묵가의 辯說에 반영된 聖王과 詩書 (Holy King and ShiShu reflected in the Discourses of the Mohist School)

초록

본문에서는 백가쟁명의 과정에서 묵가의 변설에 반영된 고대의 성왕과 시서의 개괄적 특징을 살펴보았다. 묵가는 당시 백가쟁명의 상황에서 “실천을 전제로 하는” 변설을 적극적으로 긍정하였다. 이를 위해 먼저 그 목적과 표준을 명확히 설정하고, 이른바 “십론”을 선양하기 위해 상제와 귀신을 설정하고 고대 성왕의 사례와 아울러 시서의 내용을 활용하였다.
묵가의 이념 선양을 위한 변설의 특징을 개괄하면 무엇보다 집단의 실제 경험과 공리를 중시하는 것이다. 이것은 하층민을 기반으로 하는 묵가 집단의 특성상 당연한 일이며 이를 통하여 전국시대 이른바 “顯學”의 하나로서 민중의 적극적인 지지를 받을 수 있었다. 그러나 묵가 변설은 다른 한편으로 일정한 한계를 지닐 수밖에 없었다. 특히 대중의 일반적 신념에 동조하는 태도는 운명론을 배척하는 입장과 모순되는 것처럼 보인다. 묵가에서 활용한 고대 聖王의 사례는 물론 십론의 정당성과 권위를 확보하기 위한 것이다. 그런데 선진 유가에서 흔히 정치 윤리적 측면 특히 禮樂과 관련하여 성왕의 사례를 활용한 것과는 상당한 차이를 보인다. 묵가도 비록 고대 성왕의 상제와 귀신에 대한 의례의식은 긍정하지만 유가의 예악에 대해서는 철저히 비판하였다.
『묵자』에 인용된 시서의 자료 가운데 다수의 逸詩와 逸書가 포함되고, 일부 문자 및 그 배열이 기타 제자서와 차이가 나는 점을 확인할 수 있다. 이것은 당시 다양한 시서의 판본이 존재하였음을 시사한다. 따라서 묵자는 일정한 기준에 근거하여 시서를 원용하면서 본래의 취지를 그대로 살리기도 하고 일부 자료를 가공할 수도 있었을 것이다. 묵자가 시서를 원용하는 태도에서 대표적인 특징은 거기에 반영된 모든 내용을 역사적 사실로 간주한다는 것이다. 반면에 유가는 일관되게 시를 교화의 자료로 활용하고 있다.

영어초록

In this text, we looked at the general characteristics of ancient Holy King(聖王) and ShiShu(詩書) reflected in the Mohist School's argument in the process of Hundred School's Dispute. The Mohist School positively affirmed the argument that “presupposes practice” in the context of the Hundred School's Dispute at the time. For this, he first clearly set the purpose and standard, set God and ghosts to promote the so-called “Ten Discourses”(十論), and utilized the case of Holy King as well as the contents of ShiShu.
If we outline the characteristics of the argument for the promotion of the ideology of the Mohist School, it emphasizes the actual experience and utility of the group above all else. This is natural due to the nature of the based on the lower classes, and through this, it was able to receive active support from the people as one of the so-called “Famous schools”(顯學) during the Warring States period. However, on the other hand, the Mohist School's argument had to have certain limitations. Especially the attitude of sympathizing with the general beliefs of the public seems to contradict the position that rejects fatalism. The case of Holy King used in the Mohist School is, of course, to secure the legitimacy and authority of Ten Discourses. However, it is quite different from the case of Holy King, which is often used in advanced Confucianism in terms of political and ethical aspects, especially in relation to the rites and music. Although Mohist School also affirmed the rituals of the ancient God and ghosts, he thoroughly criticized the rites and music of Confucianism.
It can be seen that a number of scattered poetry(逸詩) and scattered books(逸書) are included among the materials of ShiShu quoted in 'Mozi', and some characters and their arrangement are different from other disciple books. This suggests that various versions of ShiShu existed at that time. Therefore, Mozi was able to retain the original purpose as it is, or to process some data while citing Shiseo according to certain standards. A typical characteristic of Mozi's attitude of citing ShiShu is that he regards all the contents reflected therein as historical facts. On the other hand, Confucianism consistently uses poetry as a source of edification. In short, the Hundred School selected and utilized the cases and poems of the ancient Holy King to rationalize and promote their political and ethical ideology in common in the process of arguing for the Hundred School's Dispute.
