동서양 문명 교류에서 본 ‘공감’ (Empathy in the Perspective of East-West Cultural Exchange)

초록

포스트모더니즘에서 주목받았던 인간 이성에 대한 불만족에서 사람들은 ‘공감’에 주목하고 있다. 본고에서는 이에 부응하여 공감에 대하여 그 시원에서부터 의미를 추적하여 현대에서의 공감의 가치를 올바로 확립하는 데 기여하려 한다. 특히 공감의 시원을 동양과 서양의 교류사적 측면에서 접근하여, 공감의 출발과 근원을 추적하고, 동양과 서양에서 어떠한 형태로 해석하고 어떠한 형태로 발전되어 왔는지를 파악하고자 한다. 또한 기존의 연구와 달리 공감을 동서양 문명교류의 과정, 동양에서의 발전 과정, 현대에서의 변화 과정을 통해, 공감의 의미가 공자의 사상에서 출발하여 서구를 거쳐 발전하고, 이것이 현대사회에 어떻게 중요한 요소로 주목받고 있는지를 알아보고자 하다. 이를 위해 2장에서는 동서양 교류에서 본 공감을 통해 동서양의 문명 교류와 그 속에서 유럽에 향을 주었던 정신문화를 알아보았다. 이를 통해 계몽주의 사상에 향을 준 것으로서 공자의 사상을 추적할 수 있고, 이는 공감의 시원으로서 눈여겨볼 필요가 있다고 보았다. 3장에서는 동양에서의 공감을 중심으로 공자의 공감이론이 그의 서(恕)에서 출발하고 있음을 기초로, 맹자와 소강절에 이르러 변화된 것을 알아보았고 동양에서의 공감의 온고지신(溫故知新)이 필요함을 역설하다. 마지막 4 장에서는 현대적 시각에서 본 공감을 통해 현대 사회에서의 공감의 의미와 공감의 현대적 기원 등을 알아보고, 공감이 동서를 막론한 학자들에 의해서 다양하게 연구됨을 확인하다. 앞으로 동양과 서양의 문화적 장점과 특징을 감안하여 공감의 의미를 확장하고, 서양의 상황에 편중되어 있는 공감의 가치와 의미를 동양의 상황에 맞춰 적극적으로 해석하고 개발하여야 할 것이다. 특히 동양의 발전과 서구의 동양에 대한 변화된 시각을 기초로 현대의 동양사회에서 공감의 가치를 올바로 확립하여 사용함으로서 현대 사회가 안고 있는 문제를 명확하게 접근할 수 있는 기초를 만들어야 할 것이다.

영어초록

People are paying attention to ‘empathy’ in dissatisfaction with human reason, which has been noted in postmodernism. In this paper, in response to this, we will try to contribute to properly establish the value of empathy in the present age by pursuing meaning of empathy from the beginning. Especially, by grasping the origins of empathy in the Perspective of East-West Cultural Exchange, I try to trace the origins and origins of empathy and analyze and interpret what kind of forms are developed in East and West. Especially, unlike conventional research, by examining the process of East-West civilization exchange, the process of development in the East, and the process of change in the modern world I tried to see how empathy departs from Confucius thought and is drawing attention as an important element in modern society. For this reason, in Chapter 2, we examined the spiritual culture that influenced Europe and the civilization exchanges between the East and the West through empathy as seen from the exchange. Through this, it was possible to trace Confucius’s thought as an influence on Enlightenment thought, and it was necessary to look at it as a source of sympathy. In chapter 3, based on what Confucius’ s empathic theory is from his book (恕), focusing on the empathy in the East, we have noticed a change in Mencius and Sogang-jeol and emphasized Reviewing Method of Old and New(溫故知新).In the last chapter 4, through empathy from a modern perspective, we examine the meaning of empathy in contemporary society and the contemporary origins of empathy, etc, and and confirmed that empathy has been studied variously by scholars regardless of the East and the West. In the future, based on the cultural advantages and features of the East and the West, expanding the meaning of empathy, actively interpreting the value and meaning of sympathy from biased towards the West situation to the situation of the Orient and developing it are needed. In particular, based on the development of the Orient and the changed perspective of the Orient in the West, it will be possible to establish a basis for a clear approach to the problems of modern society by properly establishing and using the values of empathy in the modern society, especially in the Asian society.
