누스바움의 감정철학으로 본 윤동주의 ‘시적 정의(正義)’ (‘Poetic Justice’ of Yun Dong-ju from the Viewpoint of Nussbaum's Philosophy of Feelings)

초록

본고는 연민의 감정을 중심으로 윤동주 시세계의 지향점 및 특성을 파악하려는 시도이다. ‘수치심→자기 연민→공적 연민’으로 나타나는 감정 회로는 윤동주 시가 연민의 시학을 토대로 구축돼 있음을 드러낸다. 공적 연민은 ‘시적 정의(正義)’를 실천하는 핵심 기제이며, 시적 정의(正義)는 윤동주 시의 지향점이자 저항의 구체적 방식으로 나타난다.
윤동주 시에서 수치심은 공적 연민의 실천과 괴리된 자신을 검열하여 스스로 낙인찍은 데 따른 감정이다. 낙인은 수치심 처벌을 의미하는데, 시적 재판관의 면모를 보이는 윤동주는 낙인찍힌 자아를 우물이나 무덤 속에 유기하거나 감금하는 방식으로 징벌을 내린다. 윤동주의 수치심이 특별한 이유는 그것이 죄의식에 침잠하는 감정이 아니라, 시인으로 하여금 자기 연민을 거쳐 공적 연민을 지향하게 하는 원초적 감정으로 작용한다는 데 있다.
윤동주가 수치심 속에서 깨달은 ‘상실’은 결핍된 자아를 야기함으로써 자기 연민을 유도하고 있다. 특히 윤동주 시에 자주 등장하는 ‘눈물짓다’, ‘슬픔’ 등은 소중한 것을 잃었다는 자각, 그 상실의 고통에 대한 시적 반응이자 자기 연민의 시적 기제이다. 윤동주는 상실의 심연에 빠져들기보다는 스스로에게 손을 내밀어 눈물과 위안을 요청하는 방식으로 현실을 넘어서고자 하였다. 결핍된 자아를 연민으로 감싸 안을 때라야 ‘나/타인’의 경계를 넘어서서 공적 연민을 지향할 수 있었던 것이다. 요컨대 윤동주의 자기 연민이란 상실의 고통 속에서 결핍된 자신을 포용하는 방식이자 파편화된 민족을 복원하는 동력이라 할 수 있다.
윤동주는 빛의 상상력으로 공적 연민을 형상화함으로써 시적 재판관의 면모를 유감없이 보여주었다. 일본의 폭압에 비통한 현실을 살아가는 우리 민족을 연민하고, 그들을 빛으로 하나하나 비추어 어둠의 구렁에서 구해내려 했던 것이다. 이처럼 빛을 소환하여 훼손된 시대를 조율하려는 노력은 시적 재판관의 입장에서 시인 윤동주가 취하는 시적 정의(正義)로 나타난다. 민족의 고통에 귀 기울이고 빛을 끌어들여 어둠의 시대를 조율하는 방식은 누스바움이 강조한 연민 윤리, 다시 말해 시적 재판관의 역할 및 시적 정의(正義)와 맞물리는 지점이다.
빛의 상징을 통한 공적 연민과 시대 조율은 다른 시인들에게서는 찾기 힘든 윤동주 특유의 시적 정의(正義)의 실천 방식이다. 이러한 점에서 윤동주는 누스바움이 역설한 “재판관으로서의 시인”의 자질을 가장 모범적인 시텍스트로 입증한 시인이라 해도 과언이 아니다. 소외되고 고통받는 자들을 세세히 들여다보고 그들의 훼손된 삶을 바로잡아 온전한 것으로 복원하려는 노력은 곧 시적 정의(正義)의 실천이 아닐 수 없다. 따라서 공적 연민을 통한 시적 정의(正義)는 윤동주 시의 저항성을 드러내는 징표이면서, 연민을 근간으로 하는 시적 지향점이다. 연민의 시학으로 추구되는 시적 정의(正義), 이것이야말로 자아성찰이나 종교적 관점으로는 충분히 설명하기 어려운, 윤동주 시세계의 특수성이라 할 수 있다.

영어초록

This study tries to grasp the orientation and characteristics of the poetic world of Yun Dong-ju focusing on feelings of pity. An emotional circuit shown in order of ‘shame → self-pity → public pity’ reveals that Yun Dong-ju's poems are built based on poetics of pity. Public pity is the key mechanism to practice ‘poetic justice.’ And poetic justice appears as the orientation and detailed method of resistance in Yun Dong-ju's poems.
In Yun Dong-ju's poems, shame is a feeling of stigmatizing oneself by censoring the practice of public pity and distancing oneself. The stigmatization means the shameful punishment of Yun Dong-ju who shows how a poetic judge punishes his stigmatized self by making his way to a desert or keeping himself in a well or a grave. Yun Dong-ju's shame is special because it works as the instinctive feeling which makes the poet allowing in self-pity a major aim for a more public pity.
'Loss' that Yun Dong-ju realized in shame leads to self-pity by causing a deficient ego. Especially, 'shedding tears' and 'sorrow' which often appear in Yun Dong-ju's poems are the self-awareness that he lost precious things, the poetic responses to pain of his loss, and the poetic mechanism of self-pity. Yun Dong-ju tried to get over the reality in a way, by holding his hand to himself and requesting tears and comfort rather than sinking into the abyss of loss. He could perceive at the public pity beyond the boundary between 'himself and others' when he embraced the deficient ego with pity. In short, Yun Dong-ju's self-pity means his way of embracing his deficient ego in the pain of loss and power to restore the fragmented people.
Yun Dong-ju showed an aspect of a poetic judge by embodying the public pity with the imagination of light. He tried to sympathize with our people who lived with the sorrowful reality under the Japanese oppression and to rescue them from the abyss of darkness by shining them all with a light. Poet Yun Dong-ju's effort to tune the damaged age by bringing light to them is shown as a poetic justice where he takes the position as a poetic judge. The way to listen to the pain of the people and tune the age of darkness is by bringing in the light, which is the point that meshes with the compassionate ethics that Nussbaum emphasized, in other words, the role of the poetic judge and justice.
Public pity and the age tuning through a symbol of the light are the way to practice Yun Dong-ju's unique poetic justice which is difficult to be found from other poets. In this sense, it is no exaggeration to say that Yun Dong-ju is the poet who proved the qualities of 'a poet as a judge' emphasized by Nussbaum with the most exemplary poetic texts. His effort to take a close look at those who are under-privileged and have suffered but now have their damaged lives fully restored to them is the practice of poetic justice. Therefore, poetic justice through the public pity is the token which reveals resistance of Yun Dong-ju's poems and the poetic orientation based on pity. Poetic justice pursued by poetics of pity is the distinct characteristics of Yun Dong-ju's poetic world which is difficult to explain enough exhaustively from the self-reflection or the religious perspective.
