해방기 국어 교재를 통해 본 국어와 정전의 형성 (The Formation of Korean and Canons through Korean Teaching Materials during the Liberation Period)

초록

해방 직후 국가 건설에서 선결되어야 할 것은 국어의 수립이었다. 국어가 가진 상징성이 형성, 전파되는 과정에서 조선어학회의 역할은 막중했다. 한국어와 한국적 상황에 대한 방비가 없이 주둔하게 된 미군정 및 미군정 학무국 담당자들은 조선어학회의 인사들을 준용하고 조선어학회 저작의 교과서를 채택하여 국가 안정화의 역할을 담당하도록 하였다.
국어, 교육, 교과서는 국민의 형성에 필수적인 것이어서, 해방 직후의 출판 시장은 국정 및 검인정 교과서, 부교재 형태의 출판이 활황을 이루었다. 이 글은 조선어학회 저작의 『중등국어교본』과, 교재류의 출판을 담당했던 여러 출판사들 중 조선어학회와의 관련성이 짙은 정음사 부독본총서를 살핌으로써, 해방기 국어와 국어 정전의 형성 과정을 살폈다. 국어의 형성뿐 아니라 국어 정전의 형성을 살필 수 있는 이유는, 그 당시의 대부분의 교재류가 식민지 시기의 작품들을 선별하여 묶은 형태를 띠고 있었기 때문이다.
1946년 간행된 정음사 부독본 시리즈는 총6권으로 구성되어 있는데, 1권 정인승의 『한글독본』, 2권 송시열의 『우암선생계녀서』, 3권 최영해의 『조선시조집』, 4권 김원표의 『조선속담집』, 5권 김병제의 『조선어철자편람』, 6권 박태원의 『중등문범』이다. 각 권 담당자들은 어떠한 형태로든 조선어학회와 관련을 맺고 있다. 거의 같은 시기에 출간된 국정 『중등국어교본』과 비교하였을 때 드러나는 해방기 독본의 공통점은, 식민지 시대에 유통되었던 작품들 위주로 구성되었다는 점, 그리고 이것이 국어의 성립과 나아가 국가의 성립을 뒷받침하는 기제를 작동시키고 있다는 점이다.
그 첫 번째가 청춘, 청년, 봄 등을 소재 및 주제로 하는 작품들이 양적으로 많은 비중을 차지하고 있다는 것이다. 이것들은 새 시대의 약동하는 힘과 의지, 비전을 제시하여 새 시대의 국민의 자세를 함양하도록 하였다. 두 번째는 계절을 비롯하여 날씨나 자연에 관한 구성 및 기술을 드러내고 있다. 이는 개별자로서의 경험보다는 추상적인 형태의 경험을 제시함으로써 새로운 생활과 기억의 재구성하려는 의도를 담고 있는 것이다. 세 번째는 국어 및 한글이라는 역사성 속에 교과서를 위치시키려는 의도를 드러낸다. 정음사 부독본총서의 공통점 중 하나가 한문학 기억에 대한 소거인데, 책의 말미에 수록되어 있는 표준어, 맞춤법 규정이나 작품의 본문에 제시된 (자주 틀리는 표기에 붙은) 방점 등이 이를 증명한다.
한글간소화파동을 전후로 하여 조선어학회의 영향력 쇠퇴가 드러나고, 정부 수립을 기점으로 강화된 반공 국시의 풍토는 다시 한 번 교과서 및 독본의 형태를 변화시키는데, 이에 대한 비교도 추후 이루어질 필요가 있다.

영어초록

One of the first decisions to be made in the process of nation building right after Liberation was the establishment of Korean. The Joseon Language Society had tremendous roles to play in the process of the symbolism of Korean being formed and spread. Being stationed in the nation with no preparations for Korean and Korean situations, the American military government and those in charge of the matters from its education and management bureau appointed the members of the society and adopted the textbooks written by the society so that they would play their roles in the stabilization of the nation.
As Korean, education, and textbooks were essential to the formation of people, the publication market of the nation right after Liberation was booming with the publication of government-designated, authorized, and auxiliary textbooks. This study examined the formation process of Korean and Korean canons during the Liberation period by looking into the Korean Textbook for Secondary School written by the Joseon Language Society and the supplementary reader series published by Jeongeumsa, which was closely related to the society among the several publishers responsible for textbook publication. The study was able to examine the formation of Korean canons as well as that of Korean because most of the textbooks those days were collections of selected works from the colonial period.
Published in 1946, the supplementary reader series of Jeongeumsa consisted of total six volumes including Volume 1 of Hangul Reader by Jeong In-seung, Volume 2 of Wooam Seonsaeng Gyenyeoseo by Song Shi-yeol, Volume 3 of Collection of Joseon Shijos by Choi Yeong-hae, Volume 4 of Collection of Joseon Proverbs by Kim Won-pyo, Volume 5 of Handbook of Joseon Spelling by Kim Byeong-je, and Volume 6 of Model Sentences for Secondary School by Park Tae-won. Those who were in charge of each of the volumes had relations with the Joseon Language Society in any forms. Compared with the government-designated Korean Textbook for Secondary School that was published almost at the same time, the reader from the Liberation period had common features with it including being organized mainly with the works in circulation during the colonial days and activating the mechanism supporting the formation of Korean and further the nation.
First, the works on the materials and topics of youth, young people, and spring held a high percentage in quantity. They proposed the lively power, determination and vision of the new era and helped to cultivate the attitude of people for the new era. Second, they revealed organization and description about weather and nature including the seasons, which reflects the intention to present experiences in abstract forms rather than individual experiences and reorganize them into a new life and memory. Finally, they exhibited the intention to place textbooks in the historicity of Korean and Hangul. One of the common features among the volumes of the supplementary reader series of Jeongeumsa was the elimination of memories of Chinese classics, which was demonstrated by the standard language and spelling rules at the end of each volume and the side dots(attached to the frequently miswritten marks) in the main body.
The forms of readers(textbooks) underwent another round of changes as the Korean Language Society lost its influence around the Hangul simplification shock with the anti-communist climate reinforced by the establishment of government, which raises a need to compare them in future study.
