佛傳圖와 變文 : 中國 山西 巖山寺 金代 佛傳壁畵를 중심으로 (Illustration of the Life of Buddha and Transformation Texts : Jin Dynasty Illustrations of the Buddha's Life at Yanshansi, Shanxi Province, China)

초록

본 논문은 巖山寺의 文殊殿 서벽에 그려진 佛傳壁畵의 도상학적 배경에 관한 연구이다. 이 작품에 관해 주목되는 선행 연구는 중국학자 孟嗣徽의 연구로 그녀는, 암산사 불전벽화의 2장면이唐代와 五代 유행한 중국화된 佛傳文學인 變文임을 지적했다.
본고는 선행 연구를 바탕으로 석가모니 부처의 생애를 소재로 한 변문들을 암산사 불전벽화의도상들과 비교 분석했다. 그 결과 암산사 불전벽화에 남아있는 45장면 중 삼분의 일에 해당하는16장면이 변문의 내용임을 확인했다. 따라서 암산사 불전벽화는 佛傳圖 연구에 있어 석가모니 부처의 생애를 기록한 다양한 텍스트와의 상관성에 관한 연구의 필요성을 상기시켰다는 점에서 매우 큰 의미가 있는 작품이다.
한편 본 논문은 12세기 후반에 제작된 암산사 불전벽화에 宋初에 모두 사라져버린 변문이 도해될 수 있었던 원인을 다음과 같이 추론했다.
먼저 변문은 唐代에 모든 계층에게 인기가 높았던 俗講으로 인해 그 내용이 후대와 다른 나라로까지 전해질 수 있었다고 추정된다. 그리고 변문은, 유행 시대부터 그 내용이 불전도에 그려졌고, 이 도상들은 明·淸代 불전도로까지 계승되었다. 따라서 암산사 불전벽화에 변문의 내용이 풍부하게 그려질 수 있었던 원인은 변문 전파력과 도상의 계승에 있었다고 판단했다.
본고를 통해 이후 불전도 연구에 있어 불전도와 텍스트의 다양성에 관한 연구가 좀 더 활발히 진행되기를 기대한다.

영어초록

This study examines the iconographical sources for the illustrations of the Buddha's life drawn on the west wall of the Wenshudian at Yanshansi(Yanshan Temple). The most notable academic achievement on this work was made by the Chinese scholar, Meng Sihui, who argued that two scenes among the cycle were taken from transformation texts, a form of Buddhist literature developed in China that were widespread during the Tang Dynasty and Five Dynasties periods.
Based on previous studies, this paper compares the transformation texts on the life of the Buddha with the mural paintings at Yanshansi, and identifies the literary sources for sixteen out of forty-five scenes―over a third of the entire cycle. Thus, the Yanshansi illustrations gain significance as a series of work that necessitate further attention to various texts that narrate the life of Shakyamuni Buddha in the study of the illustrations of the life of the Buddha.
Furthermore, possible ways are proposed, in which the Yanshansi illustrations can incorporate the contents of the transformation texts that have mostly disappeared by the Song Dynasty period. It is likely that the texts were handed down and dispersed to other countries by the means of popular public lectures attended by all classes during the Tang Dynasty. The texts on the life of the Buddha were made into illustrations at the time when they were widely known and the iconographies were continued by later artists until the Ming and Qing periods. In short, the illustrations on the life of the Buddha at Yanshansi were able to depict contents taken from the transformation texts because the original texts enjoyed broad popularity and the iconographies were retained through the ages.
To conclude, I hope that this paper will contribute to more lively discussions on the illustrations of the Buddha's life and the diversity of related texts in the future.
