A Study on the Natural View of Seo, Yu-Gu through the Transmission of Family Tradition and the Establishment of Garden

This study analyzed the garden-related writings and articles of the Seo Yu-Gu family to illuminate the fact that Dalseong Seo family succeeded the view of nature of Seo Yu-Gu and drew the following conclusions: First, in the late Joseon Dynasty, the collecting culture led by Gyeonghwa-sejok(aristocats living in Seoul) as developed as a society centered on the Hanyang area, especially the collecting books became popular. The Dalseong Seo family's view of nature led to Seo Myeong-Eung, Seo Hyung-Soo, and Seo Yu-Gu. Through their open academic attitude, accumulation of wealth, and experience in China, the Dalseong Seo family is confirmed to have something in common that they set up their own study and continue their writing activities based on the basis of the library.
Second, Seo Myeong-Eung constructed a study called Bulsok-jae and planted bamboo trees around it to create a garden.
Jichi-heon was a simple garden with a small garden. And, Jegwangjeong-jeong is a pavilion built on top of natural terrain.
Seo Hyung-Soo enjoyed his garden life by planting various trees and creating pavilions and ponds around the site where he relocated his father's tomb. Seo Yu-Gu operated a garden called Jaiyeol-jae, and enjoyed the scenery surrounding it, and constructed Geoyeon-jeong and planted trees around it to create a garden.
Third, looking at Seo Yu-Gu’s view of nature through the transmission of Dalseong Seo family’s tradition and the establishment of garden, it is confirmed that they set up a residence in an area related to themselves or relatives and describe the garden establishment process and the surrounding landscape in detail. Seo Yu-Gu also shows great interest and affection for the garden, as the experience of the ancestors was passed on to future generations through records. As a result, the Seo Yu-Gu’s view of nature was divided into a view of nature based on Gyeokmulchiji, practical view of nature, and a view of nature with a feng shui based on filial piety.
