문헌으로 본 일본 고대 등잔 (Ancient Japanese Lamp Plates from the Perspective of Written Materials)

초록

본고에서는 고대 일본에서 등불의 전반적인 양상과 그 속에서 등잔이 차지하는 위치 및 등잔을 사용하는 구체적인 상황에 대해 문헌을 통해 검토하였다.
우선, 일본 고대의 등불과 등잔에 대해 개관하고, 등잔을 이용하는 것은 고대의 등불 중에서도 일부에불과하며 실내에서 고정적인 등불로 사용하는 상황에 한정된다는 점을 확인하였다. 또한 등잔을 나타내는 용어로 ‘등잔’, ‘유배’, ‘등배’ 등을 포함하여 보다 넓은 자료를 검토할 필요가 있음을 제시하였다.
다음으로 등잔을 이용하는 상황을 궁궐·관아와 사원로 나누어 소개했다. 궁궐·관아에서는 일상생활의 등불, 仕事의 등불, 의식·연중행사의 등불로 사례를 분류하였고, 사원에서는 숙직, 연등공양, 개인헌등을 거론했다. 또한, 문자자료로 본 조명도구의 구조, 등잔의 규격과 기름·심지의 소재, 등잔과 기름·심지의 사용 비율을 검토하였다.
마지막으로 관아·사원에서 특징적인 등잔의 양상에 대해 전망하였다. 관아에서는 등잔을 사용하는상황이 많은 반면 상황별 사용수는 대체로 적지만 사원에서는 1회에 대량으로 사용(소비)하는 경우가있다는 점, 또한 등잔의 기본적인 성격을 굳이 종교적 도구인지 조명용 도구인지 양자택일로 생각할 경우 관아에서는 조명용 도구, 사원에서는 종교적 도구로 사용한다는 점을 지적하였다.

영어초록

This paper examines the overall picture of lighting in ancient Japan, the place of the lamp-dish in that picture, and the specific situations in which the lamp-dish was used, based on historical documents.
First, I overviewed ancient Japanese lights and lamp dishes, and pointed out that the use of lamp dishes was limited to indoor situations where they were used as fixed lights, and that terms such as "灯盞," "油坏," and "灯坏" were used to describe lamp dishes, but their frequency was low. I pointed out that it is necessary to examine a wider range of historical materials that include words such as "油(oil)," "灯(light)," and "夜(night) ".
Next, I introduced the situations in which lampshades are used, dividing them into palaces and government offices and temples. In the case of palaces and government offices, the examples were categorized as lights for daily life, lights for work, and lights for ceremonies and annual events. In the case of temples, I focused on the use of lights for lodgings, burning lanterns, and private offerings.
I also examined the structure of lampshades from the perspective of textual materials, the standard of lampshades and the materials of oil and lamp cores, and the ratio of lampshades to oil and lamp cores.
Lastly, I made some observations on the aspect of lantern dishes that is characteristic of government offices and temples. I pointed out that while there were many occasions when lampshades were used in government offices, the number of occasions when they were used was generally small, while in temples they were sometimes used (or consumed) in large quantities at one time. In addition, I pointed out that if we dare to choose between a religious tool and a lighting tool, the basic character of a lampshade can be seen as a lighting tool in government offices and a religious tool in temples.
