하숙방과 행랑방 ― 근대적 주체와 사회적 감수성의 위치에 대한 일 고찰 (Lodgings and Servants’ quarters ― A study on the location of modern subject and social sensibility)

초록

하숙방은 중요한 근대문학적 의의를 지닌다. 하숙방은 교환가치를 향한 도약이 이루어진 공간으로서 여러 가지 의미의 교통을 함축한다. 하숙방은 주체를 토지와 가문의 결박에서 벗어나게 하는 사회적 위치다. 더 나아가 하숙방은 그 소외된 관계를 청년이라는 정서적이고 이념적인 장을 통해 정당화하고 활성화하는 근대적인 내면과 감수성의 동적인 기원이다.
한편 ‘행랑것’은 행랑방에 ‘거저’ 들어가 집주인에 소속됨으로써 탄생한다. 그는 계약을 통해 방을 임대하거나 임노동을 수행하지 않는다. 이는 「재운」의 핵심적 에피소드인 터주 문제와도 관련된다. 터주는 신화 및 제의의 요소가 소거되고 교환가치로 도약한 근대적 공간과는 무관하다. ‘행랑것’과 마찬가지로 터주는 공짜로 남의 집에 사는 존재다. 그러나 계약이나 측량은 터주와 집터의 관계를 근본적으로 해소한다. 그 점에서 터주 모시기는 행랑방의 사회학과 잘 어울린다. 이는 이성적 근대 주체에 미달하는 자의 행위로서 집주인이 수행하는 인격적 지배와 짝을 이루며 ‘행랑것’의 존재론을 완성한다.
그러나 행랑살이는 신분적 결박을 해체하는 사회의 총체적 재편 과정에서 발생한 것이라는 점에서 결국 소멸될 운명에 놓여 있다. 그 점에서 행랑방은 하숙방과 마찬가지로 근대적 ‘교통’과 동원의 초기적인 양상을 구현하며 근대 체계와 근대인이 형성되는 일상의 장면을 연출했다. 다시 말해 하숙방과 행랑방은 역사적 의의로 충만한 근대 사회와 근대 문학의 무대였다. 그리고 이상의 문학은 이러한 하숙방과 행랑방의 존재론을 아이러니컬하게 종합하는 역사적인 유머에 도달했다.

영어초록

Lodgings described in many modern literary works have important meanings. As a space(place) which has accomplished the leap to an exchange value, a lodging implies various transportations. It is the social location that enables subjects to be free from the land and their clans. And it is also the dynamic origin of the modern interiority and sensibility which justifies and activates the estranged social relations through the emotional and ideological fields of the youth.
Meanwhile, servants(행랑것) are born by borrowing their servants’ quarters(행랑방) free and belonging to their landlords. They don’t rent their rooms with contracts nor work for wages. This is related to the episode of the spirit of a house site(터주) which is depicted in ‘Luck of Property’(재운). The spirit of a house site has no position in modern space that has eliminated the mythical and ritual elements and has taken the leap to an exchange value. The spirit of a house site lives in landlord’s house free as like the servants do. But contracting and measuring fundamentally dissolve the relationship between the spirit of a house site and the house itself. In this sense, serving the spirit of a house site is well matched to the sociology of the servants’ quarter. With the landlord’s personal domination over him, it accomplishes the ontology of servant who is short to be a rational modern subject.
But servants’ quaters of modern age are destined to disappear because they has appeared in the total reorganizing process of society that comes to dissolve the status binding. In that sense, with producing the scenes of everyday life in which modern systems and modern subjects were forming, servants’ quaters showed the early modern transportation and mobilization as like lodgings did. In short, lodgings and servants’ quaters are the stages of modern society and literature which are full of historical significance. And Yi Sang’s literary works attained the historical humor that synthesized the ontologies of lodgings and servants’ quaters ironically.
