성서 희랍어 부정소에 대한 소고 (A Note on the Negatives in Biblical Greek)

초록

본고는 코이네(Koine)라고도 칭하는 성서 희랍어의 문법적 부정요소의 여러 행태를고찰하고 그러한 음운적, 형태적, 통사적 특징과 양상을 현대언어학의 여러 이론으로분석한다. 성서 희랍어에는 문장 부정소가 둘 있다. 해당 부정소가 나타나는 절의 시제가 한정형이냐 아니냐, 그리고 서법이 직설법이냐 아니냐에 따라 한정형 직설법 형태 οὐ(ou)와 그 외의 절에서 나타나는 μή(mē)로 상이하게 나타난다. 이중 οὐ는 단독어휘로 쓰이는지 여부와 뒤따르는 분절음의 종류에 따라 οὐ ~ οὐκ ~ οὐχ의 교체를 보인다. 본고는 먼저 이들 부정소의 음운형태적, 형태통사의미적 조건에 따른 다양한 행태를 고찰하고, 이에 대한 분산형태론(Distributed Morphology, Halle & Marantz 1993) 과 생성음운론(Generative Phonology, Chomsky & Halle 1986)의 분석을 제시한다. 분석을 통하여 한정형 직설법의 부정소 형태와 그 외 절의 부정소 형태 사이의 음운적관계를 포착함에 있어서 분산형태론적 분석이 어휘론(어휘주의 가설)적 분석보다 우월함을 보인다. 또한, 흔히 성서학 분야에서 편의상 상정하는 것과는 달리 부정소의한정형 직설법 형태의 기본형이 οὐ가 아닌 οὐκ임을 보인다. 아울러 한정형 직설법 부정소 형태의 음성형이 정해지는 영역은 음운어임을 보인다.

영어초록

This article studies various aspects of the two syntactic negators in Biblical Greek (i.e., New Testament Greek or Koine Greek) and provides Generative Grammar analyses of different kinds of allomorphy of these negators based on their phonological, morphological and syntactic behaviors. Biblical Greek has two syntactic negators depending on finiteness and mood of the verb in the give clause: οὐ (ou) found with a finite indicative verb form and μή (mē) with other verb forms. The finite indicative form οὐ further shows phonological variation depending on the independent use of the word and on the following segment. The οὐ (ou) form is used before a word beginning in a consonant other than [h] or when it is used as a separate word, οὐκ (ouk) is used before a word beginning in a smooth breathing, i.e., a vowel, and οὐχ (ouch) appears before a word with a rough breathing, i.e., [h]. The οὐ ~ οὐκ ~ οὐχ alternation is analyzed in the framework of Generative Phonology (Chomsky & Halle 1986). The current analysis identifies the form with the non-aspirated stop, rather than the form without consonant, as the basic form of the finite indicative negator, providing the two rules deriving the other forms: the consonant deletion rule for the consonant-less variant and the aspiration rule for the form with the final aspirated stop. It is also argued that the domain of application of these rules is the phonological word. The οὐ(κ) ~ μή variation is analyzed in the framework of Distributed Morphology (Halle & Marantz 1993). Geared with separation of phonological and non-phonological features in syntactic derivations and with late insertion of phonological features (i.e., vocabulary items), the proposed analysis provides more straightforward descriptions and explanations for the two negators. It is thus argued that Distributed Morphology is superior to lexicalism (Kiparsky 1982).
