지명으로 보는 세책과 방각의 유통 양상 (Study on the Distribution Patterns of Lending library and Woodblock Printing Shops Based on Place Names)

초록

본 연구는 세책과 경판 방각의 간소 지명을 중심으로 통계적으로 분석하고 이를 문화지도로 작성함으로써 조선 후기 소설의 유통 양상을 고찰하는 데에 목적을 두었다. 기본 자료로 간기를 토대로 간소를 정리하고 세책가의 지명 39개, 방각소의 지명 26개를 대상으로 하여 위치를 비정하였다. 기존에 확정된 지명과 현재 위치 외에 세책가는 금호와 유호, 파곡 등의 위치를 수정 혹은 새롭게 비정하였고 방각소는 용동, 화곡, 화산 등의 위치를 확인하였다. 이렇게 논의한 지명을 자료로 하여 세책가와 방각소 각각의 분포를 통계적으로 분석하고 지도로 작성하였다. 그 결과 세책가는 동북쪽과 남산 아래를 제외한 모든 지역 특히, 성외 지역에도 고르게 분포하고 있으며 대부분 상품 유통의 중심지이거나 종로 시전과 가까운 지역에 위치하였다. 또한, 일반적으로 세책가와 가까운 주소지에서 대출하는 경향이 있으나 거리가 있는 곳에서도 대출하는 것을 알 수 있다. 방각소의 경우 전체 방각소 52.6%가 남부에 집중되어 있으며 남부에서도 절반 이상이 광통방에 속한 지명이다. 서부에서는 반석방에 집중되어 있으며 방각소의 대부분이 성 안에 위치하는데 방각소의 분포에서 주목할 만한 것은 조선후기에 인구가 증가한 대표적인 지역이면서 상업지역인 중부에 방각소가 없다는 점이다. 시대에 따라 방각소가 중심부로 이동하기는 하나 방각소의 입지는 공통적으로 시장을 중심으로 형성되는 양상을 보인다. 세책가와 소설 방각소의 지명을 비율로 살펴보면 세책가는 서부, 남부, 중부가 비슷한 비율로 나타나는 등 5개의 행정구역에서 고르게 분포하고 있음을 볼 수 있다. 이에 비해 소설 방각소는 절반 이상이 남부이며 중부와 북부에는 소설을 출판한 방각소가 없는 것으로 파악되었다. 세책가와 소설 방각소를 지도 위에 표시함으로써 소설 유통의 지리적 양상을 파악하였는데 그 결과 조선 후기 소설 유통은 세책가가 있던 향목동과 방각소가 있던 미동과 유동이 인접한 현재 을지로1가 인근에서 가장 성행하였음을 알 수 있다.

This study focuses on the place of Publication names of lending library and woodblock printing shops in the context of statistical analysis and cultural mapping, aiming to examine the distribution patterns of novels in the late Joseon period. Using foundational data from historical records, the study organized and compared the locations of 39 lending library and 26 woodblock printing shops. In addition to confirming existing names and locations, adjustments were made forLending library such as Geumho, Yuho, and Pagok, while woodblock printing shop locations in Yongdong, Hwagok, and Hwasan were verified.
Based on the discussed place names, the distribution ofLending library and woodblock printing shops was statistically analyzed and visualized on a map. The results indicate thatLending library are uniformly distributed across all areas except the northeast and below Namsan, particularly concentrated in areas outside Seoul and close to Jongno, suggesting they were often located at the center of commercial activity. Moreover, it was observed that there is a tendency to borrow books fromLending library located nearby, but loans are also made from distant locations.
As for woodblock printing shops, 52.6% of them are concentrated in the southern region, with over half in the Gwangtongbang area. In the western region, there is a concentration in the Banseokbang area, and most woodblock printing shops are located within city walls. Notably, in the central commercial area where the population increased significantly during the late Joseon period, there is an absence of woodblock printing shops. Although woodblock printing shops tended to move towards the central areas over time, their locations consistently formed around market centers.
Examining the distribution ofLending library and novel woodblock printing shops in terms of proportions,Lending library are evenly distributed across the western, southern, and central regions. In contrast, more than half of novel woodblock printing shops are in the southern region, with none in the central and northern regions.
By mapping the locations of Lending library and novel woodblock printing shops, it was revealed that the distribution of novel circulation during the late Joseon period was most prominent in the vicinity of Euljiro 1-ga, where there were Lending library and woodblock printing shops in Hyangmok-dong and Midong, adjacent to each other.
