The Effects of School Gardening Programs as Social Capital to Middle School Students’ Emotional Safety

초록

This study focused on the relationship of gardening activities and emotional stability with social capital to support middle school students’ quality of life in communities without school bullying. Data were collected by survey from students at four schools in three areas based on gardening activities and the relevance of school bullying. The sample comprised 192 cases and the data were analyzed with SPSS/Win 21.0. Emotional stability and social capital were measured by 14 items adopted from previous studies. The Cronbach's alpha of .86 was an acceptable reliability. The results found that emotional stability with social capital by area was higher for students in Seoul (which has active gardening) than for students in other areas. The major factors were: neighbors who pay attention to students, a school gardening program, accessibility of a local garden, motivation to participate in gardening, expectations of a gardening program, experience of school bullying, management of difficulties, current anguish or trouble, occupations of parents or guardian, amount of communication between parents and school concerns, volunteer activities, and so on. In conclusion, factors regarding gardening programs and social capital were important to middle school students’ emotional stability. The results could be useful for understanding middle school students’ lives and developing supportive community gardening programs for students.
