비주얼내러티브의 유형별 특성 사례연구 (A Case Study of Characteristics on Types of Visual Narrative)

초록

본 연구의 배경 및 목적은 다음과 같다.
미디어와 미디어 간, 플랫폼과 플랫폼 간에 경계가 사라지는 컨버전스 컬쳐(Convergence culture)의 가속화로 매체 전환에 의한 정보전달 및 콘텐츠의 공유가 일상화되는 트랜스미디어의 시대이다. 이에 디자이너들은 대중이 이해할 수 있는 형태로 정보를 전달해야 할 필요가 있으며 그 방법은 명확해져야 할 필요가 있다. 시각언어로 표현되는 비주얼내러티브는 정보들이 유기적인 인과 관계로 연결되어 있어 하나의 이해하기 쉬운 메시지로 바꾸어주며 수용자와의 상호작용을 통해 이야기를 완성시키는 특성을 가지고 있어 공간디자인 환경 속에서 더욱 중요한 의의를 갖고 있다. 공간스토리텔링에 관한 연구는 지속적으로 전개되어왔으나 이에 따른 비주얼내러티브의 특성에 관한 연구는 미비한 실정이다.
본 연구의 비주얼내러티브 유형별 특성도출을 위한 연구방법 및 내용, 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 문헌 조사를 통해 비주얼내러티브의 유형을 정적 비주얼내러티브, 동적 비주얼내러티브 그리고 상호작용적 비주얼내러티브로 분류하였다. 유형별 비주얼내러티브가 공간에 적용된 사례들을 조사하고 수용자와 상호작용하며 이야기를 전달하는지 내러티브적 특성을 알아보았다.
정적 비주얼내러티브는 이미지는 정지되어 있지만 수용자는 작품을 감상하고 이해하기 위한 외현적 행동이 발생하며 이야기 해석에 관객의 능동적인 참여가 요구된다는 점이 특징이다. 동적 비주얼내러티브는 영화나, 텔레비전, 비디오와 같은 동영상이 대표적인 예로 현실재현능력이 가장 높아 관객들에게 스펙터클한 경험을 제공할 수 있다. 반면 촬영, 편집 등을 통해 창작자의 의도가 가장 많이 반영될 수 있어 이야기해석은 수동적이라고 할 수 있다. 상호작용적 비주얼내러티브는 사용자의 수용형태를 가장 능동적으로 전환시키고 있으며 이를 통해 수용자에게 몰입을 할 수 있는 가상공간을 제공한다. 이야기의 발단, 전개, 절정, 결말 구조에 비주얼내러티브의 유형별 특성과 장점을 활용해 통합적으로 사용한다면 공간의 목적과 성격을 명확히 하며 정서적 효과가 높아짐을 알 수 있었다.
본 연구를 통해 비주얼내러티브를 유형별로 분류하고 사용자들에게 확장된 경험을 제공할 수 있는 공간 비주얼내러티브의 특성을 알아보았다. 트랜스미디어화가 진행되고 있는 지금 획일적인 내러티브가 아닌 각각의 매체별 특성에 부합되는 이야기 구조 개발 및 비주얼내러티브의 적용이 필요함을 확인할 수 있었다. 이를 통해 공간디자인의 기획 단계부터 효율적 매체 계획 및 시각화 설계를 위한 자료로 제공하고자 한다. 향후 연구에서는 다양한 이야기 구조에 적용할 수 있는 유형별 비주얼내러티브의 활용가능성의 방법에 대한 연구가 뒤따라 할 것이다.

영어초록

The backgrounds and Purpose of the study is as follows. As the borders between media and between platforms vanish, the convergence culture accelerates in this age of transmedia to the extent that the conventional forms of communication collapse whilst information forwarding and content sharing by media conversion have become part of daily routines. As information becomes complex and quantitatively increases, designers need to deliver information in such forms that the general public can understand. Therefore, the relevant methods should be clarified.
Visual narratives represented via visual language are significant in space design environment in that such narratives are characterized by the organic causality of information, which enables turning lots of information into an understandable message, and by the completion of stories via interactions with receivers. Studies on space storytelling have been carried out constantly, but there is a shortage of study on visual narrative characteristics.
The research methods of extracting visual narrative characteristics each type of, and contents and results are as follows. Based on literature review, types of visual narrative were classified into static visual narrative, dynamic visual narrative and interactive visual narrative. The cases of spatial application of each type of visual narrative and narrative characteristics regarding interaction with recipients were examined.
The static visual narrative develops stories by the medium of space, where images are stationary while receivers turn the pages to complete the stories and take physical actions to see creative works. Also, in the static visual narrative, the audience is required to actively participate in the interpretation of stories. The dynamic visual narrative refers to recording the stationary images over time exemplified by films, TV programs, videos and animations. The dynamic visual narrative best represents the reality and provides the audience with spectacular experiences. Still, the interactions of story interpretation in the dynamic visual narrative can become passive in that filming and editing allow creators to reflect their intentions more than in any other type of narratives. The interactive visual narrative converts the reception of users most actively, and thus provides the settings which they can become committed to. It was found that an integrated application of characteristics and strengths of each type of visual narrative to the beginning, development, climax and end of a story clarified the purpose and properties of space and increased emotional effects.
Given the ongoing trend of transmedia, it is necessary to develop and apply visual narratives that match the nature of each medium in lieu of a uniform narrative. The present study classifies the types of visual narratives and highlights the characteristic of visual narratives that give receivers extended experiences. The present findings may be used as reference data for designing the medium-specific features and visualization for efficient storytelling from the early planning stage of space graphics. In addition, further research will need to study methods of applying each type of visual narrative to a variety of story structures.
