의례적 기능과 목회적 돌봄의 관점으로 보는 기독교 장례예식의 구성 (Constructing the Christian Funeral Rite Focusing on Ritual Function and Pastoral Care)

초록

기독교는 역사적으로 장례의례와 친숙한 종교였다. 기독교가 막 태동할 무렵부터 박해를 받아왔고 박해의 결과는 성도들의 죽음으로 연결되었기 때문이다. 기독교 공동체는 신앙을 지키다가 죽음을 맞이했던 순교자들을 하나님의 곁으로 보내고 그들의 신앙을 기리는 의례를 거행했으며 지금까지 그 전통이 이어져 오고 있다. 그러나 비단 기독교 장례예식 뿐 아니라 타 종교와 일반 비종교적인 장례예식도 죽은 자를 살아 있는 사람이 살고 있는 현세에서 죽은 자들이 가는 곳으로 보내는 기능을 하고 있다. 물론 이 기능은 기독교가 아닌 다른 문화 전통의 장례에서도 존재한다. 이러한 기능은 의례가 갖는 기본적인 목적이고 존재의 이유이다. 그렇기에 본 논문은 의례 이론에서 기능-구조주의적 입장을 주장한 방 주네프와 터너의 이론을 통해 장례의례의 기능이 무엇이고 어떻게 기독교 장례의례에서 적용되는지를 고찰하였다.
어느 사회에서든 거행되어지는 대부분의 장례예식은 단지 죽은 이들을 이 세상에서 다른 세계로 보내는 기능만을 하지는 않는다. 장례예식은 그들의 죽음을 슬퍼하고 애통해하는 남아 있는 가족들, 친지들, 지인들을 위로하고 그들의 마음을 안정시키는 기능을 한다. 장례를 통해 유가족들이나 지인들은 그들이 사랑하는 이가 무사히 이 세상을 떠나 편하게 안식할 수 있는 장소로 갔음을 안도하며 그들과 보냈던 시간들을 회상하면서 서서히 그들의 죽음을 받아들게 된다. 그런 의례의 과정을 통해 죽은 이들과의 단절을 일상에서 인식하게 되고 더 이상 그들을 잃어버렸다는 슬픔을 극복하면서 본연히 자신의 일상으로 돌아오게 된다, 그렇기 때문에 장례예식은 가장 강력한 목회적 돌봄의 행위이다. 본 논문에서 필자는 현재 한국 개신교회의 기독교 장례예식이 목회적 돌봄의 차원에서 유가족과 참석한 친지와 지인들에게 위로와 치유의 기능이 부족하다는 면을 주장하였다. 또한 이를 극복하기 위해서 고인에 대한 기억과 내러티브 그리고 기독교적 소망이 함께 어우러진 애도 커뮤니타스를 이루어야 한다고 생각한다.
본 연구를 진행하면서 도달한 결론은 기독교 장례예식에서 목회적 돌봄의 중요한 이슈인 ‘죽은 이에 대한 애도와 유가족을 위한 위로’에 대해서 여러 학자들의 견해를 토대로 단절이 아닌 기억의 보존과 장례로 인해 새로운 관계를 위한 의미를 만드는 것이 효율적일 것이라는 것이다. 이러한 보존을 위해서는 의미-만들기 이론을 중심으로 하는 의례를 구성하는 것이 과제이다. 이를 위해서는 스토리텔링이 중심이 되는 장례 의례구성과 모든 이들이 참여하고 이들이 중심이 되는 애도 커뮤니타스를 형성할 수 있는 장례예식이 되어야 한다. 특히 애도 커뮤니타스를 형성시키는 데 가장 효율적인 방법 중 하나는 기독교 초기 역사부터 행해져 왔던 장례예식에서 성찬 예전을 거행하는 것이다. 장례예식에서 기독교 성찬예전을 거행하는 것은 시간과 공간의 초월하여 그리스도의 몸과 피를 나누면서 죽은 이와 살아 있는 이들이 서로 교통하는 신학적 의미가 부여되며 다 같이 참여하는 상징의례로서 애도 커뮤니타스를 형성할 수 있다.

영어초록

Historically, Christianity has been very familiar to the funeral rite. Christianity had been persecuted from very beginning period, and the result of the persecutions were connected to the death of the Christians. The early Christians had performed the funeral rite for the martyrs, who died to defend their faith in God, to commend their spirits to God as well as to commemorate their respectful lives. This funeral tradition has still lasted in Christian tradition, today. The funerals from the other religious traditions than the Christianity also have the function to send the spirit of the dead from this world where the living one exist to the posthumous world where the dead one sent. This function absolutely exists in every funeral rites in various traditions. This function is a basic purpose as well as the core of the funeral ritual. Therefore, in this paper, I researched what the functions of the funeral rite based on the functionalistic and structural theories of cultural studies especially focusing on thw works of Anold van Gennep and Victor Turner are, and how these theories are applied to the Christian funeral rites.
Sending the spirit of the dead to posthumous world is not the only function of every funeral rites but consoling the bereaved, such as the family, relatives, and friends of the dead who suffer from the death of their lovely one, and comforting their minds are also important things in the funeral. The bereaved and related people of the dead gradually receive the fact that their precious one is dead during the funeral rite in which they recall the times with the dead, and realize the dead one move from their community to the place where he or she rests in safe. Through this ritual process, they recognize the disconnection to the dead one in their lives, though, they are able to overcome their sorrow and suffering from the loss of the dead, and return to their daily lives. The funeral rite, therefore, is the most powerful action of the pastoral care.
In this research, I proposed that the funeral rites of the Korean Protestant church lack the function of consoling and healing for the bereaved family and related people of the dead in light of the area of pastoral care. To overcome this weak point, Korean Christian funeral should be the “mourning-communitas,” which merges the recalling the good narratives related to the dead person as well as the eschatological expectation of all participants. Researching this topic, I have reached a conviction that the constructing the effective new meaning-making process in Christian funeral, mourning to the dead and consoling the bereaved, which are very crucial issues of pastoral care area, should aim at continuing the memory of the dead, rather than severing from the dead. For this continuation of the memory, constructing the funeral rite based on meaning-making theory in which all people are available to participate in the funeral rite to shape the mourning-communitas. Especially, the most effective method to construct the mourning-communitas is performing Christian Eucharist in funeral rite, which has begun in early Christian funeral. Performing Eucharist in Christian funeral gives the crucial theological meanings that the communion with the living and the dead is possible when the participants eat and drink the body and blood of Christ, transcending the limitations of time and space. This theological event as a symbolic ritual also gives all the participants the feeling the mourning-communitas.
