근대 서간(書簡)의 매체별 존재양상과 기능 (Features and Functions for Each Medium of the Modern Letters)

초록

이 글은 근대적 글쓰기의 형성과정에서 근대적 텍스트로 새로운 면모를 보이는 서간(書簡) 양식에 대한 논의이다. 특히 ‘인쇄된 서간[publishing letter]’이 단행본과 잡지에 게재되는 매체(미디어)적 특징을 논의하였다. 19세기 말부터 20세기 전반까지 근대 서간이 독본ㆍ단행본ㆍ잡지 등 인쇄매체에 정착되는 역사적 존재양상과 그 계몽적 문학적 기능을 살펴보았다. 그 결과 척독(尺牘)ㆍ독본ㆍ단행본 형태의 서간집ㆍ잡지 수록 서간은 미디어의 특성에 따라 다양한 존재양상과 기능을 수행한다는 사실을 알 수 있다. 척독은 서간의 외적 형식을 교육하는 계몽적 기능을 했지만 전래의 한문 상투어구를 답습한 국한혼용문을 유포시킨 문제점을 드러냈다. 하지만 척독과 함께 교본 역할을 한 서간집은 시대적 변화를 반영하면서 모범편지 쓰기 등 문장교본 기능뿐만 아니라 차츰차츰 명문장(名文章) 모음의 독자적 내용과 개성적 형식을 추가하게 되었다. 근대적 읽기ㆍ쓰기 교재인 ‘독본’에 수록된 서간을 보면, 초기에는 근대적 지식을 교육하는 계몽적 기능을 중시했으나, 1930년대에는 근대적 ‘교양’과 관련된 식민지 정책을 전달하거나 문학적 교양을 쌓는 데 일정한 기능을 하였다. 정기 간행물에 수록된 서간은 잡지의 미디어적 특성에 따라 서간의 수록 양상과 기능이 달랐다. 1910년대 계몽지 『소년』, 『학지광』, 『청춘』에 수록된 서간은 기행문의 전달 수단 등 근대적 지식의 계몽 기능을 하였다. 1920년대 초의 문예지 『창조』, 『폐허』, 『백조』, 『조선문단』에 수록된 서간은 서간체 수필을 거쳐 서간체 소설로의 문학적 장르 변모를 추측하게 한다. 다른 잡지에 실린 서간을 더 논의하면 근대 서간의 도구적 계몽적 상업적 기능이 다양하게 드러날 것으로 예상된다.

영어초록

This Study purposed to observe the characteristic of letter and the historical position in the formation of writing in the beginning of the 20th century. Throughout this research, the media features of the publishing letter inserted in books and magazines have been discussed. The historical features and the enlightening or literal functions of the modern letters inserted in the printed media such as readers, books and magazines from the late 19th century to the early 20th century have been discussed. As a result, it has been known that the letters inserted in the books and magazines in the forms of reading plates, readers and books have executed various features and functions according to the characteristics of the media. Even if the reading plates have executed the enlightening function of executing education with the external form of letters, they have shown the problem related to the distribution of the traditional statements with the combination of Korean and Chinese characters. However, the collection of letters, which has executed the role of textbook together with the reading plates, has reflected the periodic changes well. Also, both the function of textbook, which is related to the activity of writing a sample letter, and the original contents and characteristic forms of the famous sentences have been gradually added. By looking at the letters included in the reading plates which were used as the modern textbooks for reading and writing, it is possible to know that the enlightening function of executing education with modern knowledge was important at the beginning. However, in 1930s, the constant function of delivering the colonial policy related to the modern ‘refinement’ or accumulating the cultural ‘refinement’ was executed. The letters which were included in the periodic publications showed different features and functions according to the media characteristics of the magazines. In 1910s, the letters which were included in such enlightening magazines as Boy(소년), Hakjigwang(학지광) and Youth(청춘) executed the function of providing modern knowledge. In particular, it executed the function of delivering a travel essay. In early 1920s, the letters which were included in such literal magazines as Creation(창조), Ruin(폐허), Baekjo(백조) and Joseon Literary World(조선문단) make it possible to think about the changes related to the literal genres from the epistolary essays to epistolary novels. By discussing the letters inserted in other magazines in further details, it is expected that the tool, enlightening and commercial functions of the modern letters will be revealed in various ways.
