고고학으로 본 가야의 개념과 영역 (The Concepts and Territories of Gaya in Archaeology)

초록

근래 정부의 가야사 복원정책이 발표된 이래 가야에 대한 관심이 폭발적으로 늘고 있는 가운데 문헌사료가 제한되어 있는 현실에서 고고학 자료에 대한 중요성이 더욱 커지고 있다. 그러면서 가야가 신라 보다 우수했다거나, 경주를 제외한 넓은 지역이 5세기까지 가야였다는 인식도 퍼지고 있다. 이러한 현상은 그 동안 여러 요인으로 소외되었던 가야사에 대한 보상심리도 작용한 것으로 보인다. 그러나 이 문제를 학문적으로 해결하기 위해서는 고고자료의 해석을 통해 가야사 연구의 기본문제에 접근하는 것이 필요하게 되었다. 그것은 고고학 자료가 가야의 개념과 영역, 국가발전단계 등을 논리적이고 객관적인 접근을 위한 기초이기 때문이다.
그러므로 이 논문에서는 가야고고학 자료 중 가장 많은 각 지역의 고총고분으로 대표되는 왕릉급 고분의 묘제와 출토유물(토기, 위세품)을 통해 가야의 개념을 제시하고 영역을 추론하였다. 이러한 방법으로 찾아낸 가야묘제는 목관묘, 목곽묘, 석곽묘, 석실묘로 발전하는 단계를 가야묘제로 정의하고, 토기양식 중 고배대각의 투창이 상하 일치하는 것을 가야토기양식으로 설정하였다. 따라서 각 지역의 고분 중 가야묘제를 가진 고분과 이러한 가야고분 안에서 가야토기와 가야식 위세품이 출토되는 지역을 가야의 개념과 영역으로 설정하였다.
그리고 가야묘제와 토기는 가야의 공통양식 안에서 각 지역별로 지역양식이 나타나고 있고, 이것을 통하여 가야의 영역과 특징을 알아볼 수 있었다. 그 지역양식과 영역은 금관가야영역, 아라가야영역, 소가야영역, 대가야영역으로 대별되며, 지리적으로 보면, 대체로 금호강 남쪽에서 낙동강서안에 해당된다. 특이한 점은 대가야영역이 지리산을 넘어 장수지역과 섬진강 서쪽인 순천, 광양을 포함하는 것이다. 가야고고학이 가야사복원에 더 기여하려면 계획적 발굴조사, 왕궁, 산성, 봉수 등 가야의 국가발전단계 규명을 위한 고고학 자료 확보에 힘을 기울일 필요가 있다.

영어초록

Since the government’s recent policy to restore the Gaya has been increasing, the interest in Gaya has been explosively growing. In such a situation, the importance of archaeological data is becoming more important in the reality that the documentary is limited. There is a growing awareness that Gaya is now superior to Silla, or that large areas except Gyeongju were territories of Gaya until the 5th century. This phenomenon seems to have been caused by reward psychology of Gaya, which had been neglected by various factors. However, in order to solve this problem academically, it became necessary to approach the basic problem of Gaya research through interpretation of archaeological data. The reason is that archaeological data is the basis for a logical and objective approach to the concept and area of Gaya, and the stage of national development.
In this paper, the concept of Gaya is presented and the area is deduced from the burial tombs and excavated artifacts(pottery, prestige articles) in each area of Gaya. In this way, the tombs of Gaya have been evolved into a step of Moggwanmyo(木棺墓), Moggwagmyo(木槨墓), Seoggwagmyo(石槨墓), and Seogsilmyo(石室墓). Among the earthenware styles, the upper and lower coincidence of the pitch angle of the upper diagonal was set to the Gaya earthenware style. Therefore, we have set up the concept and area of Gaya as an excavated site of burial tombs, an earthenware, and a prestige articles.
Gaya’s tombs and earthenware contain the common style of Gaya and reveal the style of each area. Through this, we were able to recognize the area and characteristics of Gaya. The local styles and areas are categorized into the Geumgwangaya area, the Aragaya area, the Sogaya area, and the Daegaya area. Geographically, it is generally located in the west of the Nakdong River in the south of Kumho River. Unusual is that the Daegaya area includes Suncheon and Gwangyang, which extend beyond Jirisan to the Jangsu area and the west of the Seomjin River. If Gaya’s archaeology is to contribute to the restoration of Gaya history, it needs to focus its efforts on securing archaeological data to investigate the national development stages of Gaya, including its planned excavation research, royal palaces, fortresses and Bongsu.
