 관계를 수립해야 하는 이유다.
다음으로 서로주체적 관계 속에서 남과 북의 분리보다 통합을 지향해야 한다. 두 가지 이유가 특히 중요하다. 첫째, 남과 북의 평화를 더욱 공고하게 하기 위해서 서로주체적 분리보다 서로주체적 통합이 필요하다. 평화담론이 지향하는 서로주체적 분리 상태에서는 남과 북의 서로주체성이 충분치 못하고 평화가 안정적이지 못하다. 적극적 서로주체성과 평화를 구축하기 위해서 통합을 지향할 필요가 있다. 둘째, 우리의 온전한 주체성을 회복하고 행복하게 살기 위해서 서로주체적 통합을 지향할 필요가 있다. 우리는 주체 상실과 주체 분립의 역사를 가지고 있다. 남과 북의 통합은 반쪽짜리 주체를 정상화함으로써, 우리의 행복을 가로막고 있는 분단고통을 해소하는 과업이다. 서로주체적 관계 속에서 통합을 지향해야 할 이유다.

영어초록

I argue for allelosubjective integration between South and North Korea, based upon my categorization of four types of relations between us and non-us: monosubjective separation and integration, and allelosubjective separation and integration. Allelosubjective integration takes place in mutual directions between us and them who meet each other as equivalent partners, whereas monosubjective integration entails unilateral assimilation of others into us.
I present reasons for allelosubjective integration between South and North Korea in two steps. First, reasons for allelosubjective relations between the two Koreas. We need to seek allelosubjective separation or integration between South and North, because monosubjective separation or integration entails too many problems. In particular, monosubjective separation has already inflicted severe “pains of division” on the ordinary Korean people, and monosubjective integration will, I suspect, bring about what might be called “pains of reunification.” Hence the need for allelosubjective relationship between South and North Korea.
Second, reasons for allelosubjective integration, rather than separation, between the two Koreas. I emphasize two reasons. To begin with, we need to promote allelosubjective integration to consolidate peaceful relations between the two Koreas. Allelosubjective separation, which some progressive commentators prefer, is not likely to keep peaceful coexistence of two Koreas strong enough. We can build more stable peace system through allelosubjective integration instead of allelosubjective separation.
Next, we need allelosubjective integration in order to reestablish and normalize the defective subjectivity of Koreans which has been split into two “broken subjects” since the division of the Korean Peninsula and the War. Korea has suffered from a history of lost and broken subjectivity. By normalizing the two broken, divided subjects into one full, unimpaired subject, we may ultimately heal the pains of division.
