영역과 정의의 관점에서 보는 번뇌의 심리학 (Psychology of Defilement focused on Domain and Definition)

초록

괴로움의 소멸을 목표로 하는 불교에서 괴로움의 원인이 되는 번뇌에 대한 고찰은 핵심적이라고 할 수 있다. 본고는 먼저 서구심리학적 관점에서 번뇌의 영역은 인지, 정서, 동기, 성격의 영역이라는 것을 밝히고자 한다. 네 가지 영역 각각의 정의는 상호보완적인 정의형태를 가지고 있고, 각각에 대해서 다양한 분류가 가능하지만 기본, 복합의 분류가 토대가 된다고 할 수 있다. 불교심소학적 관점에서 보면 촉작의수상사(觸作意受想思)라는 기본적인 심소에서 네 영역이 상호보완적인 정의형태를 가지고, 복합적인 심소는 유익과 유해로 나눌 수 있고, 그 가운데 유해한 인지, 정서, 동기, 성격의 영역을 번뇌의 영역이라고 할 수 있다. 번뇌의 영역을 다루는 번뇌의 심리학과 유익한 영역을 다루는 청정의 심리학이 가능하다.
번뇌를 본래적 정의와 포괄적 정의의 관점에서 볼 수 있다. 본래적 정의에서 번뇌는 ‘비여리작의(非如理作意)로 인한 괴롭힘’으로 정의할 수 있고, 번뇌를 부르는 다양한 이름에서 번뇌의 특징을 볼 수 있다. 번뇌는 끈적끈적하고 더럽히고, 조용히 베거나 폭포수처럼 흘러넘치는 특징을 동시에 가지고 있고, 멍에처럼, 매듭처럼, 족쇄처럼 묶어 놓고, 집착하게 하고, 덮고 가린다. 그리고 이 번뇌는 감각기관에서 아상을 통해서 발생하고, 비여리작의에 의해서 유지되고, 유익한 법으로부터 점점 멀어지고, 수번뇌를 파생시키고, 윤회로까지 확장되는 기능을 가진다.
번뇌의 포괄적 정의에서 번뇌는 근본번뇌 6가지와 수번뇌 20가지로 분류할 수 있다. 육근의 감각기능에 대한 비여리적 마음씀에 의해서 번뇌는 발생한다. 근본번뇌는 나와 나의 활동에서 볼 수 있고, 수번뇌는 근본번뇌에서 파생된 번뇌로 전형적인 형태를 가지고, 견혹·수혹이라는 번뇌의 예둔으로 구분할 수 있다.

영어초록

In Buddhism aiming at the annihilation of suffering, consideration of the cause of suffering is the core. This paper intends to reveal that the domain of defilement is the domain of cognition, emotion, motivation, and personality from a western psychological point of view. The definition of each of the four domains has a complementary definition, and it can be said that various classification is possible for each, but the basic and complex classification is the foundation. From a Buddhist psychological point of view, it proves that the four domains have complementary forms of definition in the basic mental factors group of contact, attention, sensation, perception, and volition. The compound mental factors can be divided into the benefits and the harms, and the area of ​​harmful cognition, emotion, motivation, and personality is the area of ​​defilement. Therefore psychology of defilement and psychology of purification are possible.
In the essential definition of defilement, defilement can be defined as "harassment caused by inappropriate attention," and the characteristics of defilement can be seen in various names which call defilement. The defilement is sticky, dirty, silent flowing or overflowing, like a yoke, like a knot, tied like a shackle, clinging, hindered and covered. And this defilement occurs through the concept of ego in the sensory organs, is maintained by inappropriate attention, is gradually distanced from the benefits, derives the secondary defilement, and extends to the reincarnation.
In the inclusive definition of defilement, defilement can be classified into six basic defilements and twenty secondary defilements. The basic defilement can be seen by me and my activity, and the secondary defilement is a typical form of defilement derived from the basic defilement, and it can be distinguished into the delusion of reason and conceptual delusion in terms of keenness and bluntness.
