포즈로서의 문학과 현실로서의 문학－『7번국도』의 개작을 중심으로 (Literature as Pose and Literature as Reality －With the focus on the rewriting of the 『National Highway No.7』)

초록

김연수는 장편소설 『7번국도』(1997)를 발표한 지 13년이 지난 뒤에 그것을 『7번국도 Revisited』(2010)라는 제목으로 다시 써서 출간한다. 시간의 차이에도 불구하고 두 작품의 기본 구조는 동일하다. 작가는 이야기의 뼈대(구조)만 유지한 채 나머지를 새롭게 다시 쓴 작품이라고 말하는데, 그 이유는 “소설관이 바뀌었기 때문” 이라고 한다. 김연수는 작품을 처음 내면서는 문학을 하나의 ‘포즈(pose)’로 인식했지만, 이후 문학은 ‘현실’이라는 생각을 하면서 작품을 다시 보게 되었다고 한다.
원작 『7번국도』가 시간의 교차 편집이 매우 복잡하고 중층적으로 이루어져 사건의 인과 관계가 잘 드러나지 않고 발생하는 사건들도 단편적인 이미지로 제시되었다면, 『7번국도 Revisited』에서는 에피소드들이 서로 연결되고 사건 역시 일관성을 갖고 전개된다. 그로 인해 원작과 개작본의 구성은 크게 변해서 나타난다. 가령, 주제의식을 단적으로 보여주었던 ‘작가의 말’이 원작에서는 서두에 제시되어 작품의 의미를 만들어 내는데 기여했으나 개작본에서는 모두 삭제된다. ‘작가의 말’로시작하고 ‘덧붙이는 말’로 끝나는 원작과 달리 개작본은 화자와 ‘세희’의 이야기로작품이 시작되면서 ‘나’와 ‘세희’, ‘재현’과의 관계가 중요하게 언급된다. 개작본의 제목에 ‘revisited’라는 말을 붙인 것은 작가가 7번 국도를 다시 방문하여 첫 번째 방문 경험을 회고하듯이 서술한 까닭이다. 첫 방문과 다음 방문에서 느낀 감정을 비교하며 첫 방문에서의 감정을 돌아보고 정리한 것이 개작본이고, 그것이 곧 『7번국도』와 『7번국도 Revisited』의 관계이다. 이런 개작에 의해서 작품의 주제는 한층 강화된다. “추억의 아득한 시간을 가로지르며 상실과 희망, 폐허와 구축 사이를 왕복”하는 삶의 허무함이 모호하고 추상적인 형태로 드러났다면, 개작본에서는 청춘의 시간을 읽고 잊고 싶은 것과 기억하고자 하는 것을 생각하고, 그럼에도 살아가야 할 시간을 바라봐야 한다는, 보다 선명한 주제로 변화되어 있다. 여기에는 물론 시대 현실에 대한 인식의 변화도 작용한다. 김연수는 한국문학에서 제대로 된연애소설이 드문 이유로 ‘육체적 훼손을 전시하며 각인시키는’ 반공주의 체제를 언급한다. 김연수가 소설에서 연애담을 빈번하게 활용하지만 인물들의 연애가 실패로 귀결되는 이유는 이런 사실과 무관하지 않을 것이다.

영어초록

Kim Yeon-soo rewrites and publishes the novel National Highway No.7 Revisited (2010) 13 years after the publication of the novel  National Highway No.7(1997). Despite the time difference, the basic structure of the two works is the same. The author calls it “a completely new work, written from scratch with only the bones of the story intact”, because “the perspective of the novel” has changed. Kim says that when he first published his work, he perceived literature as a kind of ‘pose’, but later he looked at the work again and thought, “Literature is real”.
Whereas the original National Highway No.7 had a very complex and layered cross-editing of time, where the causality of events was not clear and the events that occurred were presented in fragmented images,  National Highway No.7 Revisited has a coherent narrative where the episodes are connected and the events are described. As a result, the organization of the original and the adaptation is significantly different.
For example, the “author's words”, which clearly demonstrated the sense of theme, were presented at the beginning of the original work and contributed to the creation of the meaning of the work. However, in the adapted works, these words have been excised. Unlike the original, which begins with “author's words” and ends with “additional words”, the adaptation begins with the story of narrator and ‘Se-hee’, emphasizing the relationship between ‘I’, ‘Se-hee’, and ‘Jae-Hyun’. The word ‘revisited’ is added to the title of the adaptation because the author revisited Highway No. 7 and wrote it as a retrospective of his first visit. The revised version is the one that compares the feelings of the first and second visits and summarizes the feelings of the first visit, and that is the relationship between the National Highway No.7 and National Highway No.7 Revisited. This adaptation further strengthens the theme of the work. While the futility of life, “traversing the dimness of memory, oscillating between loss and hope, ruin and construction” was presented in a vague and abstract form, the adaptation has transformed into a clearer theme: the need to read through the years of one's youth, to think about what one wants to remember and what one wants to forget, and to look forward to the time one still has to live. It is evident that a revised perception of the prevailing circumstances also contributes to this shift in perspective. Kim Yeon-soo attributes the rarity of romance novels in Korean literature to the anti-communist system of “displaying and imprinting physical deformities”. This may explain why Kim's novels often feature romantic elements, yet the relationships between her characters are frequently destined to fail.
