탐진치 관점에서 보는 불교의 성격발달 (Buddhist Personality Development from the Perspective of Craving, Hatred, and Ignorance.)

초록

본고는 두 가지를 밝히고자 한다. 첫째 불교의 성격유형은 탐진치의 구성비율로 볼 수있다. 성격은 오온 전체를 다루므로 몸과 인지, 정서, 동기 또는 행동이 성격의 구성요소가 된다. 탐진치의 비율에 따라서 몸과 인지, 정서, 동기 또는 행동이라는 성격의 구성요소의 비율이 달라지게 된다. 탐은 감각기관의 욕망, 아(我)와 관련된 욕망, 아소(我所) 와 관련된 욕망의 셋으로 볼 수 있고, 진은 분노에서 두려움까지, 기쁨에서 슬픔까지의두 축으로 볼 수 있고, 치는 사고의 태도의 차원에서 실체적 사고, 이분법적 사고, 희론적 사고와 같은 실체(實體) 중심의 사고방식과 당위적 사고, 나중심적 사고, 냉소적 사고, 허무적 사고와 같은 집(執) 중심의 사고방식으로 볼 수 있다. 탐은 축적, 진은 반응, 치는사고로 볼 수 있다. 불교의 성격유형은 크게는 탐중심, 진중심, 치중심의 성격이 있을수 있고, 세부적으로는 18가지 성격유형이 가능하다.
둘째 불교의 성격발달은 탐진치의 약화, 소멸과 연관해서 볼 수 있다. 불교의 성격발달은 중층적이고, 복합적이고, 비단선적이고, 조건적이고, 특이점을 가진다는 특징을 가진다. 성격으로 번역되는 퍼서널리티(personality)의 퍼슨(person)은 범부를 말하며, 성격은범부의 기능의 총체라고 할 수 있다. 범부의 성격이 탐진치의 유형화된 패턴이라고 한다면, 성인의 성격은 이러한 탐진치의 유형화된 패턴을 제거하는 형태 또는 이러한 유형화된 패턴으로부터 자유롭게 되는 것이 된다. 범부의 성격을 ‘인간의 몸과 마음과 환경의 영향 하에서 인지, 정서, 행동으로 대표되는 인간의 기능을 일관되고 고유하게 유형화되고 조직화된 형태로 만드는 역동적이고 복합적이고 내적인 기능’이라고 정의할수 있는 반면, 성인의 성격은 ‘인간의 몸과 마음과 환경의 영향하에서 불교적 목표와 연관해서 전체적으로 잘 기능하는 것’이라고 할 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

This paper seeks to clarify two things. First, the Buddhist personality type can be seen as the composition ratio of Craving, Hatred, and Ignorance.
Personality deals with all five aggregates, so body, cognition, emotion, motivation, or behavior become components of personality. Depending on the ratio of Craving, Hatred, and Ignorance, the ratio of personality components such as body, cognition, emotion, motivation, or behavior changes. Craving can be seen as three things: craving of the sense organs, craving related to self, and craving related to mine. Hatred can be seen as two axes from fury to fear and from joy to sadness. In terms of attitude of thinking, Ignorance is divided into substance-centered thinking styles such as substantive thinking, dichotomous thinking, and proliferative thinking, and adherence-centered thinking styles such as ought thinking, self-centered thinking, cynical thinking, and nihilistic thinking. Broadly speaking, there can be personality types such as Craving-centered, Hatred-centered, and Ignorance-centered, and in detail, there are 18 personality types.
Second, the Buddhist personality development can be seen in relation to the weakening and disappearance of Craving, Hatred, and Ignorance. Buddhist personality development is characterized as multi-layered, complex, non-linear, conditional, and singular pointed. Person in personality refers to an ordinary person, and personality can be said to be the totality of the functions of an ordinary person. If the personality of an ordinary person is a typified pattern of Craving, Hatred, and Ignorance, the personality of a saint is a form of eliminating this typified pattern of Craving, Hatred, and Ignorance or becoming free from this typified pattern. On the other hand, the personality of ordinary people is defined as ‘a dynamic, complex, and internal function that forms human functions represented by cognition, emotion, and behavior into a consistent and uniquely patterned and organized form under the influence of the human body, mind, and environment’, the personality of a saint can be said to be ‘functioning well overall in relation to Buddhist goals under the influence of the human body, mind, and environment."
