『常變通攷』를 통해 본 제례 연구 (A Study on Ancestral Ritual Formalities through 『sangbyeontongko』)

초록

본 연구는 조선후기 영남지역 학자인 동암 柳長源이 저술한 대표적인 예서인 『常變通攷』(1783)를 통하여 문헌의 성립과정과 구성, 祭禮의 내용을 고찰하여 그에 내재된 특징을 규명함으로써 제례문화의 의미를 조명하고자 하였다.
『常變通攷』 제례내용의 특징을 살펴보면 다음과 같다.
첫째, 사당은 정성과 공경의 마음으로 제례에 임하는 제구, 제기, 의복, 선조들이 남긴 유물 등의 준비물들을 보관하고 제찬을 받들어 조상을 뵙는 장소였다. 둘째, 제사를 모시기전 몸과 마음을 바르게 가짐으로 제례에 대한 지극한 정성의 준비로 재계해야 함을 강조하였다. 셋째, 제구는 제사를 지내기전 깨끗이 씻어 두어야 함은 물론 다른 용도로는 쓰지 말 것을 언급하였다. 넷째, 제복에 있어 류장원은 색은 명시하지 않고 絹紗를 입을 것을 권하였다. 다섯째, 제수는 생활의 형편에 따라서 알맞은 제물을 갖추어 올리는 것이 진정 정성스러운 제사가 될 수 있음을 시사하고 있다. 여섯째, 절차에 있어 봉주 출취, 참신, 강신, 진찬, 초헌, 아헌, 종헌, 유식, 합문, 계문, 사신, 납주, 철의 과정으로 진행됨을 알 수 있었다.
제사는 우리 민족이 오래 동안 지켜 내려온 禮俗으로 특징적인 문화유산이며 정성과 가치관이 내포된 전통문화이다. 그러므로 제례의 보존과 계승은 우리가 이어받은 소중한 정신을 후손들에게 전해주는 것이다. 제례가 지닌 사회적 기능과 의미는 시초를 되돌아보게 하며 조상을 공경함으로써 윗사람을 존중하게 된다. 이리하여 현대 가정의 생활 철학적 측면에서 질서의식 부재와 물질만능의 현대인에게 새로운 의미를 부여한다. 오늘날의 제례는 고례의 형식에 집착하기보다는 현대의 시의성에 대한 적극적인 관심과 이해가 필요하다. 특히 사회변화에 따른 의례의 현대화와 대중화를 위해서는 전통제례의 원형에 대한 심도 깊은 연구가 병행되어야 할 것이다. 우리나라의 제례문화가 전통과 현대의 적절한 조화로 미풍양속을 보존할 때 21세기 세계화에 독자성과 자립성을 유지하며 계승될 수 있음을 인식해야 할 것이다. 전통은 만들어지는 것이 아니라 만들어 나가는 것이므로 과거의 훌륭한 문화유산을 오늘의 현실에 맞도록 재정립하는 것이 바람직하다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to examine the content of traditional ceremony from early conditions to its establishment and composition of 'Sangbyeontongko'(1783), a representative book on a study of decorum which is written by a confucian Ryu, Jang-Won. This will lead to identify inherent features of ceremony and to illuminate the meaning of ritual culture.
According to 'Sangbyeontongko', characteristics of ceremonial ritual are shown as follows.
First, the shrine is where keep the ritual utensils, tools, clothing, and other artifacts left by ancestors and used for religious services. This place is also where ancestors are honored by ritual devotion with sincerity and respect. Second, the preparation progress is emphasized before ceremony. Participants should polish their mind and body for the utmost devotion. Third, the book mentions that the ritual utensils are cleansed before any ritual schedules, and not be used for any other purpose of use. Fourth, about uniform, Ryu, Jang-Won does not specify the color but recommends to wear in silk. Fifth, sacrificial food for ancestral rites which is carefully chosen and properly offered depending on the circumstances of life makes the ritual more earnest. Sixth, the process progresses from bongju chulchwi to chamsin, gangsin, jilchan, choheon, ahheon, jongheon, yusik, hapmun, gyemun, sasin, napju, and cheolui.
Ancestral rite is a national heirloom as well as a distinctive cultural heritage and traditional bequest, came down for a long time with priceless values of forefathers' spirit. Mission of our age is to retain and success this inherited legacy to posterity. Social functions and applied meaning in ritual make participants to retrospect the root of their first beginnings so that honor and respect for ancestors are naturally born from their esteem. This gives modern life which is in crisis at lack sense of order and materialism a new meaning of family philosophy.
Today's festival needs more profound interest and understanding on modern timeliness than obsession with the past format. Especially, in-depth research on original prototype of traditional ritual is required for modernization and popularization of ceremony with social changing.
Korean ceremonial culture of 21st century could relinquish its identity and independence only when tradition and modern are properly in harmony. Tradition is not made by, but makes to. It is desirable to re-establish great cultural heritage of the past into today's reality.
