온라인 영 소설 읽기 수업에서 토론방의 시행과 학업성취도와의 상관관계 (Implementations of a discussion room in an online English novel reading class and its correlation with academic achievements)

초록

본 연구는 온라인 수업에서 영 소설 읽기 후 토론방을 개설하여 학습자들의 토론을 진행하고, 그 양상을 살펴보며 학업성취도와의 상관관계를 알아보는 데에 목적이 있다. 이를 위하여 본 연구에서는 서울 소재 한 사이버대학교 영어학과의 영어소설읽기 수업에서 학습자들의 토론을 위한 토론방을 개설하였다. 46명의 학습자들은 문학작품을 읽은 후에 그 내용에 대하여 각자의 생각을 올리고 서로 상호작용하도록 하였다. 이는 학습자들이 글의 의미를 이해하는 것은 물론 읽은 것을 토대로 새로운 것을 생각해 낼 수 있고 자신의 문제 해결에 관련시켜 읽을 수 있는 창작 단계에 속한 것이다. 학습자들은 총 2회의 토론내용에 대하여 다각적인 방향으로 토론 및 상호작용을 나타내었다. 또한 학업성취도와도 토론방 참여도는 유의미한 상관관계를 나타내었다. 이와 같은 결과들을 살펴볼 때, 온라인 영어 수업에서 토론방은 학습자들의 상호작용 및 창조적 생각을 고양시키고, 영 소설에 대한 이해와 학업성취를 높일 수 있는 수업방안으로 보인다. 향후 이에 대한 더욱 다양한 연구들이 기대된다.

영어초록

This study investigates some strategies for accomplishing an integrated language teaching designed to improve both students' understanding and their capacity for expression in an English reading course through online education. An English novel is chosen as the text material and learner oriented education proceeds. To design an online discussion, five strategies for understanding some degrees of learners' reading comprehension are reviewed. Among them, the fourth stage (Evaluative/Critical level) and the fifth stage(Creative/Appreciative level) are focused on selecting the topics of discussions. Next, learners are encouraged to discuss actively through online. Thirdly, aspects of learners' discussions are analyzed in five scales in terms of the extent of arguments for and against. Finally, correlation analysis is carried out to investigate how students' participation in online discussions affects their academic achievements. Our findings are as follows: first, as the participants are adult learners, discussion topics are comprised of high level questions, and some of their answers are connected to their own real-life situations. Second, each student seriously expresses his or her own thoughts such as the role of man and woman, the relationship of force in a male-dominated society, an image of working class women, their children's education, the need for corporal punishment, and some differences in time and space. They actively exchange their opinions by adding their comments. Finally, the amounts of participants in discussion shows significant correlation with the evaluation result of their academic achievements including quizzes, mid-term and final exams.
